General Crash Advice
+
# Go to the configuration file(s) location.
* Make sure that you have the latest official update, or any well known unofficial crash fixes.
+
# Open Skyrim.ini.
* Check for problems with your graphics driver (outdated, corrupt or buggy drivers can cause major faults).
+
# Go to the <code>[General]</code> section.
** Utilities bundled with some NVIDIA cards (Smartdoctor, GameOSD and Splendid) have been known to cause crashes and performance issues. Try uninstalling these.
+
# Add the following line <code>sIntroSequence=</code>.
* For Steam versions, verify the game cache (right click the game in your library, choose "Properties", navigate to the "Local Files" tab and choose "Verify integrity of game cache").
+
# Save your changes.
* Deactivate recently installed mods.
+
}}
* If you are experiencing crashing after installing a mod with the Nexus Mod Manager, check the plugins.txt file to see if 'skyrim.esp' is listed twice. If so, remove one so there is only a single instance of 'skyrim.esp'

** Windows XP Location: C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\Local Settings\Application Data\skyrim

** Windows Vista\7 Location:  C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Local\skyrim

* If experiencing crashing with loading saved games and WETrigger<(xxxxx)> Error OnInit() type errors after installing mods, install the Creation Kit for better compatability

*If you install Skyrim and run the launcher and it only has the option to install, locate your Skyrim installation directory and find SkyrimLauncher.exe. Right-click the application and open the properties. Go to the 'Compatibility' tab and under 'Privilege Level' check 'Run this program as administrator'. Apply the settings and then run the launcher again.

* If your PC shuts down during graphically intense scenes, make sure you power supply unit is a high enough wattage to support your graphics card.

Disable Mouse Smoothing/Acceleration
+

Mouse Smoothing is a feature in game engines designed to give users a smoother feel to mouse movements. However, many users prefer to turn off this feature as it may cause accuracy issues or feel unnatural/uncomfortable.

To disable mouse smoothing, navigate to <pre>C:\Users\%USERNAME%\Documents\My Games\Skyrim\</pre> and edit SkyrimPrefs.ini. In the [Controls] section, change:
+
Enabling data files
Fix Shadow Striping Caused by Lights
+
Mod Organizer
The mod Shadow Striping Fix fixes an issue with shadows in vanilla Skyrim. It does not have a special requirement, and can be easily installed by using the Nexus Mod Manager. Alternatively, you may download the file manually and place its contents in the Steam\steamapps\common\skyrim\Data folder. Once you've installed the data files, enable "Shadow Striping Fix.esp" through the Skyrim Launcher's "Data Files" option or the Nexus Mod Manager.

Disable V-Sync
+
Corrupted NIFs Patches - CNP
Disabling V-Sync may aid in eliminating mouse lag and improving performance. However, disabling V-Sync may result in the following:
+
ii Replaces NIF files in the official game files and mods for a CTD-Free game.
* Screen tearing.
+
Greatly reduces the amount of CTD to occur during in-game.
* Hyper-sensitive vertical mouse movement when getting high FPS (above 60).

* In-game physics and timing glitches.

These issues can be partially or fully resolved by using an external FPS limiter or by enabling Triple Buffering through software like RivaTuner or your GPU's control panel.

To disable V-Sync, edit the file SkyrimPrefs.ini found in <pre>C:\Users\%USERNAME%\Documents\My Games\Skyrim\</pre> Edit the following line:

  iPresentInterval=1

To:

  iPresentInterval=0

Running SKSE
Skyrim has its fair share of graphical bugs and faults. Fortunately, there are many tweaks available to PC users in order to rectify graphical issues.

Custom Resolution
+
Notes
Skyrim's launcher has a limited choice of game resolution options, which may not account for a large amount of users who want to use a custom resolution (e.g. 640x480 for players on low-end machines).
+
ii Remember to fix the FPS using the Proton launch command.
 +
ii To reorganise mods, restore the original launcher.

Change Field of View
+
ENB
Skyrim's default FoV is 75, which is OK for many people but may seem like too much or too little for others.
+
<!-- Needs to be cleaned up -->

ii Use the installation instructions from the preset if used.
 +
Fixes issue when there is no more available video memory, a problem that occurs when using high resolution texture mods.
 +

ii Only install weather helper mod if preset requires it.

Change ## to your desired FoV (80, 90, 100, etc.) in all of the lines above and save both files. You should also set both SkyrimPrefs.ini and Skyrim.ini to be "Read-only" files.
+
Game data
*You can change the FoV manually while in-game through the console (accessible through the ~ key). Use the command "fov ##" and hit enter (## = your desired FoV). To close the console, hit the ~ key once more. Changing FoV manually is useful for experimenting and finding the optimal FoV setting for your system and personal preference. However, manual FoV changes reset every time you exit the game.

uGrids Tweak
+
Field of view (FOV)
Skyrim is divided into small areas called uGrids. Changing the amount of uGrids loaded at any given time will change the detail level of distant locations (i.e. improve view distance). Skyrim loads the five nearest uGrids by default. Before changing this value, consult the following:
+
{{Fixbox|description=Modify configuration file|ref=|fix=
* Altering back and forth between uGridsToLoad values may corrupt your saved games. Create a backup of your save files before attempting to tweak this value.
+
# Go to the configuration file(s) location.
* Changing the uGridsToLoad value to anything higher than the default value may cause severe performance issues on some systems.
+
# Open Skyrim.ini.
* Changing the uGridsToLoad value to anything higher than 7 or lower than 5 may be unstable.
+
# Add the following lines under the [Display] section:
* An example of uGridsToLoad=5 versus uGridsToLoad=7 can be found here.
+
<pre>
To change the amount of uGrids loaded, edit the file Skyrim.ini found in <pre>C:\Users\%USERNAME%\Documents\My Games\Skyrim\</pre> In the [General] section add the following line:
+
fDefault1stPersonFOV=X
  uGridsToLoad=#
+
fDefaultWorldFOV=X
Change # to the desired number of uGrids you wish to load (must be an odd number - 7, 9, 11) and save the file.

Anti-aliasing and FXAA
+
{{Fixbox|description=Console command|ref=|fix=
You can enable Anti-aliasing from the game's launcher. However, you may want to consult the following:
+
# Open the console ingame (~) and type in the following: fov X.
* It appears that using the 8x setting over 4x causes a heavy performance decrease with no significant image quality improvement.
+
# Replace X with your preferred FOV.
* Turning on FXAA in the advanced options menu increases performance significantly when using Anti-aliasing but results in a slightly blurrier image.

Anisotropic Filtering
+
Notes
You can enable Anisotropic Filtering from the game's launcher. Enabling Anisotropic Filtering will cause a great improvement in image quality with a very low drop in FPS, and is highly recommended for any modern graphics card. The optimal setting is 8x, as it provides the best quality-to-performance ratio.

ii This is not permanent, the FOV will reset after restarting the game.

Mods
+
Notes
Skyrim, like many of Bethesda Game Studios' games, enjoys a prolific modding scene. Mods are usually uploaded to central hubs like Skyrim Nexus or Planet Elder Scrolls, where they can be downloaded easily and free of charge by users. Skyrim also marked a turning point in game modding, as it is the first ever game to utilise the Steam Workshop for public mod releases. Users can subscribe to mods through the Workshop and have them automatically delivered and updated by using the game's launcher.

Mod Incompatibility
+
Notes
Some mods are not compatible with other mods. This can be caused by poor coding, engine issues or both mods altering the same game files. Incompatibility could cause game crashes, disappearing textures and other faults. It is generally recommended to read the descriptions and "Readme" files of mods, as they contain installation guides and notes about compatibility and/or incompatibility with other mods. You should not use two mods that are known to conflict with each other if they do not have a compatibility patch.

SKSE

Available as a Steam-based mod for ease-of-use.
Required by some mods.
SKSE on Linux Through Proton

If you are running Skyrim through proton and have mods installed which required SKSE, you can do the following.

Installing Mods
 • Mods can be installed either through steam's workshop, Nexus Mod Manager, or manually.
 • Remember to run Skyrim before the steps below (Running SKSE) to allow your mods to populate.
 • Remember to enable the mods you want

Running SKSE
 1. Install SKSE through Steam
 2. Browse to <path-to-game>
 3. Rename SkyrimLauncher.exe to SkyrimLauncher.exe.bak
 4. Rename skse_loader.exe to SkyrimLauncher.exe
 5. Run Skyrim through Proton.

Notes

Remember to fix the FPS using the Proton launch command.
To reorganise mods, restore the original launcher.
Save bloating cleaner[citation needed]

This is a partial fix for loose scripts, more advanced editing is required in order to remove broken scripts which may be stuck on the game's currently used thread.

 1. Go to <path-to-game>\data\SKSE
 2. Open SKSE.ini.
 3. Add ClearInvalidRegistrations=1 under the [General] section.
Memory Management Fix[citation needed]

This fixes crashes and infinite loading screens that occur when the game engine fails to allocate more memory than the engine was originally intended to due to modding.[4]

Only works with SKSE 1.7 or newer.
 1. Go to <path-to-game>\data\SKSE.
 2. Open SKSE.ini.
 3. Add the following lines under the [Memory] section.
DefaultHeapInitialAllocMB=768
ScrapHeapSizeMB=256

Notes

To figure out if you need the extra memory you can use the SKSE plugin Memory Blocks Log. This can reduce performance and should only be used while testing.

ENB

Use the installation instructions from the preset if used.
Fixes issue when there is no more available video memory, a problem that occurs when using high resolution texture mods.
Allows for significant graphical improvements, such as real-time reflections, image-based lighting, and volumetric sky rendering.
Can force V-sync, frame limiter, and Borderless-Windowed mode.
Installing ENB Without graphical improvements[citation needed]
 1. Download the version of the ENB for Skyrim.
 2. Unzip files and transfer all files inside "WrapperVersion" to the installation folder.
 3. Open enblocal.ini with Notepad and use the enblocal.ini Setup Guide to assist with the settings. Make sure "UsePatchSpeedhackWithoutGraphics" and "SpeedHack" is set to "True".

Notes

You have to start the game with enbhost.exe if SKSE is not installed.
Only install weather helper mod if preset requires it.

This reduce "input lag" as well as eliminates the screen tearing that would occur when playing with v-sync normally off.
This is only suitable for certain PC configurations: ie. 60 Hz monitor with a high-end GPU which is able to render TES V: Skyrim over 60 FPS constantly.

Frame rate (FPS)

Nvidia have added a FPS cap fail-safe to the game. Use Nvidia Profile Inspector to disable FPS cap.
These tweaks allow playing the game at high frame rates without the known physics problems that occur. It is possible this fix will negatively affect scripts and cause unforeseen issues. Use at your own risk.
Automatically fix high FPS physics[8]
This method has the advantage of preventing FPS drops caused by the game not being able to achieve the target FPS.
 1. Install SKSE.
 2. Install the SKSE Havok Fix mod.

Notes

The plugin will automatically edit iPresentInterval to an appropriate value for the current FPS.
Manually fix high FPS physics[5]
 1. Go to the configuration file(s) location.
 2. Open Skyrim.ini.
 3. Under section [Display] add line iPresentInterval=0
 4. Add the section [HAVOK] and under it add line fMaxTime=(1 / Desired refresh rate) to correct the physics, e.g. for a 144 Hz monitor you would add fMaxTime=0.0069.

Notes

Skyrim must still be limited to the new refresh rate in order to avoid glitches
Set Refresh rate on 60hz[citation needed]

Linux Notes for FPS Limiting through Proton

You can limit the fps by entering DXVK_FRAME_RATE=60 %command% into steam's launch options. Once Again this will fix weird physics and rendering issues
