Essential improvements
Sonic GMI
SonicGMI is the only mod loader for Sonic Generations and is required by all mods. Even if you plan to only play the base game, SonicGMI also includes other important features like a ring limit removal (allowing the collection of over 100 rings in a level) and the FxPipeline Renderer (based on the one found in Sonic Unleashed) that provides graphical and stability improvements to the game. You can download it here.
Unleashed Project Mod
The Unleashed Project Mod comes with Sonic Unleashed day stages ported from the Xbox 360 version with many graphical and minor gameplay improvements, as well as its own hub world.
High Resolution Shadows
- Only for the shadows cast by dynamic objects, not those that are baked into the levels themselves
- Impacts performance, only for high end PCs
There's a way to go beyond the shadow resolution options offered by the game, and it involves some manual modifications to the executable. Step-by-step instructions can be found here.
Quick step sound fix
The sound effect of Modern Sonic's quick step is bugged and doesn't play. There are two ways to get around this:
1. Load a classic stage first (does not need to be completed), then play any modern stage
2. Download the fix mod here (made by Skyth, xan1242, and Mario Tainaka) and place it in higher priority than other sound mods. NOTE: This mod is not compatible with any mods that change/add an intro video, meaning the Unleashed Project. Fortunately, a fix is right here (made by Kagenoki). Merge it with your Unleashed Project's mod folder. This fix may also work with other mods that change/add intros.

- Download and install the Microsoft .NET Framework 4.
- NOTE: If the above doesn't, please run Windows Update and install ALL Updates available. This way you can make sure it's not a "flaw" in your system that's causing the problem.
