Sonic Team is a Japanese video game developer housed within Sega's Division 2 department.
The developer team behind Sonic the Hedgehog takes on the Sonic Team name when the game was released on June 23, 1991. The team was later disbanded and members were went their separate ways, but were later joined Sega Consumer Research and Development Dept. 3 (Sega CS3 for short. Not to be confused with another Sega studio.) that was established by Sega in April 1996, headed by programmer Yuji Naka (the programmer behind the Sonic the Hedgehog games). In May 1999, CS3 was renamed to Sega Software R&D Dept. 8 (Sega R&D No. 8 for short).
The restructure within Sega on April 21, 2000 saw Sega R&D No. 8 spun off and became Sonic Team Ltd., a subsidiary company. The company was later re-integrated into Sega as Sega Global Entertainment R&D Dept. 1 (Sega GE1 for short) following a merger between Sega and Sammy Corporation that formed Sega Sammy Holdings in 2004, though the Sonic Team name is still used to this day. Sonic Team would have its internal division name changed twice, renamed to Sega CS2 in 2008 and to Divison 2 in 2018.
