− | | + | {{Introduction |
− | {{ | + | |introduction = PAGENAME is a and game developed and published by Sega, while the 2016 Sega Mega Drive & Genesis Hub was developed by D3T using the Unity engine. It is a compilation of emulated Sega Mega Drive/Genesis games. |
− | + | ||
− | + | |release history = The original set of games, Sega Mega Drive Classic Collection, was first released for Windows in a series of five volumes that ran between June 1, 2010 through May 2, 2012 with total of over 50 titles from the Sega Mega Drive and Genesis library. The first four volumes were later re-released for retail as Sega Genesis Classics: Gold Edition in 2011. These compilations offers optional smoothing and scanline filters, keyboard and controller remapping options, and quick saving. It is referred to as the "Simple Launcher" in the Steam version. | |
− | + | ||
+ | An updated version of this collection, Sega Mega Drive & Genesis Classics Hub, was released for Windows, MacOS, and Linux through Steam on April 28, 2016. It uses the Unity engine to provide a virtual 1990's room interface that, in addition to the features of the previous compilations, offers more graphical and emulation settings, save states, fast-forwarding and rewinding, different regional versions of certain games, online multiplayer for applicable games, leaderboards, and uncompressed ROMs that can be used with external emulators. It is referred to as the "Game Hub" in the Steam version. Exclusive to the Steam and PlayStation 4 version of this collection is the ability to use VR. As of April 28, 2016, the Steam version of this collection features Steam Workshop support, allowing users to submit mods (i.e. ROM hacks) for each game. Unfortunately, the Steam Workshop for this collection has became flooded with pirated ROMs (including games found in other compilations being sold through Steam or other platforms) and pornographic content disguised as mods due to lack of moderation of submitted content. 100% Steam Achievement completion in this collection has also became impossible without Sonic the Hedgehog, Sonic the Hedgehog 2, and Sonic 3 & Knuckles which were delisted on May 20, 2022 to be included in Sonic Origins. | ||
+ | |||
+ | |current state = The "Simple Launcher" has a problem with not saving settings when setting the Fullscreen mode resolution higher than 2560x1440 on certain displays, causing settings to reset when attempting to play games in 4K. It also does not allow players to disable the second player's controller regardless of using keyboard or controllers, which affects Alien Storm due to certain modes being locked out with the second controller connected. The "Game Hub" cannot save progress when using modded versions of the games through the Steam Workshop. Although the Steam version of Sega Mega Drive & Genesis Classics offers the ability to play certain ROMs from different regions, most of them are unavailable in uncompressed format in the uncompressed ROMs folder and must be extracted from the *.pak files by using QuickBMS . It is also possible to replace the stock ROMs stored inside the *.pak files used by the Steam version of Sega Mega Drive & Genesis Classics with modified ones or add new games for the "Simple Launcher" by using PscdPack. | ||

Sega Mega Drive and Genesis Classics is a singleplayer and multiplayer game developed and published by Sega, while the 2016 Sega Mega Drive & Genesis Hub was developed by D3T using the Unity engine. It is a compilation of emulated Sega Mega Drive/Genesis games.
The original set of games, Sega Mega Drive Classic Collection, was first released for Windows in a series of five volumes that ran between June 1, 2010 through May 2, 2012 with total of over 50 titles from the Sega Mega Drive and Genesis library. The first four volumes were later re-released for retail as Sega Genesis Classics: Gold Edition in 2011. These compilations offers optional smoothing and scanline filters, keyboard and controller remapping options, and quick saving. It is referred to as the "Simple Launcher" in the Steam version.
An updated version of this collection, Sega Mega Drive & Genesis Classics Hub, was released for Windows, MacOS, and Linux through Steam on April 28, 2016. ROM hacks) for each game.[3] Unfortunately, the Steam Workshop for this collection has became flooded with pirated ROMs (including games found in other compilations being sold through Steam or other platforms) and pornographic content disguised as mods due to lack of moderation of submitted content.[4] 100% Steam Achievement completion in this collection has also became impossible without Sonic the Hedgehog, Sonic the Hedgehog 2, and Sonic 3 & Knuckles which were delisted on May 20, 2022 to be included in Sonic Origins.
The "Simple Launcher" has a problem with not saving settings when setting the Fullscreen mode resolution higher than 2560x1440 on certain displays, causing settings to reset when attempting to play games in 4K. It also does not allow players to disable the second player's controller regardless of using keyboard or controllers, which affects Alien Storm due to certain modes being locked out with the second controller connected. The "Game Hub" cannot save progress when using modded versions of the games through the Steam Workshop.[5] Although the Steam version of Sega Mega Drive & Genesis Classics offers the ability to play certain ROMs from different regions, most of them are unavailable in uncompressed format in the uncompressed ROMs
folder and must be extracted from the *.pak
files by using QuickBMS . It is also possible to replace the stock ROMs stored inside the *.pak
files used by the Steam version of Sega Mega Drive & Genesis Classics with modified ones or add new games for the "Simple Launcher" by using PscdPack.

Issues unresolved
Unable to disable Player 2 controller
- The input settings should contain a checkbox to disable a controller for the "Simple Launcher", but the checkbox may not appear (shown here). The "Game Hub" version always have a second controller connected regardless if a physical controller is connected to the computer or not. The inability to disable the controller affects Alien Storm as the second controller must be disabled to access one of the game modes.
Issues fixed
Run the game at screen refresh rate
- 2011 Gold Edition forces 60Hz refresh rate even if the monitor supports higher than that.
Override refresh rate set by game[15] |
---|
|
Blank full-screen mode (Linux)
- Playing games in full-screen mode in the Linux version of the SEGA Game Room does not work with AMD Mesa drivers.[16]
Run the Windows version with Proton |
---|
In the Compatibility tab of the game's Properties window in Steam, enable the "Force the use of a specific Steam Play compatibility tool" option and select Proton 6.3-8 or newer from the drop-down list. |
Green splotches on human characters in Sword of Vermilion
- The game was designed for older CRT TVs. On modern displays, human characters in the game appear to have green splotches on their skin.[17]
Workaround: RetroArch CRT Render filter |
---|
Notes:
|
Game crashes on start
- The game crashes on start. The game writes an error.log file showing the message "UnityPlayer.dll caused an Access Violation". This can be caused by a bug in the Unity framework conflicting with Citrix Workspace App. A workaround is available via uninstalling Citrix Workspace App and re-installing with some installation parameters that avoid this conflict.
Instructions[18] |

Cannot save progress with mods ("Game Hub" version)
- Playing modded versions of games subscribed through Steam Workshop in the "Game Hub" does not save progress for games that uses backup save data. The only workaround is to use PscdPack to make a new
*.pak
with the modified ROM for the "Simple Launcher" or replace the stock*.pak
used by the "Game Hub". See these instructions for details.[19]

Run mods or adding new games in the Simple Launcher
- ROMs in
*.md
,*.sgd
, and*.68k
format must be converted to*.bin
due the save data format used by Sega Mega Drive & Genesis Classics. - Steam Workshop mods can also be played in the "Game Hub" version with working save data functionality by replacing the stock
*.pak
files found in<path-to-game>\data
folder with their modded versions. Backing up the original*.pak
files is recommended.
Use PscdPack to modify or create custom *.pak files[21]

- Tested the individual retail European volume releases as well as the North American "Gold Edition" collection in an isolated environment with Sandboxie Plus, all of them attempts to install StarForce drivers on the computer when launching these games directly from their respective executables after extracting the installation files off the disc rather than running the installer. PscdPack also could not access the embedded ROMs of the *.pak files of the retail releases of these collections due to the encryption method being used and using the DRM-free executable from the Steam version returns an error about the data files were not installed correctly despite being in their proper places and using the compilations' *.pak naming convention.

- Attempting to select 3840x2160 from the Simple launcher's fullscreen resolution options and the emulator refuses to save settings. I've attempted to use aspect-ratio correction, disabled filter, windowed mode, and selected the Xbox One controller as the input device while fullscreen resolution is set to 3840x2160, but the Simple launcher always seem to reset settings every time if a 4K resolution is selected. Resolutions below 4K such as 2160x1440 however appear to work fine.)

- The "Game Hub" version appears to have a problem with Mayflash's Magic NS2 Bluetooth dongle, which converts compatible controllers to Xbox 360 controllers in XInput mode, but for some reason the menus does not work and the controls were not configured. After configurating the controls with the Magic NS2 dongle, menu controls in the room interface still did not work but does in-game. The interface of the "Simple Launcher" was able to register my Xbox Series controller outside of the Options menus and needing to quit a game after configuring the controller.

- An Xbox Series controller paired with a Mayflash Magic NS2 dongle did not register any inputs in the menus even after mapping the controls from the in-game options, but during gameplay it registers gameplay inputs yet I couldn't not back out to the frontend without a keyboard. Also tested a Switch Pro Controller in Bluetooth mode and none of the inputs registers, not even when trying to configure the controls.

- The Sonic 3 Complete mod downloaded from the Steam Workshop for Sonic 3 & Knuckles did not save my game's progress and its save data reset after shutting the game down. I turned to replacing the g0042.pak's default Sonic 3 & Knuckles ROM with the local Sonic 3 Complete ROM imported from the Steam Workshop, ran the game again without enabling mods from the game selection menu, and not only Sonic 3 Complete appeared instead of the vanilla Sonic 3 & Knuckles, save data also works as intended in the "Game Hub" version.
