Essential improvements
Restore cache files
- The texture cache folder is not made by the game so the cache is regenerated for each session.
- This can fix stuttering in the game.
Make texture cache folder[1]
|
- Go to
%LOCALAPPDATA% and make a folder named MachineGames
- Go into that folder and make a folder named
Wolfenstein The Old Blood
- The game will now correctly store the texture cache between sessions.
Notes
- The game creates two files there, one of which is 1 GB in size. This file is not deleted after ending or uninstalling the game and has to be deleted manually.
- Normal Windows shortcuts do not work to relocate the
MachineGames folder or the Wolfenstein The Old Blood folder to another drive.
- Slow HDD can prevent from achieving high FPS. Consider placing the cache on RAM disk (e.g. with free RadeonRAMDisk) or SSD (even whole game).

Skip intro videos
Skip intro videos[2]
|
- Go to
<path-to-game>\base\bink\ingame\oldgame .
- Copy
oldgame_in.bik .
- Go to
<path-to-game>\base\bink\ .
- Paste
oldgame_in.bik .
- Delete or rename
loadvideo_pc_xboxone.bik .
- Rename
oldgame_in.bik to loadvideo_pc_xboxone.bik .
- Simply removing the intro or using an empty bik file with the wrong resolution causes problems.
|
Use +com_skipIntroVideo 1 command line argument
|
- Disables all intros except the ones from Bethesda and Machine Games.

VR support
Issues fixed
Vertical sync disables itself intermittently
Force Vsync and triple buffering[2]
|
- Disable in-game vertical sync.
- Force vertical sync and triple buffering externally. See Force Vsync for instructions.
Notes
- Triple buffering is important for avoiding large fluctuations in frame rate.
|
Mouse thumb buttons not working
- Experiencing this can be a nuisance if you prefer re-binding actions to these buttons, such as binding melee to mouse 5.
Disable any other devices that show in Device Manager under "Mice and other pointing devices."[citation needed]
|
- Right Click the windows start button and click Device Manager
- Look under "Mice and other pointing devices" and try disabling devices other than your main mouse
- Usually any "Gamer" peripherals like the Razer DeathStalker could include mouse functions that prevent some games such as Wolfenstein to not recognize some functions of your main mouse.
Notes
- Depending on which device was interfering that you had to disable, your peripheral may lose some functionality such as macro keys or any keybindings that mimicked mouse functions. However normal keys should still work fine.
|
VirtualTexture compression showing artifacts on textures
- Artifacts on textures appear when you move
Disable VirtualTexture Compression[3]
|
- Go to advanced video settings
- Disable the VirtualTexture Compression option
- The game will no longer show artifacts on textures.
Notes
- In game performance and loading times may suffer greatly. Not advisable for use with GPU transcoding or on a lower end PC. Requires much more VRAM.

FPS issues and drops
Change binary name and create text file[4]
|
Solution presumably for AMD GPUs
- Go to the steam game directory where you have installed the game
- Copy and paste WolfOldBlood_x64 in the game file
- Rename the file to WolfOldBlood_x32 (for New Order, in some cases to x86]
- Create a text document called steam_appid
- In that text documnet type 350080
- Save the text document in the game directory
- Launch the game in WolfOldBlood_x32 not WolfOldBlood_x64
- The game will launch
Notes
- Do not delete the WolfOldBlood_x64 file or else it won't work.
- Make sure that the two launch file are in the game folder, WolfOldBlood_x64 and WolfOldBlood_x32.
|
Set specific level of certain details[5]
|
- Certain details on id Tech 5 causes problems even on recent GPUs (esp. AMD):
- VERTICAL SYNC: OFF (you can try to force it in GPU control panel instead [only if you need it], and then turn on triple buffering in GPU control panel [not always helps]).
- VIRTUAL TEXTURE COMPRESSION: ENABLED (or disabled on non-Nvidia GPU, and while not exceeding VRAM)
- VIRTUAL TEXTURE MAX PPF: 16 (0 or 1 is the fastest - but cause more texture popping, 4 may be good one, in some cases 64, in others 128 or even around 10000 [set in console - vt_maxppf - it resets after game closing]).[6]. E.g. set the value to no more than 8 for CPUs with 2 or 4 cores and to 16 for CPUs with 6 or more cores (e.g. if you have an Intel CPU with 4 physical cores and HT and you experience lags with the variable set to 64, try setting the value to 16). [7]
- SHADOW RESOLUTION: 2048
- DISPLAY MODE: borderless windowed mode (posible tearing; on full screen too). To turn on game mode, you need to set windowed mode temporarily.
- Set jobs_numthreads to 1 (for low end CPUs; this needs to be turned on in-game console, or wolfconfig with it turned to read only, or in the shortcut (+jobs_numthreads 1). Set it to 0 or 2 (default) in case of minifreezes.
- vt_cudaBudget (if using CUDA) - to a value below your frame time
- vt_restart - is necessary for most/all CVars starting with the prefix 'vt_' to have an effect.
- all four vt_pageImageSize* CVars to 16384. Actually, higher means better texture quality. Other values: 4096, 8196. Easily editable with id5 Tweaker. Set this to 16384 if you have a modern GPU with about 3 GB of RAM, or to 4096 if you have less than 1 GB (and in some cases less than 1.5 GB) of RAM and/or an older GPU. [8] Bare minimum for vt_pageImageSizeUnique is 4096 (below that values, there are blurry textures in chapter Wolfenstein Keep). All rest vt_pageImageSize* CVars can be set to even 256.
- If FPS issues still persist you may want to lower or disable Anti-Aliasing and/or Screen Space Reflections and/or lower your resolution to FHD since higher can have serious impact on the performance on older GPUs.
- Commands can be added to shortcut
...\Wolfenstein.The.New.Order\WolfNewOrder_x32.exe +fs_cachepath "C:\Users\Public" +vt_maxPPF 0 +jobs_numthreads 1 +vt_pageimagesizevmtr 2048 +vt_pageImageSizeUnique 2048 +vt_pageImageSizeUniqueDiffuseOnly 256 +vt_pageImageSizeUniqueDiffuseOnly2 256 (29 vs 34 FPS on AMD and C2Q).
- For further reading on detail analysis see here and additionally look into ini file inside the package. See also RAGE Wiki article - it shares some commands with Wolfenstein.
- Additionaly download Process Lasso, press CTR+A to mark all processes, and set priority class and I/O priority to the lowest (besides the game process) - for weak CPUs.
|
Force the game to use copied AMD OpenGL driver (atioglxx.dll)[9]
|
Search for atioglxx.dll inside Windows folder, or use this one.
Then copy the file inside the game folder.
- For Nvidia, you can try out searching for nvoglnt.dll file (if found), or OpenGL32.dll (if it not performs worse, and if you don't use ReShade injector).
|
Stutter, textures pop-in, freezes on 3GB VRAM cards
Increase texture buffer[10]
|
- Set
+fc maxcachememoryMB 1024 +vt_maxPPF "16" +vt_pageimagesizevmtr 16384 +vt_pageImageSizeUnique 16384 +vt_pageImageSizeUniqueDiffuseOnly 16384 +vt_pageImageSizeUniqueDiffuseOnly2 16384 command line argument.
Notes
- This works only if you have 3 GB VRAM and should fix pop in even when you do a 180° turn.
|
Minifreezes[11]
|
- If the game freezes for about 1 two 2 seconds in regularly intervalls, add
+jobs_numThreads 0 to the launch options.
- Solutions borrowed from RAGE.
