Resident Evil HD Remaster[Note 1] is a singleplayer survival horror game co-developed by K2 and Tose and published by Capcom. It is part of the Resident Evil series.
The game is an enhanced re-release of the 2002 GameCube game Resident Evil[Note 2], which itself is a remake of the 1996 game of the same name and chronologically set after the event of Resident Evil 0 and followed by Resident Evil 2 and Resident Evil 3. The HD Remaster features redone lighting, upscaled and enhanced textures, a new "Very Easy" difficulty, a new optional control scheme (tank controls are optional), BSAA outfits from Resident Evil 5, and 60 FPS support.
The game was released on January 20, 2015.
The game speed is tied to the frame rate and as such, it will slow down when it start dropping frames with either 30 FPS or 60 FPS options selected, and the only way to avoid it is to choose the variable frame rate option. Because the game's internal rendering resolution is always renders at 1920x1440, it can cause performance issues on some low range systems (See Poor performance or slowdowns for workaround). There is also a bug where some soundtracks in the game are reproduced faster than the original version, which requires a patch.

Widescreen resolution
- Player can toggle between original 4:3 or cropped pan-and-scan 16:9. The game uses pre-rendered backgrounds which are all stuck in 4:3.
- In 16:9 aspect ratio, the 4:3 backgrounds are cropped and zoomed in with a camera pan added as the character moves higher and lower on the screen. Unfortunately, many areas are still cropped on the top or bottom in 16:9, so purists will want to choose 4:3 original aspect ratio. FMVs and cutscenes are also cropped in 16:9.

Issues fixed
Swapped animations
- In the elevator of the laboratory, the one that goes into the lowest floor, the animations of going up and down are swapped. This can cause a minor confusion in the player.[7]

Game fails to start
- The game may fail to start on newer systems, displaying a black window for a brief moment before quitting.
- The first cause may be NVIDIA's Enhanced GPU Scaling feature.
Disable Enhanced GPU Scaling |
---|
|
- The second cause may be that the game does not support very high resolutions.
Disable Dynamic Super Resolution |
---|
In my testing, 5K (5120×2880) will crash the game, but 4703×2645 (4K at 1.50×) does not. Ultra-wide resolutions, such as 3840×1600, may also cause the game to crash. |
- The third cause may be NVIDIA'S Vertical sync setting.
Disable Vertical sync in NVIDIA Control Panel |
---|
If this solves the issue, you can create an exception for this game in the Program Settings tab. That way, you can have Vertical sync enabled globally for your other games, but have it disabled only for this game. |
- The fourth cause may be output colour depth set too high.
Switch to 8 bpc |

Poor performance or slowdowns
- The mod below works by removing an unneeded call to query the game for its current state every frame, potentially improving performance.
Use Resident Evil Fusion Fix |
---|
|
- The mod below allows you to override the texture creation parameters (width and height) that the game uses while creating the various textures. This can help with lower-end systems that have FPS problems.

Crashes before/after cutscenes (ERR08 : Memory overrun)
- The x86 executable only uses 2GB of RAM, which can cause crashes.
Use 4GB Patch tool[9] |
---|
Run the game at screen refresh rate
- Fullscreen mode only offers the option to use a refresh rate of 60 Hz or less, even if the screen refresh rate is set higher than that.

Mods
- Some mods might require Fluffy manager 5000.
Bug fixes/improvements
- RE1 real time graphics mod restores the lighting system from the GameCube/Wii version. One noticeable difference is that the blacks are less crushed. Some Nvidia users have reported frequent ERR08 Memory Overrun crashes when using this mod on more modern video drivers. See Crashes before/after cutscenes (ERR08 : Memory overrun)[11].
- Fixed background music raises the volume of the background music, which may be too quiet, and fixes an issue with certain tracks playing too fast.
Video enhancements
- REupscale project uses AI upscaling to HDify the backgrounds.
- Resident Evil Fusion Fix removes the door loading sequences along with QoL improvements. If it doesn't work, try the version by FluffyQuack, or the one built-in to Fluffy Manager.
- UI Improvements improves the resolution of the UI, redoes the icons using the in-game models and restores the gamecube font, although the font is compatible with English, Japanese and Spanish. A recreation of the gamecube font compatible with more languages is available * here.
Force 1080p 20 Mbps video files
- For displays with a lower resolution than 1080p.
