Issues unresolved
Verify game data error on Windows 10 Insider
- Following a Rockstar Games Launcher update in April 2020, attempting to launch the game while participating in the Windows Insider Program may result in the "Unable to launch game, please verify your game data." error message.[34]
Briefly disconnect from the internet[35][36]
|
- Have the game-related launchers running while online and disconnect from the internet by disabling the connection, unplugging the cable or by other means.
- Click to launch the game and connect to the internet right away.
- Quit the game after encountering the authentication failed error.
- Launch the game again.
|
Opt out of the Insider program and return to the previous version of Windows 10.[37][38]
|
Issues fixed
Game crashing
- For some the game crashes every 15-20 minutes and there are reports of that happening years after the game's release.
It seems that the game doesn't like overlay software.
|
- Disable RivaTunerStatistics Server. If you use Afterburner, RTSS might pop back up again. In that case, rename RTSS.exe file to something else. if the issue persists, close Afterburner entirely.
- Close other overlays provided by Steam, Origin and Epic etc.
|
- The game may crash on launch, resulting in the "Red Dead Redemption 2 on PC exited unexpectedly" error message.
See the related Rockstar Games support articles containing possible solutions
|
|
- Controller users of the Steam version of the game have reported crashes on launch.
Disable Steam Input[39][40]
|
- Right-click the game in the library and select Properties.
- Under Steam Input Per-Game Setting (Requires restart of game), select Forced Off from the dropdown menu.
|
- Possible workarounds exist for crashes on launch related to having set the Graphics API to DirectX 12.[41]
- A November 25, 2019 game update addressed an issue of crashes related to switching between Vulkan and DirectX 12.[42]
Install DirectX Graphics Tools on Windows 10[43][44]
|
- Use the taskbar search functionality to locate Manage optional features.
- In the newly opened window, click on Add a feature.
- Find Graphics Tools on the list, click on it and select Install.
|
Set the Graphics API to Vulkan in the config file[43]
|
- Go to the configuration file(s) location.
- Open
system.xml in a text editor.
- Locate
kSettingAPI_DX12 and change it to kSettingAPI_Vulkan
- Alternatively, move the file from the folder to reset the game settings.
|
Launcher crashing
- Attempting to launch the game may result in the "Rockstar Launcher exited unexpectedly" error message.[45]
Set audio output device to Nvidia High Definition Audio[49]
|
- On Windows 10, right-click the speaker icon in the tray on the taskbar and select Open Sound settings.
- Under Output, select the NVIDIA High Definition Audio device.
- Only applies to Nvidia graphics cards.
|
'ERR_GFX_STATE' after loading game
- This error message has been reported to appear after the November 13, 2019 game update.[50][51]
Clear graphics cache files[53][54]
|
- Go to the configuration file(s) location.
- Delete all files beginning with
sga_ (e.g. sga_vulkan_final_init.vkPipelineCacheWindows).
- Launch the game and load the current save game.
- Move the character to a different area and make a new save.
|
Change in-game graphics API to DirectX 12[55]
|
- Go to the Settings menu in the game.
- Open the Graphics settings.
- Scroll down to the Advanced Graphics section.
- Make sure the Advanced Settings option is set to "Unlocked".
- Change the Graphics API setting to "DirectX 12".
- Apply the settings and restart the game.
- Using the workaround to make a new save from the old and switching back to Vulkan is a possibility.
|
Black screen on launch
- Launching the game and passing the intro videos may result in a black screen.[56]
Using an Nvidia graphics card, update to driver version 442.74.[57]
|
Press Alt+↵ Enter in the game.[56]
|
Set the Graphics API to DirectX 12 in the config file[56]
|
- Go to the configuration file(s) location.
- Open
system.xml in a text editor.
- Locate
kSettingAPI_Vulkan and change it to kSettingAPI_DX12
|
Game stuttering
- Multiple players have reported in-game stuttering related to high CPU usage.[58][59]
- The issue was addressed in the November 19, 2019 game update.[60]
- Rockstar Games recommend that Nvidia users update to GeForce Hotfix Driver Version 441.34 and remove any launch arguments used to work around the problem.[60]
- Amend the aiTextureMaxMem_3_Base within the gameconfig.xml from 2500 to 90000 (Or your preferred amount) and this will eliminate the stutter. Mods are available on the nexus.
- Some users have reported better performance in the DirectX 12 mode of the game.[61]
Change in-game graphics API to DirectX 12
|
- Go to the Settings menu in the game.
- Open the Graphics settings.
- Scroll down to the Advanced Graphics section.
- Make sure the Advanced Settings option is set to "Unlocked".
- Change the Graphics API setting to "DirectX 12".
- Apply the settings and restart the game.
|
Persistent mouse cursor
- The system mouse cursor may persistently appear on top of the game window.[62]
- Commonly reported by owners of the Epic Games Store version of the game prior to the November 19, 2019 game update that addressed the issue.[60][63]
Install update KB4522741 on Windows 10[64]
|
- Search for and click on Check for updates using the taskbar search functionality.
- In the newly opened window, click on Check for updates and fully update the operating system.
|
Display mouse pointer trails[65]
|
- On Windows 10, search for and click on Mouse settings using the taskbar search functionality.
- On the right sidebar, click on Additional mouse options.
- Select the Pointer Options tab.
- Under Visibility, click on Display pointer trails to check its box.
- Click on OK to apply the change.
- Launch the game and enable VSync in the Graphics settings.
- Hides the cursor in the game, resulting in inability to use it to navigate menu screens unless the box is unchecked again.
|
Incorrect resolution at launch
- The game may start at an incorrect resolution, resulting in out-of-screen elements and inability to reach the graphics settings.[66][67]
Use the -width and -height command line arguments[46]
|
- Go to Settings within the Rockstar Games Launcher.
- Click on Red Dead Redemption 2 under My installed games.
- Add
-width 1920 -height 1080 as Launch arguments or change the width and height values as desired.
|
Incorrect UI scaling at wide resolutions
- In-game UI elements including the HUD, map and menu screens might scale incorrectly at ultra-wide and multi-monitor resolutions.[69]
- This might have been fixed by patch 1.31, though it remains to be tested.
Set Screen Type to Windowed Borderless in the Graphics settings.[70]
|
- HDR doesn't work in Bordelss mode with Vulkan
|
Edit a config file to center the HUD or set the horizontal safezone to any percentage[71]
|
- Go to the configuration file(s) location.
- Open the file that starts with
400042567_ in a text editor.
- Locate the line
<Item key="7014661855" type="rage__fwuiValueFloat">
- On the next line, modify the float value to the desired percentage of the safezone (e.g.
0.33 for 33%).
- Save the changes.
- Right-click the file and select Properties.
- Check the Read-only box to prevent the game from making permanent changes to it.
- Changing Screen type or going into the HUD Safezone menu will reset the changes until the game is restarted.
|

|
- Download and install Cheat Engine.
- Download the cheat table.
- Launch Cheat Engine and the game.
- From the File menu of Cheat Engine, click on Open Process.
- Select the game process and click on Open.
- From the File menu, click on Load (Ctrl+O).
- Locate the downloaded cheat table and click on Open.
- Check the Active box in the bottom area of Cheat Engine to activate the fix.
- Adjust the horizontal safezone in the game to have it set to 33%.

UAC prompt when run through Epic Games Launcher
Alt-Tabbing out of fullscreen mode enables borderless window
- Under some circumstances, alt-tabbing out of fullscreen mode resets the game to borderless window.
Press Alt-Enter to toggle and re-enable fullscreen.
|
Game stops rendering when in focus after Alt-Tabbing out of fullscreen mode
- When using Vulkan, Alt-Tabbing out of the fullscreen game can make the game stop rendering when in focus under certain circumstances.
The Windows version, resolution, HDR and G-Sync settings don't seem to influence this problem.[73]
Press Alt-Enter to toggle and re-enable fullscreen.
|
HDR fails to engage in borderless mode
- When using Vulkan, the game might think HDR is on while failing to engage it, allowing you to enter the HDR calibration menu in SDR.
Whether HDR or Auto HDR are enabled in Windows makes no difference.
HDR looks washed out
- HDR can look washed out even after calibration, never reaching the maximum brightness of your monitor while still lacking shadow and highlight detail, independently of the game settings or monitor.
Nvidia users can use Nvidia Freestyle to fix it[74]
|
- Open the game and enable HDR, if it's not enabled already.
- Open the in game HDR calibration menu.
- Set the HDR mode to "Cinematic" (default) and Paper white to "80" (minimum).
- Open Nvidia Freestyle (Game filter) with its shortcut key (Alt+F3 by default).
- Select one of the "Styles" boxes from the sidebar overlay that appears (e.g. 1).
- Select the "Brightness/Contrast" filter from the "Add Filter" button.
- Set all the sliders to 0% to achieve a baseline.
- Increase the "Exposure" to your liking. Good values are usually between 9% and 55%, depending on your monitor max nits.
Looking at the clouds is a good way to make sure you don't lose any highlight details.
- Press the same shortcut to close it.
|
Game won't start with Nvidia drivers > 522.25 (using Vulkan API) [75]
Red Dead Redemption 2 crashes instantly after starting with Nvidia drivers version newer than 522.25 because the Vulkan drivers included since then won't work anymore with RDR2.
The RDR2.exe will start shortly and close without an error message, not even in the Log files, no black screen.
Everything greater than Vulkan version 1.3.204.1 will crash the game.
Delete Vulkan drivers files and install official Vulkan drivers version 1.3.204.1
|
If you want to run RDR2 with the most recent Vulkan drivers which work with RDR2 you need to delete these files:
- WINDOWS_DIR\SysWOW64\vulkan-1.dll
- WINDOWS_DIR\SysWOW64\vulkan-1-999-0-0-0.dll
- WINDOWS_DIR\System32\vulkan-1.dll
- WINDOWS_DIR\System32\vulkan-1-999-0-0-0.dll
- WINDOWS_DIR\System32\vulkaninfo-1-999-0-0-0.exe
- WINDOWS_DIR\SysWOW64\vulkaninfo-1-999-0-0-0.exe
and install VulkanRT-1.3.204.1-Installer.exe from the Official Vulkan Homepage.
