Version differences
- RAGE: Campaign Edition is OS X release of the game, it includes the Anarchy Edition and Wasteland Sewer Missions DLC. Multiplayer is not included.
Essential improvements
Restore cache files
- The texture cache folder is not made by the game, so you need to create it manually.
- This can fix stuttering in the game.
Make texture cache folder.
|
- Go to
%LOCALAPPDATA% and make a folder named id Software (If it's not already there.)
- Go into that folder and make a folder named
Rage
- The game will now correctly store the texture cache between sessions.
Notes
- The game creates two files there, one of which is 1 GB in size. This file is not deleted after ending or uninstalling the game and has to be deleted manually.
- Normal Windows shortcuts do not work to relocate the
id Software folder or the Rage folder to another drive. You can run the game with the startup command +fs_cachepath "x:\cache" to manually specify the location of the cache (it can't be executed from console). Create the folder before changing the path.
- Slow HDD can prevent from achieving high FPS. Consider placing the cache on RAM disk (e.g. with free RadeonRAMDisk) or SSD (even whole game).

Skip intro videos
Enable developer console
Enable console in shortcut[citation needed]
|
- Set
+set com_allowConsole 1 command line argument
- Now you can access the developer console in-game with ~.
Notes
- The console has less options than it did at release.[citation needed]
- The console won't work if you do not have ~ on your keyboard. Switching to another keyboard layout in the Windows language settings solves this.
|
Unlock Anarchy Edition DLC
- Available as a pre-order bonus or as part of the Campaign Edition, it can also be unlocked manually
Create files[1]
|
- Go to
<path-to-game>\dlc\
- Create dlc1 folder
- Copy
info.txt from dlc2 folder to dlc1
- Open
info.txt in dlc1 folder
- Change
"dlcID" "2" to "dlcID" "1"
- Save the file
- If this doesn't work for you, then try the method below
|
Use in-game console commands[1]
|
- Enable the developer console.
- To unlock all the content, enter the following into the in-game console:
give inventory/spdatacollection/dlc_day1
- The command also unlocks the Wasteland Sewer Missions DLC
- (Alternate) To unlock specific content, enter in any of the following into the in-game console:
give inventory/keys/ratrod (Rat Rod Buggy)
give weaponupgrades/brassknuckles (Fists of RAGE)
give weapon/doublebarrelshotgun (Double Barrel Shotgun)
give playerarmor/adventurer (Crimson Elite Armor)
Notes
- If done correctly, achievements will not be disabled
- The weapons can only be acquired after starting the Quell the Bandit Threat quest
- The Crimson Elite Armor can only be acquired after completing the Changing Clothes quest. Use the console command afterwards to replace the currently equipped armor

CUDA Transcode Improved Performance
Rage uses very highly compressed texture data as part of its MegaTexture technology engine.[2] Users with a fast Nvidia video card can benefit from CUDA transcoding which will offload the decompressing task to the video card rather than the CPU. Users with 4 or more processor cores instead can benefit from extra CPU transcoding by disabling this feature and thus giving all available video card time to rendering the game.
Game data
Configuration file(s) location
Save game data location
- Saves for the 64-bit executable are stored in
<path-to-game>\SAVES\base\savegame\
- Save game data location can be changed via
+fs_savepath
launch option
- The texture cache (
fs_cachepath
) is stored in %LOCALAPPDATA%\id Software\Rage\
- Game has 14 manual save slots + 1 autosave slot.
Switch 32 and 64 bit savegames
Play 64bit saves into 32 bit version and viceversa[3]
|
- Make sure you have an auto-save made with the version of your source savegame
- Go to the folder where that version creates the savegames (see above)
- Copy
GAMES-AUTOSAVE from there, to the other version's save files folder
- Start this last version and load the autosave (for safety, avoid using the continue campaign button.)
|
Video
- Single player and multiplayer FOV settings must be set separately.
Add launch options (single player mode)[citation needed]
|
- In your Steam Library right click on game and select
Properties
- Choose Set launch options.
- Add
+g_fov xx where xx is your desired FOV.
|
Set FOV in default.cfg (multiplayer mode)[citation needed]
|
- Go to
<path-to-game>\mp\base\
- Edit
default.cfg in a text editor.
- At the top of this file, add the line
g_fov xx where xx is your desired FOV.

Issues unresolved
Regular crashes with ATI/AMD desktop and mobile graphics
- Running RAGE on some systems will cause regular crashes, and this issue remains unfixed.[10]
- Using third-party drivers does not fix the issue.[11]
- Only seems to happen on the 32-bit version.
Force RAGE to use older version of AMD OpenGL driver (atioglxx.dll)[citation needed]
|
- Fortunately, the game does not require installation of older drivers in the system. Placing correct version of
atioglxx.dll in game directory will do the job - the game will use it instead of using the one installed in the system. This solution is 'trial and error method' friendly.
- This solution was confirmed while testing on Windows 7 x64 with the use of following GPUs: Radeon HD6650M, Radeon HD7850, Radeon HD7870, Radeon R9 290x. May be compatible with other GPUs and OS versions as well. Further testing required.
- Download
atioglxx.dll file version '6.14.10.12002' directly from pcgamingwiki or extract it manually from official driver package that can be downloaded from AMD drivers page.
- Copy
atioglxx.dll to the installation folder.
- Start the game.
Notes
-
atioglxx.dll version recommended in this solution is '6.14.10.12002' and is a part of AMD Catalyst 13.1 WHQL package. Although, it is not inconceivable that you will need to find a different version for your system or GPU. Both, 32 and 64-bit Catalyst 13.1 package versions contain the same atioglxx.dll file. Byte-to-byte comparison showed no differences between the files.
- This only works if you installed the game to the C drive.
- This fix can also make the game silent until load via changing map or loading a save.
|
Issues fixed
Audio desynchronization issue
- If Texture detail setting is:
- ON: Overall texture quality is getting a slighly better, but an audio issue causes audio to cut out, or not play at all. Dialogue will be cut short, footsteps will not be in sync or even cut out completely, and vehicle sounds fails to play correctly.
- OFF: Overall texture quality is getting a slighly lower, but it solves all the problems described above.
Set Texture detail to OFF
|
- Open in-game video settings.
- Turn Texture detail to OFF.
|
Low frame rate in 32-bit version, even at main menu.
Disable GVR in AMD Gaming Evolved[citation needed]
|
- Close the application or disable GVR in-game by clicking Page Up+F11
|
64-bit version takes too long to load.
Corrupted, black, jagged or dotted textures
Ensure that graphics card does not override anti-aliasing preferences.
|
- Check the graphics driver's control panel or any utility which could control the graphics card may override the game's anti-aliasing or anisotropic filtering setting
- These include but are not limited to program such as:
- Catalyst Control Center, RadeonPro and ATI Tray tools for ATI/AMD GPUs
- Nvidia Control panel, Nvidia Profile Inspector for Nvidia GPU
- RivaTuner, etc.
|
Enable in-game anti-aliasing.[12]
|
- May not be ideal for lower-end systems as it can have major impact on performance, even at 2x.
|
Stutter, textures pop-in, freezes
Create textures cache folder[13]
|
- Just create the textures cache folder. The game then will be able to use it to improve disk streaming performance
|
Increase texture buffer[14]
|
- Set
+fc maxcachememoryMB 1024 +vt_maxPPF "16" +vt_pageimagesizevmtr 16384 +vt_pageImageSizeUnique 16384 +vt_pageImageSizeUniqueDiffuseOnly 16384 +vt_pageImageSizeUniqueDiffuseOnly2 16384 command line argument.
Notes
- This works only if you have 3 GB VRAM and should fix pop in even when you do a 180° turn.
|
Minifreezes[citation needed]
|
- If the game freezes for about 1 two 2 seconds in regular intervals, add
+jobs_numThreads 0 to the launch options.
|
Reduce menu mouse sensitivity.
|
- Add
+cvaradd m_menu_sensitivity 0.20 as command line argument. Increase or decrease the value if necessary.
|
No mouse support at all
Launch the 64-bit with mods version instead of 32-bit[15]
