Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition is a compilation of three remastered games from the Grand Theft Auto series including Grand Theft Auto III, Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, and Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas.
The Definitive Edition release was very much similar to the original's, but with redone and AI upscaled textures and improved lighting. Data miners found that it was most likely based on the mobile ports of the originals, which feature numerous bugs, like broken bicycle physics in Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas. Upon release the game received severe criticism for its visuals, grammatical errors in upscaled textures, poor performance and technical issues. Compared to the original versions of the games, the custom soundtrack functionality from all three games[1][2] and custom player skin fuctionality of Grand Theft Auto III and Grand Theft Auto: Vice City were removed.
The games were released on the Rockstar Games Launcher on November 11, 2021 although they were made unavailable and unplayable a few hours later[3] after data miners discovered uncompiled source code[4] and unlicensed music from the original versions.[5][6] The games were made available for purchase again four days later.[7] More than a year later on January 19, 2023 the games were also made available on Steam.[8]
The original versions of the games released on the Rockstar Games Launcher featured an unencrypted archive allowing for mod support, though this was shortly thereafter changed to an encrypted archive. The games also received several updates correcting grammatical errors and fixing floating objects.
