Mods and issues need cleaning up, especially the essential improvements section. You can help by
modifying
the article. The
discussion page may contain useful suggestions.
Key points
- Includes redone lighting, upscaled and enhanced textures, a new "Very Easy" difficulty, a new optional control scheme (tank controls are optional), BSAA outfits from Resident Evil 5, and 60 FPS support.
- When using the 30 or 60 FPS options, the game speed is tied to the frame rate. So if you drop frames, the game will slow down. Not so with the variable option.
- Internal rendering resolution is forced at 1920x1440, which can cause performance issues on some low-medium range systems. See Poor performance or slowdowns.
- Some soundtracks in the game are reproduced faster than the original version. Install the Fixed background music to patch this bug.

Essential improvements
- This patch raises the volume of the background music, which may be too quiet, and fixes an issue with certain tracks playing too fast.

Video
In-game aspect ratio settings.
Widescreen comparison. Note how the chandelier in the top right corner is missing in the widescreen version. Because of this, purists should choose 4:3 mode.
- Player can toggle between original 4:3 or cropped pan-and-scan 16:9. The game uses pre-rendered backgrounds which are all stuck in 4:3.
- In 16:9 aspect ratio, the 4:3 backgrounds are cropped and zoomed in with a camera pan added as the character moves higher and lower on the screen. Unfortunately, many areas are still cropped on the top or bottom in 16:9, so purists will want to choose 4:3 original aspect ratio. FMVs and cutscenes are also cropped in 16:9.
Adjust aspect ratio[citation needed]
|
- Go to the configuration file(s) location.
- Open
config.ini .
- Add Aspect=4:3 under
[DISPLAY] section (adjust it accordingly)
Notes
- Make sure to still use in-game 4:3 setting
- The game will no longer be letterboxed during gameplay, but all FMVs and 2D elements will be squished from 16:9 (even 4:3 FMVs)[2]
- Putting Aspect=16:10 removes letterboxing in 16:10 screens but is stretched vertically

Notes
- If you find this isn't working for your resolution, try moving the files to the "01" folder instead

Set mute in background[6]
|

Issues unresolved
Swapped animations
- In the elevator of the laboratory, the one that goes into the lowest floor, the animations of going up and down are swapped. This can cause a minor confusion in the player.[citation needed]
Issues fixed
Game fails to start
- The game may fail to start on newer systems, displaying a black window for a brief moment before quitting.
- The first cause may be NVIDIA's Enhanced GPU Scaling feature.
Disable Enhanced GPU Scaling
|
- Open the NVIDIA Control Panel
- Navigate to
Manage 3D settings
- Select
Image Sharpening
- Deselect the
GPU Scaling checkbox, and apply settings
|
- The second cause may be that the game does not support very high resolutions.
Disable Dynamic Super Resolution
|
- Open the NVIDIA Control Panel
- Navigate to
Manage 3D settings
- Select
DSR - Factors
- Disable scaling factors that create resolutions much higher than 4K, and apply settings.
In my testing, 5K (5120×2880) will crash the game, but 4703×2645 (4K at 1.50×) does not.
Ultra-wide resolutions, such as 3840×1600, may also cause the game to crash.
|
- The third cause may be NVIDIA'S Vertical sync setting.
Disable Vertical sync in NVIDIA Control Panel
|
- Open the NVIDIA Control Panel.
- Navigate to
Manage 3D settings .
- Set
Vertical sync to either Use the 3D application setting or Off.
If this solves the issue, you can create an exception for this game in the Program Settings tab. That way, you can have Vertical sync enabled globally for your other games, but have it disabled only for this game.
|
- The fourth cause may be output colour depth set too high.
Switch to 8 bpc
|
- Open the NVIDIA Control Panel.
- Navigate to
Change resolution .
- Set
Output colour depth to 8 bpc.

Poor performance or slowdowns
- The mod below may dramatically increase FPS. It works by removing an unneeded call to query the game for its current state every frame.
- The mod below allows you to override the texture creation parameters (width and height) that the game uses while creating the various textures. This can help with lower-end systems that have FPS problems.
Run the game at screen refresh rate
- Fullscreen mode only offers the option to use a refresh rate of 60 Hz or less, even if the screen refresh rate is set higher than that.
Set screen refresh rate[6]
|
- Install Special K version 0.8.65 by following the Special K Unofficial Guide. Manual local installation may work better.
- Start the game once and close it to allow the configuration file of Special K to be created.
- Open
<path-to-game>\d3d9.ini or %USERPROFILE%\Documents\My Mods\SpecialK\Profiles\bhd.exe\SpecialK.ini depending on the installation method you used.
- Change
RefreshRate=-1 to RefreshRate=0 under [Render.FrameRate] .
|
Use ForceFix
|
- Install recommended software and system updates, if for Windows 7, under Ideal Conditions from Steam Guide.
- Download version of ForceFix for your operating system from Steam Guide.
- Unpack the archive and launch ForceFix.
- For refresh rates above 60 Hz, set frequency under Custom tab and Apply.
Notes
- By default, the refresh rate in the game will go back to normal once you close the program. You can change it by unchecking Restore on Close option.

Mouse cursor visible during gameplay
Auto-hide mouse cursor[6]
|
- Install Special K by following the Special K Unofficial Guide. Manual local installation may work better.
- Start the game and press Ctrl+⇧ Shift+← Backspace to toggle Special K's Control Panel.
- Expand Input Management and Mouse Cursor.
- Enable Hide When Not Moved and adjust Seconds Before Hiding to your liking.

RE1 real time graphics mod incompatible with Special K (DOESN'T WORK)
Fix compatibility issues[10]
|
- Install the Resident Evil 1 real time graphics mod to the installation folder.
- Rename its
d3d9.dll to something else, e.g. visiond3d9.dll .
- Do the manual local installation of Special K by following the Special K Unofficial Guide.
- Start the game once and close it to allow the configuration file of Special K to be created.
- Add the following to Special K's
d3d9.ini file. Adjust visiond3d9 to the proper name from step two.
[Import.visiond3d9]
Architecture=Win32
Role=ThirdParty
When=PlugIn
Filename=visiond3d9.dll

Other information
Mods
- Some mods might require Fluffy manager 5000.
Bug fixes/improvements
- RE1 real time graphics mod Restores the lighting system from the Gamecube/Wii Version, one noticeable difference is that the blacks are less crushed. Some Nvidia users have reported frequent ERR08 Memory Overrun crashes when using this mod on more modern video drivers.
Video enhancements
the version by FluffyQuack, or the one built-in to Fluffy Manager.
- UI Improvements Improves the resolution of the UI, redoes the icons using the in-game models and restores the gamecube font, although the font is compatible with English, Japanese and Spanish. A recreation of the gamecube font compatible with more languages is available * here.
