Key points

It is recommended to play using an XInput-compatible controller.
Features dual audio English and Japanese for the ROW release, though the Japanese FMVs are a mandatory download and can be deleted to save 20GB.
Exceptionally well optimized with relatively low CPU and GPU usage, allowing it to run on low spec setups reasonably well. Also supports up to 60FPS.
Uses a non-configurable aggressive automatic variable frame rate limiter which can cause inconsistent FPS. Potential workarounds are here.
Internal resolution is locked at 1280x720; use GeDoSaTo for more resolutions.
Esc instantly exits the game (no prompt) in full screen mode.
Uses Bink for FMVs which have slight artifacts and are worse than the PS3 version.[1]
Extremely poor pixelated and jagged shadows.[2]
Has poor 2D textures (such as font and HUD) that are hidden because of the 720p.
The game has a low volume level that is about half as loud as a typical game. There are no in-game volume options so turning up the PC volume is recommended. If you are streaming or recording the game with commentary, you may want to decrease your microphone volume.

Essential improvements

Remove unused FMVs to free up space

If you aren't interested in Japanese voice acting you can free up about 20 GB of space by removing Japanese FMV files.[3]
Instructions

Better 720p upscaling

Ignore this if you want to use GeDeSaTo.

For NVIDIA users, in the NVIDIA control panel, under "Adjust desktop size and position", perform scaling set to GPU instead of the display. Also set the "Aspect Ratio" to "Full screen". This leaves the monitor at its resolution and allows the GPU to upscale the game instead of relying on the monitor.

GeDeSaTo

File:FF13G.jpg
The game at 2560x1440 resolution.

Download it, make sure it is updated (use GeDoSaToUpdater which comes along with it), go to Edit Settings, and use the "ffxiiiimg" profile in the bottom left. Tweak the profile to your liking and save the profile. Then simply run the game.

Can support higher resolutions, as well as 4K.
May decrease performance.
The poor 2D textures (such as font and HUD) that are hidden because of the 720p will show, and they will be very pixelated.
Using Alt+Tab in full screen mode with GeDeSaTo will crash the game. As a workaround, you can use Windowed Borderless Gaming and begin the game in windowed mode.

Issues fixed

Inconsistent 60FPS

While occasional FPS drops below 60FPS are common, the game uses a automatic frame rate limiter that aggressively caps the frame rate for limited periods of time if the frame rate falls below the cap for too long. As most of the game is optimized to the point where modern GPUs generally enter power-saving mode, sometimes even switching to the on-board GPU, whenever more GPU usage is needed (such as in battles or loading) and the GPU switches out of power-saving mode the frame rate may fall long enough to the point where the game's frame rate limiter will cap the frame rate at a lower value, sometimes even causing the GPU to enter power-saving mode again, often resulting in an in-practice cap of 30FPS or lower. To avoid this, keep your frame rate as consistent as possible, ideally preventing your GPU or Windows from entering power-saving mode entirely.
Instructions
The mini-map can drop the framerate up to 10-20FPS, depending on the scenes. The mini-map can be toggled off in-game.
Turning off all AA (even FXAA) in the GPU control panel may change 30FPS into 60FPS.
Some users have reported that using a controller instead of mouse/keyboard increases FPS and prevents stuttering.[4] If you don't have a controller, vJoy is an alternative. This may be because the game is searching for an input device and timing out, causing the stutter. It fires the event every one second.
Disabling hyperthreading on Intel processors may also help.[5]

This fix is for NVIDIA users.
This issues occurs in GeDoSaTo when no AA is used.
