Warnings

The Mac OS X version of this game does not work on Mac OS X Lion (version 10.7) or later due to the removal of support for PowerPC apps.

Red Faction is a singleplayer and multiplayer first-person FPS game in the Red Faction series.

The game suffers from severe bugs and compatibility issues in both singleplayer and multiplayer, especially on modern systems. The Dash Faction community modernization patch is therefore highly recommended as it fixes a majority of the issues and introduces several improvements and enhancements to the game.

The Red Faction Collection retail release contains a redeemable Steam key instead of a full retail installation of the game.

Digital

Digital distributions are pre-patched with v1.21.

All English digital distributions are identical, aside from the Steam version having Steam DRM.

The German GOG.com version has several notable differences from all other digital and retail versions:

• It includes levelspf.vpp, which contains 6 community-made multiplayer maps originally distributed in the Pure Faction patch.
  • The included maps are: Use and Abuse v2.1, Pipe Dream, Waste Recycling Plant, Village, Fortress, and Malachi.
• Instead of utilizing the built-in and supported method of localizing files, it overwrites the English versions of core game files with German versions of the same files. This can cause compatibility issues when trying to use custom maps/mods.
• It contains a modified tables.vpp file, which makes the game's multiplayer component incompatible with every other available version of the game. To fix this, download the original tables.vpp file, and replace the existing copy in <path-to-game>. You can then install the German translation pack to restore the German localization.

Demos

Three demos were released for the game:

• Red Faction Worldwide Demo (Both singleplayer and multiplayer)

All demos suffer from the same functional issues as the base game, however no patches are available to resolve them.

Patches

Digital versions are pre-patched to v1.21, fixing some minor compatibility and security issues, while introducing some new bugs.

The latest official patch for retail versions is v1.20:

• Windows: English, German and French.
• Mac OS/OS X.

Dash Faction

Open-source patch/launcher for Red Faction (Windows) that fixes numerous bugs and security vulnerabilities, improves performance and compatibility with modern systems, offers video and graphical quality enhancements, autosaves after each level transition, and many other enhancements/usability improvements over the base game.

Only directly compatible with the North American Red Faction v1.20 executable. If the game version is v1.00 or v1.10, the installer will automatically apply the latest retail patch (v1.20). For digital and non-North American versions, the installer will automatically create a new game executable RF_120na.exe that is fully compatible with the launcher.

Use the -game command line argument to DashFactionLauncher.exe to launch the game immediately without displaying the launcher window.

Use the automated setup

Download the installer from GitHub or dashfaction.com and run it. Click on Next until the Select RF.exe location screen appears. Enter the location of RF.exe in <path-to-game>. If a prompt appears stating that the "Detected Red Faction version is not directly supported by Dash Faction", click OK. The appropriate patches will automatically be applied to your installation to make it compatible. Click Next a few times. At the Select Additional Tasks window, change default settings if desired. Steam users need to select the Replace the Red Faction launcher with the Dash Faction launcher option to allow Dash Faction to be launched via Steam, make the Steam overlay available, and allow Steam to track time spent playing Dash Faction. Click Install. Click Finish. The launcher will open, go to the Options menu to adjust settings where desired. Launch the game from now on by opening DashFactionLauncher.exe and clicking on Launch Game in the Dash Faction launcher.

Install it manually

Compared to the automated setup, the manual install method does not include the rf://IP:PORT protocol handler that allows you to click a link to join multiplayer games directly. Download the Dash Faction ZIP archive. Extract the archive to any folder desired, doesn't have to be the Red Faction installation folder. Run DashFactionLauncher.exe. Open the Options window in the Dash Faction launcher. Adjust settings from recommended defaults if desired, but make sure to set Game executable to <path-to-game>\rf.exe. Close Options menu. Click Launch Game to launch the game with all enhancements the patch offers. If a prompt appears stating "Unsupported game executable has been detected", do the following: If you're using a retail (disc) copy of Red Faction, first install the v1.20 patch and try launching again. If you're using a digital distribution of Red Faction (or a retail version but you've already installed v1.20 and are still getting this prompt), download the Red Faction v1.20 NA executable archive. Extract the executable from the downloaded archive. Move it to <path-to-game> and replace the existing RF.exe. For Steam version: use the <path-to-DashFaction-executable> %command% command line argument in the Steam launch option for the game to launch the Dash Faction launcher automatically instead of the Red Faction launcher when launching the Steam version. Launch the game from now on by first opening DashFactionLauncher.exe and then by clicking on Launch Game in the Dash Faction launcher.

Install Dash Faction. Open the console. Use the fov <value> command to change FOV. Use fpgun_fov_scale <value> to change viewmodel FOV. Note Dash Faction by default automatically scales horizontal FOV for other aspect ratios based on the standard of 90° at 4:3. Use r_togglewidefov to toggle the scaling. Use fov with no value specified to print your current horizontal FOV. Use fov 0 to use the default horizontal FOV for your aspect ratio.

Universal Plug and Play (UPnP) support status can be hacked for this game: Dash Faction installation is required.
