Resident Evil 4 is a third-person action horror shooter developed by Capcom, ported by Sourcenext, and published by Ubisoft overseas and Capcom in Japan. It is the fourth mainline installment in the Resident Evil series.
The game was released for the Nintendo GameCube on January 11, 2005, and despite originally being exclusive to that system, it was ported to PlayStation 2 on October 25 the same year. A PC port of the game was outsourced to SourceNext and was released on May 15, 2007, however, it was based off the inferior PlayStation 2 port rather than the superior GameCube version, with even more problems than the former.[1] The PC version initially shipped with none of the game's original lighting, lower quality textures, inferior pre-rendered FMV videos than the PlayStation 2 version, and introduced bugs and crashes that were not present in the previous console versions. Despite being released on PC, the game does not support mouse controls whatsoever, and in-game button prompts only references generic button numbers rather than actual keys from the keyboard or standard console controllers. A patch was eventually released to address the technical issues and the poor visual downgrades. In response to the poor state the 2007 PC version was released in, Capcom hired QLOC to develop another PC port, which was released through Steam in 2014 as the Ultimate HD Edition.
There was a modding community attempting to fix other issues with the PC version, however, since the release of the Ultimate HD Edition, modders has moved onto creating mods for that version instead. A few legacy mods can still be found however.
Availability
- This version was not re-released digitally as it has been replaced by Resident Evil 4 Ultimate HD Edition.
Essential improvements
Patches
- The game originally shipped with heavily downgraded visuals compared to the console versions. Patch v1.1.0 drastically enhances graphics, lighting and VFXs, and also fixes crashes which would occur when trying to skip certain cutscenes. The patch for the European, German, and Russian releases can be found here, while patches for Asian and German releases can be found at The Patches Scrolls. If the patch fails to update the mid-way through installation, run the patch as administrator.[2] The North American release of the game is already pre-patched with the v1.1.0 update.
4GB Patch
- This tool patches the game executable allowing it to make use of a maximum of 4GB of RAM instead of just 2GB of RAM. It is highly recommended to apply this patch to the game's executable for improved stability and prevent crashes. Can be downloaded Here.

Modifications
Matrixcn's 720p Cutscenes
- A higher quality FMV replacement pack with re-encoded 720p pre-rendered video files recorded from the Wii edition's in-engine cutscenes.
albert's Texture Patch 2.0
- A high-resolution texture pack from one of the creators of the HD Project for the Ultimate HD Edition. Ports over the GameCube quality textures over into the PC version.
albert's High Resolution EFF-TPL Texture Replacement Pack v1.1
- Includes European v1.1.0 and Korean v1.0.0/v1.1.0 No-DVD executables but are required for this mod to work correctly.
- An extension of albert's Texture Patch that replaces the low resolution textures for the HUD, menus, fonts, and effects with higher resolution ones. This pack can also remove the film grain effect present in the game, options for different item pick up aurora effects, and alternate controller prompt replacements for generic gamepads, Xbox, Xbox 360, PlayStation 2, or PlayStation 3 controller icons.
- Requires launching the game through Texmod every time, which is prone to causing bugs and/or crashes depending on the texture injection method being used and longer boot times. The Package Build method can cause the pre-rendered FMVs to be replaced with one of the newly replaced textures at random, and the Logging Mode method can make the game less stable and can cause the game to crash or freeze.[11] The high-res fonts also requires the controller bindings to be remapped to one of the chosen preset configurations based on the controller prompt replacements in order to display correctly.
finaly's MouseAim Patch
- An unofficial patch implements the ability to aim with the mouse by emulating gamepad controls.
- Mouse movement is digital due to its gamepad-to-mouse emulation and is not properly calibrated. Launching the game with this mod installed will also disables controller support.[12]
St.Vampyre's Laser Tweak v1.5
- Java is required to be installed for this tool to function. The latest version of Java can be downloaded here.
- A tool that allows the ability to change the opacity and color of the laser sight. It also allows the ability to decrease the size of the laser dot and toggle HUD visibility.
ENBSeries for RE4
- Can greatly improve the look of the game's lighting.
- May severely impact performance and the default settings clashes with the original lighting from the console versions.
How to return to the title screen
- The 2007 PC version of Resident Evil 4 does not make it clear for players on how to quit the game to the title screen.
Press the Start button → select Retry or Load → select Game Reset and choose Yes[13] |
