Convert Steam save games to Epic Games Store version

Instructions
You will need to replace the first 5 hexadecimal values in the contents of the file from one version with those of the other version.
  1. Open your save file (.sav) in your hex editor (e.g. HxD).
  2. The file will start with 6C 1B 05 00 18.
  3. Replace those 5 bytes with 98 01 05 00 17, by highlighting the aforementioned 6C 1B 05 00 18 and pasting 98 01 05 00 17 over them.
  4. Save the file, with the contents now starting with 98 01 05 00 17, and transfer it to the save folder as documented above.

Convert Epic Games Store save games to Steam version

Instructions
The process is the exact same as the described above, but in the opposite direction.
  1. Open your save file (.sav) in your hex editor (e.g. HxD).
  2. The file will start with 98 01 05 00 17.
  3. Replace those 5 bytes with 6C 1B 05 00 18, by highlighting the aforementioned 98 01 05 00 17 and pasting 6C 1B 05 00 18 over them.
  4. Save the file, with the contents now starting with 6C 1B 05 00 18, and transfer it to the save folder as documented above.

General conversion between any 2 versions of save games

Instructions
This method involves using a PowerShell script to replace the first 5 hexadecimal values of save files. It requires obtaining a valid save file from the target version by playing the game and saving at least once.
  1. First, create a valid save for your current game version:
    1. Open the game on the target version (e.g., Steam or Epic Games Launcher).
    2. Play the game and save at least once to generate a valid save file (.sav).
    3. Locate the valid save file in the save folder.
  2. Now, identify the first 5 Hex values of the valid save file generated:
    1. Open the valid save file in a hex editor.
    2. Take note of the first 5 hexadecimal values (e.g., 98 01 05 00 17).
  3. Finally and like in the methods described before, update each of the game saves you want to convert:
    1. By opening them, one by one, in a hex editor.
    2. Replacing their first 5 hexadecimal values with those of the valid save file and saving after.
    3. Transfering them all to the save folder as documented above.

(Alternative method) This process (which can be cumbersome, in the case of many save files) can be automated using a PowerShell Script.

On Windows, open a Powershell terminal and paste the following code after adequately replacing "C:\Path\To\Your\Folder" with folder path where the saves to convert are located and "C:\Path\To\Your\ReferenceSave.sav" with the path to valid save file previously generated:

You can also directly feed the script with the hexadecimal values (e.g. 98 01 05 00 17, instead, by changing the fourth code line into something like $referenceHexValues = [byte[]](0x98, 0x01, 0x05, 0x00, 0x17) and deleting the two previous code lines about specifying the filepath and reading the content of the generated valid save.

(Optional step, after conversion) Copy over the original timestamps of the game saves

Instructions
Since the game uses the "Modified Date" timestamp of the actual files to display the in-game date of the game saves, (in the "Load saves" menu), after applying the methods described above you will have modified and saved said files and therefore will be left with all your saves, in game, showing up as having been created at your present date (or the date when you followed this procedure).

To fix that, on Windows, you can either:

  • Manually edit each file with the desired date with a program like BulkFileChanger.
  • Or use a Powershell script that takes, as input, the path to the folder with the original game saves ("C:\Path\To\Folder1_original") and the folder with the modified game saves ("C:\Path\To\Folder2_modified") and copies all respective timestamps from each file of the former to the file of the same name in the latter:

  1. Go to the configuration file(s) location.
  2. Open DishonoredInput.ini.
  3. Go down to the line m_PCBindings=(Name="Zero",Command="GBA_Shortcut_9")
  4. Add a new line below it: m_PCBindings=(Name="F4",Command="FOV 120")
  5. Change 120 to the FOV you want and save your changes.
  6. Press F4 during gameplay to use the new FOV.

Notes

This method will break the zoom-in during cutscenes. Your FOV will not change.

Anisotropic filtering (AF)

High frame rate

You can also set bSmoothFrameRate to FALSE to unlock FPS completely, but it can cause glitches and prevent progression.
Issues with not registering certain inputs and/or being stuck in certain places/objects start at around 158-159 FPS.
Issues with certain cutscenes not progressing start at around 149-150 FPS.
Lock your framerate at or below 148 to avoid issues.

  2. Go to <path-to-game>\DishonoredGame\Localization\.
  3. Copy language-code folder to %USERPROFILE%\Documents\My Games\Dishonored\DishonoredGame\Localization\.
  4. Go to <path-to-game>\Engine\Localization\.

The game forces you to pick either keyboard/mouse or controller when you first open the main menu. Everything works fine with keyboard and mouse; however, with a controller, while the settings can be changed, they will never be saved and the game will reload the default settings every time a save file is loaded.

"High Overseer Campbell" meeting chamber bug

Opening the gate behind Overseer Martin during the "High Overseer Campbell" mission will trigger a bug with the main objective: High Overseer Campbell and Captain Curnow cut off their conversation too early, and everyone in the waiting area becomes alerted and rushes into the meeting chamber. The mission can still be completed, but several ways of solving the main objective are automatically failed.[22][23]
Avoid opening the bugged gate[22][23]

Complete the meeting chamber portion of the mission without opening the gate behind Overseer Martin (use climbing, Blink, or other methods to get inside without opening this particular gate).

"Creating a Safe Haven" side objective doesn't complete

After escorting the survivors past the Threat Zone, the game may still not give credit for the objective's completion. In order to successfully complete the quest, the player may need to perform the following action.
Place weeper corpse in the safe zone[24][25]

Return to the apartments and pick up a weeper corpse. Place this corpse in the safe zone with the other survivors.

After the objective is completed, do not turn on the nearby floodlights. Even though the survivors are no longer in the apartments, the objective will fail automatically when the tallboys begin to attack the apartments.[26]
