Mafia II: Definitive Edition is a singleplayer third-person action, shooter game in the Mafia series. The game is a remaster of Mafia II which contains graphical upgrades like improved textures, improved shadows, higher resolution ambient occlusion, added HBAO-support, generally improved anti-aliasing (like added MSAA-support), improved facial feature definition, remastered facial animations, reworked post-processing and implemented DX11-support.[2][3] It was remastered by D3T and published by 2K Games.

Mafia II: Definitive Edition was released May 19, 2020 on Steam and later on Epic Games Store on September 25, containing all the DLC from Mafia II. Previous owners of Mafia II on Steam were automatically given this version for free, and the original Mafia II was renamed to Mafia II (Classic) in the Steam Library.

Compared to the original, the game lacks support for Windows 7[4] and Windows XP, although a workaround exists for Windows 7.

  6. It contains various camera views (<Stay>, <Sprint>, <Climb>, etc.), each having their own <Fov value="XX" /> parameter listed under their name.
  7. Change the values of those parameters (most are set at 65 or 75) to the desired FOV for that camera. Don't miss the ones under the <Interier> section also.
  8. Click Save, and switch back to the archive via the Windows menu at the top.
  9. The FOV for the various driving views can be changed in the carCameraBumper, carCameraGamepad (chase cam), carCameraHood, and carCameraWheel files, by editing the same <Fov value="XX" /> parameters. Other cameras (cover system, melee, etc.) have their own file as well.
  10. When all files are saved, switch back to the archive and click Save Archive.
  11. Double-click tables.sds and replace it (or make a backup first before replacing).

Two different languages for Audio and Subtitles

Game doesn't offer the option to have audio and subtitles in two different languages. Useful if one doesn't like the dubbing in their language.
Copy text files from the desired text language to the chosen audio language
  1. In the game's launcher, select the desired language as audio language for voice dubbing, then enable subtitles and close the launcher.
  2. Go into <path-to-game>\pc\sds_[language]\ and copy text_credits and text_default into <path-to-game>\pc\sds_[language].

Issues unresolved

Infinite loading screen in Stairway to Heaven

An infinite loading screen in the chapter Stairway to Heaven might happen after the cutscene where Vito pays back Bruno if he raised money by holding up stores.
Restart chapter[15]
  • Some players have been able to start the following chapter from the main menu but otherwise, the chapter must be restarted from the main menu and the player should raise money by dropping off cars to Bruski.

Notes

This bug is also present in the original version.

FOV changes after loading

Gameplay FOV may change after loading from a checkpoint or restarting the game and loading into a mission.[16]

Bugged cutscenes

Characters close their eyes in cutscenes when their eyes are normally suppose to move with some not even moving or blinking at all. Movements are choppier, more robotic and awkward and limbs can clip into the torso of the characters and twist around unnaturally. Cutscenes can even be black with only audio or repeat indefinitely.[citation needed]

Issues fixed

Cloth APEX PhysX fix workaround

APEX PhysX effects work properly except the cloth physics in the main game. APEX PhysX works well in the DLCs and with DLC clothing.
Delete CLOTH folder[17]
  1. Go to the in-game video settings.
  2. Set global settings to "high".
  3. Close the game.
  4. Go to <path-to-game>\EDIT\APEX\.
  5. Back up CLOTH to another directory.
  6. Delete CLOTH in <path-to-game>\EDIT\APEX\.

Notes

APEX PhysX particles + standard cloth physics.
Other video settings can now be changed to the desired values. This will change the preset to "custom". If the preset is changed to "low", it will disable APEX PhysX.
It should be added back when playing the DLCs.

APEX PhysX debris doesn't last as long as in Mafia II: Classic

Copy Effects folder from Classic[18]
  1. Download the Effect folder here.
  2. Extrect the .zip file.
  3. Replace Effect in <path-to-game>\EDIT\APEX with the downloaded one.

Notes

Makes PhysX more demanding.

Flickering fog

Set Vsync to FAST or ADAPTIVE in Nvidia Control Panel[19]

Notes

Nvidia only.

Savegame issues

The path for saves cannot contain non-English characters.
Use SilentPatch to resolve the issue[20]

Resolution list locked to single monitor (Unable to select certain resolutions)

In multiple monitor setups, it's possible that game won't let user to select certain resolutions, because one of devices has lower resolution in comparison to others.
For example, with two monitors: 1st - 5:4(1280x1024) and 2nd one 16:9(1920x1080) <- set as main one, user will not be able to render game above 1280x1024. If resolution is set in config file, and it exceeds 1280x1024 game will render game in 640x480.
Disconnect lowest resolution display

Add Windows 7 Support (Error: xinput1_4.dll missing)

The game was compiled to use most modern xinput1_4.dll, which is not available for Windows 7. However, it's still possible to use earlier version of XInput library as a workaround.
Windows 7 workaround[21]
  1. Navigate to C:\Windows\System32 and copy xinput1_3.dll to a different directory.
  2. Rename newly copied xinput1_3.dll to xinput1_4.dll.
  3. Move newly renamed xinput1_4.dll to <path-to-game>\pc.

Confirmed by using Special K to monitor the swapchain details of the game when launching it on a HDR enabled monitor. The swapchain of the game remains purely in SDR, and so HDR is never engaged by the game.

Started Joe's Adventures and took a screenshot of the first scene past the cutscene, clicked on Load last checkpoint from the menu, which resulted in a significant FOV decrease, persisting even after using the wardrobe, until leaving the building. Restarting the game and clicking Continue resulted in increased FOV at the same starting point. Additionally confirmed by mastan on Discord.
