This page may require
cleanup to meet basic
quality standards. The specific problem is:
(Mrntptrs:) Unclear which fixes and mods work on the latest Complete Edition version (1.2.0.59) and which requires downgrading. Maybe too many mods are listed; should maybe only list the best mods). You can help by
modifying

- Rockstar Social Club is no longer needed to run the game since Patch 6 .[5]
- The Complete Edition includes Grand Theft Auto: Episodes from Liberty City.
- The March 2020 update to the Steam version upgraded the game to the Complete Edition, adding achievements, introducing Rockstar Games Launcher DRM and removing multiplayer[6], SecuROM PA DRM and Games for Windows - LIVE DRM entirely (see Network for solutions).
- CD keys can be redeemed on the Rockstar Games Launcher to activate the Complete Edition.[7]
DLC and expansion packs
- The Complete Edition includes the DLCs now. All previously bought copies on Steam were freely upgraded to that version, and original retail versions can be freely upgraded to the Complete Edition by registering a Games for Windows - LIVE key on Rockstar Games Launcher.

Essential improvements
Patches
- The latest Steam/Rockstar Games Launcher version is incompatible with most modifiactions so a downgrade to patch 1.0.4.0, 1.0.7.0 or 1.0.8.0 is strongly recommended.
- Patch 1.0.4.0 is recommended for ENB visual mods, 1.0.7.0 for overall mod compatibility and patch 1.0.8.0 haves the most stable performance but there's a rare issue/bug which makes patch 1.0.8.0 run way worse compared to other patches.
- Patch 1.0.7.0 and 1.0.8.0 restores multiplayer which is still available to play. Patch 1.0.4.0 also supports multiplayer with this mod but you won't be able to play with patch 1.0.7.0 and 1.0.8.0 users.
- Patch 1.0.4.0 doesn't have EFLC support so you can only play the original game but not the DLC's.
- Patches after Patch 1.0.8.0 were released only for the game's digital versions. Although the first numbered upgrade was referred as "1.20", subsequent versions of the game adopted a "1.2.x.x" model.
Downgrade Tool
- Use ItsClonkAndre's downgrade tool to downgrade your GTA IV copy easily with a few clicks.
- Also comes with a radio downgrader and essential mods with multiple options.
- Very easy to use.

Issues fixed
Timing-related issues
- An unlocked or incorrect frame rate cap (+60FPS) can result in timing issues.
Related issues
- Mouse movement is very difficult while using a browser computer.
- In the mission "Out of Commission", while trying to climb onto the helicopter, no matter how often you press repeatedly the jump key, you will not be able to get onto the helicopter.
- Brucie's garage door in the mission "Easy as Can Be" closes prematurely leaving Niko trapped.
- The use of the virtual keyboard of the police car computer becomes impossible to control with the keyboard due to the sensitivity being increased too much
- In the mission "A Revenger's Tragedy", while chasing the helicopter on your boat, the Jacob's helicopter crashes and you are not be able to achieve.
- The weapons of the enemies are floating in the air (+200fps)
- While playing pool, the balls physics breaks, balls don't go as far and as fast as they do.
- The elevating work platform rises faster than normal
- Too slow handbrake camera and regular camera movement and too zoomed-in cutscenes
Enable Vsync in the options game and set refresh rate on 60hz
|
Install Out of Commmission Helicopter Bug Fix[1], which uses the scripts.img from patch 8.
|
For Regular camera movement and handbrake camera are too slow and Cutscenes are too zoomed in Use FusionFix (keyboard and mouse controls only)[21][22]
|
Game language does not follow the Rockstar Games Launcher/Steam settings
No bullet spread/recoil
- Bullet spread/recoil is enabled only when playing with a controller by default, resulting in 100% shooting accuracy when using a keyboard and a mouse.[citation needed]
Stuttering, texture popping and other performance issues after running the game for a while
- Forcing available memory on Version 1.0.8.0 is not recommended; it will make the game unstable.[citation needed]
Force maximum available memory[26]
|
- Create a file named
commandline.txt in the game's root folder.
- Enter one of the following codes in to the newly created file depending on the texture quality set:
- Low textures (256 MB VRAM):
-memrestrict 230686720
- Medium textures (512 MB VRAM):
-memrestrict 314572800
- High textures (1 GB+ VRAM):
-memrestrict 681574400
- Save the file and run the game.
|
Unable to play in offline mode with the game's Steam version
- This solution will enable offline mode with local game saves.
Run the game from the Rockstar Games Launcher[27]
|
- Ensure both Rockstar Games Launcher and Steam are already set for offline mode: Rockstar Games Launcher's how-to. Steam's how-to.
- Disconnect the system from Ethernet and Wi-Fi.
- Run the Rockstar Games Launcher using Windows' Start Menu, that uses a shortcut to
LauncherPatcher.exe (usually located in "%PROGRAMFILES%\Rockstar Games\Launcher").
- Run the game from this launcher by clicking "Play on Steam".
|
VRAM amount is wrongly detected
- The game can wrongly detect the amount of VRAM available, showing only 512 MB instead.
- Claimed to be fixed on Patch 8,[28] but may still happen on certain system configurations[29] such as laptops with dual GPU configurations[30], when using wrappers like DXVK or when Downgrading to a pre-Patch 8 game version.
Use -availablevidmem XXXX.0 command line argument and replace XXXX by the wanted amount of VRAM in MB[31]
|
Notes
- Using any value above
3072.0 on latest Complete Edition Version seems to cause texture popping all throughout the map. Therefore, it's not recommended to use 4096.0 even if your video card allows it.[32]
|
Use ExtendVidMem[33]
|
- Works on the Complete Edition.
- Download the
dinput8.dll file in this page.
- Extract it to
<path-to-game>\GTA IV\ .
Notes
- Rename the ASI loader's variant of the
dinput8.dll file to dsound.dll to use this fix along with Ultimate ASI Loader.
|

Custom music
The game allows users to play their own music on a custom radio station: Independence FM.[35]
- Simply place any audio files/folders or create shortcuts in the
%USERPROFILE%\Documents\Rockstar Games\GTA IV\User Music\
folder and tune into the station in-game.
- iTunes must be installed for M4A support.
- Supported formats are M4A, MP3 and WMA. Other formats and extensions are not detected.
- Use shortcuts to audio files/folders to improve performance and save disk space.
- Supports high-resolution audio files. Up to 96 kHz/24 bit.
- Supports Surround audio files. Up to 6 channels.
- FLAC is not supported. Convert them to WMA Lossless to use them in-game.
- Monaural audio files are not supported.
Downgrading
- Some mods may not work on the game's latest version (1.2.0.59). Consequently, the most recommended versions for modding are 1.0.4.0 up to 1.0.7.0,
{{Fixbox|description=Steam guide for downgrading the Complete Edition to versions 1.0.4.0, 1.0.7.0, or 1.0.8.|fix=
Notes
- Delete any plugins, like FusionFix, from the game folder before using this method.
- Can keep DLCs in one game, Steam achievements and the 3 EFLC-exclusive radio stations if you donwgrade to patch 1.0.7.0 or 1.0.8.0.
- Works with GFWL (delete xlive.dll from the game folder and XlivelessAddon.asi from the plugins folder and get the GFWL code protection disabler to enable GFWL) and multiplayer clients.
- Has a beginner-friendly installer with a guide.
- It is alternatively possible to play Singleplayer without any requirements for GFWL thanks to xlive.dll.
- Downgrading to patch 1.0.4.0 removes DLC support.
Notes
- An older Script Hook version is needed for modding on Version 1.0.4.0, found here.
- Patch 1.0.7.0 and 1.0.8.0 haves better shadows, DLC support, many bug fixes, secondary key-bindings and more.
- Patch 1.0.7.0 is overall the most mod friendly patch.
- Some older mods only work on Version 1.0.4.0, while other mods, like ColAccel, only work on patch 1.0.7.0 and 1.0.8.0
- Patch 1.0.4.0 is recommended in case you want to use ENB visual mods.
Reduce loading times
Place ColAccel script in <path-to-game> [36]
|
- Requires an ASI Loader.
- Supports the Complete Edition.
- Greatly reduces loading times.
- May cause bugs and/or other inconsistencies, mostly related to scripted models or objects that alter their appearance via story progression.[37]
|
Restore removed music
- Over 50 radio station tracks were removed from the game in April 2018 due to expired licenses.[38]
Downgrading the Radio Stations[39]
|
- Download the (music) downgrader.
- Unpack to the installation folder.
- Run
install.bat .
|
- Ultimate ASI Loader is a tool that loads custom libraries with the
ASI
file extension.
- Needed by FusionFix and ZolikaPatch.
Use over 2 GB of RAM
- The game will only use up to 2 GB of RAM by default; this can be adjusted to up to 4 GB. Extending this limit may be needed while using wrappers, like DXVK.
Edit stream.ini[41]
|
- Go to
<path-to-game>\GTA IV\pc\ and open the stream.ini file.
- Alter every occurrence of
204800 to 409600 and save the file.
|
XLiveLessAddon
- Disables Games for Windows - LIVE.
- Includes Ultimate ASI Loader.
- The location of the savegames alters to
%USERPROFILE%\Documents\Rockstar Games\GTA IV\savegames\
.
- Adds borderless windowed mode.
- Allows running the game directly from
GTAIV.exe
.
- Gives an option to skip intro videos and the main menu.
- Disables LIVE multiplayer acess. LAN multiplayer is still accessible, but connecting to a LAN lobby crashes the game.[citation needed]
- DXVK is a Vulkan-based translation layer for Direct3D 9-11 games.
- May vastly improve the game's performance due to its added shader/state cache systems, advanced multithreading support and extended draw call handling capabilities.
- May prevent some ENB shaders, like ambient occlusion, from caching and rendering.[43]
Install DXVK[44]
|
Notes
- Create a text file, add
d3d9.maxFrameLatency = 1 to it and save it as dxvk.conf in <path-to-game>\GTAIV\ to avoid or reduce occasional frame skipping and stuttering; this command ensures only a single frame is buffered by the CPU ahead of time.[45]
- Adding
d3d9.presentInterval = 1 to the dxvk.conf file enables Vsync; using Vsync via DXVK may give less CPU overhead compared to the game's own Vsync implementation.
- Adding
d3d9.numBackBuffers = 3 to the dxvk.conf file may further improve frametime stability while using Vsync; this command ensures Triple Buffering is active.
- The game may wrongly detect the amount of VRAM available and only show 512 MB instead while using DXVK.
- The game may need to use over 2 GB of RAM to avoid stuttering while using DXVK.
|
Modifications
- It is strongly recommended to backup any files these mods may replace.
- Should not be used in multiplayer.
- Script Hook and CE Hook is a prerequisite for some mods.
- Aims to fix some issues on the Complete Edition (version 1.2.0.30 or later), including emissive shaders which don't behave as they do on consoles.[1][2]
- Only compatible with older versions 1.0.4.0, 1.0.7.0, or 1.0.8.0.
- Requires Ultimate ASI Loader.
- Started as a bug fixing mod and added some graphical overhauls.
- Fixes issues that FusionFix does not address.
- Requires downgrading to an older version of the game..[47]
- Unneeded on the Complete Edition.
- For older versions from 1.0.6.0 to 1.0.8.0.
- Merges the radio stations and songs from EFLC into the base game.
- Removes RamJam FM, Self-Actualization FM and Vice City FM radio stations.
- Aims to accurately remake every texture of the HUD in higher resolution.
- Makes the phone model better match the Whiz Phone's cutscene model.
- Adds more details and information on the world map and improves its look.
- Improves the game's saturation and removes the gray-green filter.
- Makes the game less dark/grey, more natural and more vibrant.
- No Performance drop so perfect for low end hardware.
- Compatible with every patch/version of GTA IV.
- Allows larger draw distances.
- Not compatible with most visual mods because it replaces timecycle files.
- For versions 1.0.7.0 and 1.0.8.0.
- Should be installed before FusionFix.
- Fixes some minor graphical issues and replaces the low quality textures in EFLC by better quality ones.
- Popular modification amongst mod creator, YouTuber and other content creators.
- ENB Series graphical enhancement was never meant to work on Version 1.0.5.0 or later[49], and the particular ENB version must support Version 1.0.8.0 (so also dax.dll fix included) (IV | EFLC), otherwise the game may display a black screen. This instruction is additionally needed to fix the Social Club error on the Rockstar Games Launcher / Steam version.
- One of the very few working ENB modifications with the Rockstar Games Launcher version (and also 1.0.8.0) is Excellent ENB and its versions from at least v3 (with Social Club error fix above) and later.
- Above link only supports patch 1.0.7.0 and 1.0.8.0 but patch 1.0.4.0 users can use this version
- Alternatively you can also use the first person function from ZMenu which should work/look better and it haves more configurable options as well.
- Good for VR.
- Makes the Combat Shotgun icon better match the in-game model.
- Requires OpenIV.
- Fixes some character textures and makes the characters better match their EFLC appearances.
- Overhauls the game's visuals in several aspects while keeping stuff natural.
- Optimized for Version 1.0.4.0 but also compatible with patch 1.0.7.0, 1.0.8.0 and EFLC.
- Haves a lot of useful optionals.
- Requires OpenIV.
- Fixes many issues with gun animations, like the firing delay on the assault rifles.
- Alters the paths the planes take around the city.
- Requires OpenIV.
- N.O.O.S.E. and Ped Outfit Texture Fixes do not replace files from Grand Theft Auto IV and Episodes From Liberty City: Characters Fixes.
- Fixes coloring issues on the N.O.O.S.E., pedestrians and player textures.
- Player Outfit Texture Fixes replaces files from Grand Theft Auto IV and Episodes From Liberty City: Characters Fixes.
- For Versions 1.0.7.0/EFLC 1.1.2.0 (recommended) and 1.0.8.0/EFLC 1.1.3.0.
- Increases the gangs' hostility and violence and expands their influence, relying on proper backgrounds and story details.
- Fixes a coding error where some gangs should be more hostile after certain points in the game.
- Use IV.Project2DFX v4.3 for patch 1.0.4.0, 1.0.7.0 and 1.0.8.0!
- Requires an ASI Loader.
- Adds lod corona lights at greater distances which improves visuals a lot at night.
- Fixes the game's legacy D3D/DDraw renderer with DDrawCompat or translates it to DX11/12 or Vulkan renderers, likely giving better frame rates and less stutter.
- The game uses multi-core systems more efficiently.
- For Versions 1.0.7.0/EFLC 1.1.2.0 (recommended) and 1.0.8.0/EFLC 1.1.3.0.
- Rebalances gunplay, substantially reducing total ammo pool and magazine size and increasing damage output in guns, making firefights more challenging and engaging, where time to kill is shorter for both the player and enemies. Ammo and weapons are also more expensive now.
- Slightly adjusts the vehicle handling model.
- Makes many fixes/tweaks across the game, notably to vehicle flags/spawning.
- Better results with an ENB mod.
- Gives high-definition textures to roads.
- Various shader fixes and improvements for GTA IV 1.0.7.0, 1.0.8.0 and Complete Edition. The goal is to restore and fix everything from here.
- Restores and improves effects from the console versions, like depth of field, motion blur, volumetric lights, water and way more.
- Fixes and improves the game's visuals based on Liberty City's real life inspiration.
- Restores vegetation and graphical effects from the console versions of the game.
- Basic implementation of Xbox rain droplets from SkyGFX for other games.
