Issues fixed

Running the game on modern Windows operating systems

Add a registry entry.[2]
  1. Open the registry editor and navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Wow6432Node\
  2. Inside the Wow6432Node registry key, create a new registry key named Interplay
  3. Inside the Interplay registry key, create a new registry key named StarTrekNewWorlds
  4. Inside the StarTrekNewWorlds registry key, create a new registry key named 1.0.0
  5. Inside the 1.0.0 registry key, create a new String value named CDRom
  6. Edit the CDRom string value to the drive letter of your optical disc drive. (Example: D:\)

The game crashes when starting a scenario

Possible issue with file systems or other drive settings.[citation needed]
  1. For some system setups, the game may not run properly from drives formatted with a file system other than FAT32.
  2. This may be bypassed by copying the game files to another drive, such as a USB drive, which has been formatted with the FAT32 file system and running the game from there.

Runtime error when starting game

Use a ddraw wrapper from an old version of WineD3D for Windows.[1]
  1. Go to the WineD3D archive page and download WineD3D version 1.7.52.
  2. Extract the files ddraw.dll, libwine.dll, and wined3d.dll from the archive to <path-to-game>

Notes

The files from WineD3D version 3.9 may work with certain processor and GPU combinations.

Unable to install game on 64-bit Windows due to 16-bit installer being unsupported

Manually extract the game data.[3]
  1. Go to the Universal Extractor page and download the Universal Extractor.
  2. Using the Universal Extractor, extract the files from DATA1.CAB to a chosen location. This location will become the <path-to-game>.
  3. Follow Running The Game On Modern Windows Operating Systems to create the registry keys required to run the game.
  4. Follow Runtime Error When Starting Game to wrap DirectDraw for use on modern Windows operating systems.

Notes

This does not bypass copy protection; the game will still check for a disc and will refuse to run if the disc is not found.
