Sonic Frontiers is a singleplayer third-person action platform game developed by Sonic Team and published by Sega. It is the first entry in the Sonic the Hedgehog series to include open world elements by allowing travel across several open-ended islands, as well as being the first to include a dedicated combat system since Sonic Unleashed, though it still includes linear gameplay closer to more recent entries in the series through its Cyber Space levels.

The game was first released on Steam on November 8, 2022.

The game has planned free updates throughout 2023 that will add new modes and features, as well as additional playable characters and a new storyline.[1] Frontiers' modding scene is active, and HedgeModManager, which is used for all other Hedgehog Engine games on PC, serves as the main way to install and update mods easily and tweak the game further.

Notes

This may cause some animations to be out of sync with the audio.
This code is still experimental.
As of 2022.12.16 these bugs are still active:
  • In the titan fight on the second island, the last QTE button prompt does not appear, softlocking the game.
  • In the second "island mystery" on the third island, the ball physics are affected. The ball occasionally sticks in place, making it harder to collect red rings and to reach the exit gate.
  • Physics for some island challenges that involve putting balls through hoops are affected, resulting in the ball not reaching the hoop before it despawns.
  • Cyberspace level 4-3 is not playable due to Sonic's launch at the start not registering above 60 FPS, resulting in a constant falling death loop.

Tested by playing the game at several resolutions, including 1920x1080, 1280x720, and 3840x2160. While the game properly rendered at these resolutions, the UI didn't scale past 1080p, looking jagged and blurry at higher resolutions.
  7. Verified by User:MasterBlaster on 2022-11-09
Tested by taking several screenshots in the same spot on the overworld at an angle with several AF sample rates and comparing them. The game does not appear to use any form of AF, as forcing AF through the Nvidia Control Panel produced sharper and cleaner results to texture quality.
