Ultra-widescreen

Use the Outer Wilds resolutions unlocker[5]
  1. Download the patcher.
  2. Use it to modify <path-to-game>\OuterWilds_Data\globalgamemanagers
Unlocks the 21:9 aspect ratio, all applicable and other resolutions, including 2560x1080, 3840x1080, 5120x2160 and 5760x1080.
Results in Hor+ FOV and no pillarboxing at most of the resolutions.
5760x1080 is somewhat pillarboxed, and the settings menus are impossible to navigate.
Some of the Input settings elements will overlap. Temporarily switching back to 1920x1080 allows to modify them.
Enable wider screen support by adding 3840x2160 as a custom resolution.[6]
This results in Hor+ FOV at 2560x1080, 3440x1440 and 3840x1080. 5120x2160 and 5760x1080 will be pillarboxed.
Some of the Input settings elements will overlap. Temporarily switching back to 1920x1080 allows to modify them.

For Nvidia users:

  1. Go to the NVIDIA Control Panel by right-clicking the desktop wallpaper and selecting it, or by other means.
  2. On the sidebar, under Display, select Change resolution.
  3. Click on Customize...
  4. Click on Create Custom Resolution...
  5. Enter 3840, 2160 and 60 as Horizontal pixels, Vertical lines and Refresh rate respectively.
  6. Click on Test, choosing Yes at the prompt.
  7. Close the panel without actually selecting the new resolution.
  8. Launch the game and select 3840x2160 under 16:9 if necessary.

For AMD Radeon users:

  1. Go to the AMD Radeon Settings by right-clicking the desktop wallpaper and selecting the option, or by other means.
  2. Click on the Display tab.
  3. Click on Create next to Custom Resolutions, selecting the desired display.
  4. Enter 3840, 2160 and 60 as Horizontal, Vertical resolutions and Refresh Rate respectively.
  5. Click on Save.
  6. Switch back to the native monitor resolution if changed.
  7. Launch the game and select 3840x2160 under 16:9 if necessary.

Exclusive fullscreen

Use the -window-mode exclusive command line argument.
Always fills the screen, preventing the custom resolution workaround for wider resolutions from working.[2]

High frame rate

Raise frame rate cap[citation needed]
  1. Go to %USERPROFILE%\AppData\LocalLow\Mobius Digital\Outer Wilds\
  2. Create a new file called secretsettings.txt.
  3. Open it and add the line PhysicsRate=120 where 120 is the desired frame rate.
This changes the rate at which physics calculations are performed, which has a strong impact on performance.

Notes

  1. Unity engine build: 2017.4.33f1
  2. 2.0 2.1 Notes regarding Steam Play (Linux) data:
  3. The contents of one of the game files, and the game engine being Unity suggest that anisotropic textures are enabled by default. Nevertheless, they are not part of the visible graphics settings.[2]
