DOOM Classic is a sci-fi first-person shooter game developed by id Software and Nerve Software and published by Bethesda Softworks. It is an updated version of the original 1993 Doom that uses the Unity engine as a shell for the id Tech 1 engine.[2]

This game, as well as DOOM II Classic, was initially released in a suite of ports for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, iOS, and Android, however, the ports were initially heavily criticized due to its poor quality and inaccuracies compared to the previous console generation ports while implementing an always-online DRM that required the player to sign into a account (meant to unlock Slayers Club rewards) to even play the game, despite these ports not having any online multiplayer features.[3] After the initial criticism of the ports, Nerve Software eventually rectified the issues of the intrusive log-in requirements and problems with the ports through patches.[4] A PC version of DOOM Classic was released through on January 9, 2020, which was later released through Steam on September 3, 2020 as a free update to existing owners of The Ultimate Doom.

Nerve Software, with assistance from members of the Doom modding community, would later go onto improve the ports even further by introducing new features, such as official 60+ FPS gameplay, 16:9 widescreen presentation, and free downloadable add-ons with custom vanilla-compatible and DeHackEd WAD support for the mobile and PC versions, among other changes.[5][6]

Doom Widescreen Modding Assets[edit]

A collection of widescreen-friendly art assets drawn by Stephen "Scuba Steve" Browning (originally created from an unrelated widescreen project by Nash Muhandes) featured in the 2019 Unity re-release has been made available for personal use with compatible source ports.[14] The widescreen assets for Doom, Doom II, and Final Doom can be downloaded here. For the other Doom-related expansions not covered in the official download, see this Google Drive folder hosted by Stephen Browning.[15]

Restoring altered content in Doom Classic's IWAD[edit]

The red cross symbols on recovery items were altered and the secret Nine Inch Nails logo found in E4M1 was removed to avoid trademark infringement in the IWAD used for Doom Classic.[16]
Requires the original MS-DOS DOOM.WAD file. Make a back up of Doom Classic's doom.wad file before using these modifications.
Replace Doom Classic's IWAD with the original MS-DOS version's IWAD[17]
  1. Copy The Ultimate Doom's MS-DOS DOOM.WAD file found in <path-to-game>. See the 1993 version's article for common installation locations.
  2. Browse to your Doom Classic installation folder and go to <path-to-game>\DOOM_Data\StreamingAssets, then paste the original DOOM.WAD into this folder, replacing the stock doom.wad file used by Doom Classic.


Reverts the new widescreen assets to the original 4:3 assets.
Only applies to The Ultimate Doom in Doom Classic; the downloadable Final Doom and BTSX add-on WADs will not be affected.
Restore the changes via SLADE[18]

A Steam Guide written by AmethystViper provides instructions on how to restore the altered contents of Doom Classic's IWAD among other tweaks through the use of the SLADE editor tool. The guide can be viewed here.

    "I’m on PC. Can I drop my own WAD files on the client to run them?
    Actually...yes! Browse to your installation directory and put any WAD files into your Saved Games\id Software\DOOM Classic\WADs folder (or the equivalent folder for DOOM II) and they will be recognized in the Add-ons menu. Note that only WADs compatible with so-called vanilla-DOOM and DOOM II will function at this time.

    Basically the first connected XInput controller is always connected and used by "player one", aka the one with the keyboard and mouse. There does not seem to be a way to disable this and allow the XInput controller to be used by "player two", so at least two XInput controllers are required, or a controller of another type (e.g. DualShock 4).
