Command & Conquer (2013) was a cancelled singleplayer and multiplayer bird's-eye view RTS game in the Command & Conquer series. It was being developed by Victory Games and published by Electronic Arts.
The game was initially announced on December 10, 2011 as Command & Conquer: Generals 2, a singleplayer and multiplayer (competitive and co-op) game on the Frostbite 2 engine, which would allow detailed units and dynamic physics (like destruction) to be used in-game.[1][2][3] It was planned to feature a fully fledged campaign and have post-launch DLC released in the form of extra maps, units, factions, campaigns and more.[3] On August 15, 2012, the game was announced to have become a free-to-play live service for multiple future Command & Conquer titles named simply Command & Conquer, with the Generals 2 title being completely dropped. The Generals universe themed content would get released first with Tiberium and Red Alert to follow later.[4][5] In May 2013, it was announced that the game would switch from Frostbite 2 to Frostbite 3 engine.[6]
Despite the initial announcement that the game would be multiplayer-only after this shift, post-launch singleplayer campaign DLC levels were announced on August 20, 2013 that would release episodically.[7][8][9]. The story of these campaign missions would have revolved around the China dominated Asia-Pacific Alliance (APA) having to undermine the upstart European Union (EU), finding out the truth about the newly reconstituted terrorist organization Global Liberation Army (GLA, returns from Command & Conquer: Generals) and restore peace around the globe.[7]
The game entered a multiplayer-only closed alpha in mid-2013 via EA's Origin service exclusively, with priority given to community leaders and customers of the 2012 compilation Command & Conquer: The Ultimate Collection, which included early access to a key that granted access to the closed alpha.[10] The game was planned to to go into closed beta on November 25, 2013 and subsequently release on February 24, 2014.[11][12].
The game was cancelled on October 29, 2013 and the game's developer Victory Games was closed down.[13] EA claimed the game's cancellation was due to negative feedback received during close alpha testing.[14] However, developers claimed this was due to internal corporate politics and shenanigans regarding Electronic Arts.[15][16]. On the day of cancellation, a significant update for the game was set to release, which would have added a new general, a new unit, overhauled perks system, Onslaught mode (co-op mode with two players against AI controlled waves of enemies), games starting with a Command Center and Supply Center by default and more.[17][18][19][20] Approximately a month after cancellation, the servers were shut down, which the game depended on to function, making the game unplayable.[21]
