* [https://www.gtainside.com/en/sanandreas/mods/127066-sa-dx-2-0-complex-shadows-v-0-369/ SA_DX 2.0] - Featured ENB mod. Game graphics and lighting completely revamped. The game can work faster with GTASA.WidescreenFix.asi attached with downgrader, instead of DirectX 2.0's attached sa_widescreenfix_lite.asi. For keeping more stable 30 FPS with SilentPatch, turn on frame limiter in game options (though with lower framerate it is not that helpful). SALodLights.asi (2DFX) can fix bad vehicles' textures bug (caused by Downgrader's Remastered GUI), and vegetation disappearing (the mod is a bit resource consuming). III.VC.SA.LimitAdjuster.asi can fix overall troubles with bad rendering and reflections (and also objects pop-in). Downgrader binary generates slightly brighter image than Hoodlum one. Shadows flickering can be fixed by using this [https://www.gtainside.com/en/sanandreas/mods/127112-sa-dx-2-0-complex-shadows-v-0-369-flicker-fix/ fix] (it's d3d9.dll - attached in mod download link above). Since now "Complex Shadows" can be turned on in the game - press Shift + Enter, then check in Effect to activate it (can decrease FPS noticeably - the same for using Mix Sets). In certain cases setting TwoPassRendering=2 in SilentPatch can be also useful for object flickering (resource consuming). Check also load whole map mod above, and memory 2048. When you launch the game with ENB, wait patiently, and do not press anything on desktop, till the game shows up, to avoid infinite loading bug. In certain scenarios with low FPS, Memory 2048, and Optimiser.ASI attached with ENB, can decrease performance, then Game Mode can make the game more playable. Additionaly, you can check this [[Microsoft Windows#Disable "Control Flow Guard"|fix]] for smoother gameplay. Creative Alchemy also seem to help for a bit better smoothness (at least on Creative cards). For another posible FPS fix, see below. | * [https://www.gtainside.com/en/sanandreas/mods/127066-sa-dx-2-0-complex-shadows-v-0-369/ SA_DX 2.0] - Featured ENB mod. Warnings
- The macOS (OS X) version of this game does not work on macOS Catalina (version 10.15) or later due to the removal of support for 32-bit-only apps.
Key points
- Although unofficial, online mods have an active estimated monthly playerbase of over 500,000 players.[2]
- Extensive modding community with thousands of mods available. See Modding.
- Ability to import your music for your own custom radio station.
- Exceeding 30 FPS introduces gameplay and physics issues. See Timing-related issues.
- Many visual features are either missing or broken without mods.
- Downgrading is a must, as many fixes do not work on later game versions (latest Steam one also lacks ⅒ of the original songs)[3]

Version differences
- This game has seen multiple revisions since its initial v1.0 release: v1.01 ("No More Hot Coffee" patch), v2.00 ("Second Edition" re-prints), v3.0 (initial Steam version), and "NewSteam r1/2" (latest Steam revisions).[6]
- The Microsoft Store version is a completely different port based on the mobile version of the game.
- The Second Edition re-prints of the game has hard-coded checks that prevents major modifications to the game. See Downgrading on how to make it mod-friendly.
- The Microsoft Store and Steam versions lack some radio songs that were present in the retail release.[3] To restore them in Steam version, see Downgrading.

Widescreen resolution
- Game normally renders stretched images. In-game widescreen option uses correct Aspect Ratio but cuts view (Vert-). Use ThirteenAG's Widescreen Fix for proper widescreen support.
- SilentPatch restores 5:4 and 16:9 resolutions with non-1.01 and non-2.0 versions,[12] albeit far from perfection

Y-Axis Sensitivity Fix
Download |
---|
Y-axis sensitivity is a constant value, while X-axis sensitivity can be adjusted from options. This makes the movement of mouse hard to control, as your mouse won't move vertically the same amount as it does horizontally. This small script re-writes Y-axis sensitivity to same value as X-axis sensitivity to fix this problem.

Issues unresolved
- Even though practically every major bug has been addressed by mods such as SilentPatch and TTDISA, there's no guarantee you won't encounter some of the rarest ones[19]
- Some save corrupting glitches can be worked around with an online repair tool or a savegame editor[20]
German Steam version doesn't work on OS X
- The German Steam version for OS X doesn't work. Rockstar is investigating this issue.[21]
Issues fixed
- An unlocked or incorrect frame limiter can cause timing related issues.
Relevant issues:
- Game-breaking bugs and glitches
- Some missions such as Amphibious Assault or Driving School missions[22] or Mike Torreno (on entering the airport) are impassable or incredibly difficult
- Some missions show black screen: Cleaning The Hood (after entering Crack Den building) or Cesar Vialpando (after entering to tune shop) or during robbering betting shop (after leaving the place [+ indestructible doors by detonator with unlocked framerate]), and Vertical Bird (after entering the ship; precisely game crashes).
- Physical weirdness
- Vehicles & bicycles handle like brakes are always on, decelerate almost immediately, and seem feathered whenever in-air
- Inability to dive underwater
- Gameplay absurdities
- Crashes when listening to User Radio (fixed in patch 1.01)[26]
- Cutscenes not ending (black screen - described above)[24]
- You cannot zoom in and out the map.
Solutions:
Turn on in-game frame limiter[27] |
---|
|
Use Fraps (workaround) |
---|
To not need going into the game menu for turning on frame limiter every time you need, you can start recording with Fraps on Half-Size, 30 FPS and frame lock set in the program. It shouldn't affect gameplay smoothness on more current configurations. But be aware that free version of Fraps won't record more than 30 seconds. You can install Autosave Cleo Mod to not worry about losing your progress while encountering posible glitches while passing through a lot of missions at one time (or e.g. if you don't want to mistakenly load the game with your progress lost, instead of just repeating failed mission on current usaved game save (and e.g. if you have a habit of immediate loading of last save after failing a mission, you may also easily lost your not saved for a long time progress) |
Use FramerateVigilante project[28] [29] |
---|
The project is currently in beta stage. As for now, it contains:
|
Game crash or black screen after Puncture Wounds mission
Change Data Execution Prevention setting[30] |
---|
Add a DEP Exception for gta_sa.exe here (tick second option, add to the list) or in Windows Defender, and run this binary. This fix won't work for ENB.exe during this mission. Alternatively turn off also CFG in Windows Defender (set for separate application) and turn on frame limiter, delete Insanity Audio Pack, turn on AA, delete gta_sa.set in My Documents, for other black screen issues, try also set the lowest resolution.

Modding tools
- Magic.TXD - Easy to use program that lets you edit .txd files.
- IMG Factory - Powerful and feature-rich tool to edit .img files.
Featured websites
- GTAInside - Very popular and long running GTA modding site with a huge catalog of mods.
- GameModding - Mod site with many mods available for many games; similar to NexusMods.
- GTA Garage Mod Database
- GTA-All - Newer website with lots of high-quality mods available.
Featured mods
- Mix Sets - Collection of various mods which add many tweaks and features (requires CLEO installed).
- SkyGfx - Brings accurate PS2 and Xbox graphics and effects to the PC version of San Andreas.
- SkyUI - Brings accurate PS2/Xbox-like user interface to the PC version of San Andreas with some additional improvements and widescreen support.
- Project2DFX - Improves draw distances, asset streaming, and adds distant lights. Fixes certain problems with flickering objects with ENB, but in cost of some performance loss - even very big when using whole map tex mods. In case of infinite level loading, use this .ini
- Load Whole Map - It loads all map objects into RAM in cost of some performance loss. The whole game map will always be loaded. Fixes problems rendering blank holes instead of textures in distant with 2DFX. The mod can cause crash when using big, RAM consuming tex mods like RoSA Project.
- Remastered GUI Textures - Adds the remastered GUI from the mobile versions. Note: RemasteredGUI attached with Downgrader, can cause black textures of cars bug with ENB. In such case, use only mod downloaded from linked site above.
- ThirteenAG's CLEO Scripts - E.g. quicksave, autosave, walk mod, Radio For All Vehicles, SA.ManualDrivebyRemake, IV Pickups, Buy Back Your Weapons,
- Enterable Hidden Interiors - Allows to enter buildings otherwise confined only in cutscenes or not used.
- First Person Mod
- Improved Vehicle Features - Required by some car packs.
- SA_DX 2.0 - Featured ENB mod. Shadows flickering can be fixed by using this fix (it's d3d9.dll - attached in mod download link above). Additionaly, you can check this fix for smoother gameplay. Creative Alchemy also seem to help for a bit better smoothness (at least on Creative cards). For another posible FPS fix, see below.
- V Graphics - Very successful and popular ENB done so that you could enjoy some graphics very similar to GTA V. Don't use without SilentPatch (worse graphics). Much more resource requring than SA_DirectX 2.0. You can lower drawing distance and FX quality (deteriorating graphics quality) in game options. Gameplay NOTE: To get double FPS increase in V Graphics[46] (possibly also in DirectX 2.0), press SHIFT+ENTER in-game, and in "LIMITER", disable "WaitLimitRederer". This function is used even whe limiter is disabled, and it decreases performance drastically (and it doesn't have any impact on graphics). Furthermore, if you updated ENB's d3d9.dll, you will have "EnableComplexShadows" option in EFFECT turned on by default. It is an experimental and resource consuming option. Turn on "EnableShadow" instead. It will make shadows look like it was intended by mod creator (complex shadows were introduced in ENB update, and probably not properly implemented by specific mod creators).
- V Graphics Update 2 - new arrangements, effects, along with various mod variants for your taste.
- RenderX 2.0 + obligatory fix - Visually looks between SA_DirectX 2.0 and RenderHook. It is specific combination of ENB with Reshade. Installation tutorial - click
- RenderHook (not ENB) - Implements DirectX 11 rendering API to GTA San Andreas as well as totally new rendering pipeline. Various based mods can be downloaded here: 1 or 2 or 3 Incompatibilities: SAMP, Skygfx, 13AG's GTASA.WidescreenFix.asi (in others - possible aspect ratio problems), 2DFX and SilentPatch requires appropriate .ini changes; Widescreen mod - changing RenderHook name to _gtaRenderHook.asi). If small window is shown or low resolution with crash while getting to game advanced options, change UseDefaultAdapter="false" in settings.xml. The mod can be used with Reshade in DX10+ mode.
- Memory 2048 - Cleo script that gives the game to use more memory. It is irreplaceable when you install high resolution texture or mods that use lots of memory. Game may also work and load faster. Fixes disappearing and flickering textures issues. Alternative values scripts - link (memory512.cs may be slower but more stable in case of issues)
- Insanity Vegetation
- BSOR: American Dream Vegetation mod
- GTA V Del Perro Pier v2
- Somewhere Near Grove Street K - Retexture
- East Los Santos Retextured
- Groove Street Insanity HD
- Freakin' Jeffersion
- El Corona Mod K-Retexture
- SRt3 Mipmap - Retextures the entire map. Project goal is to retexture any piece/object of San Andreas by textures of much higher quality. Don't use attached peds pack, if you encounter crashes during missions.
- SAUR — Ultimate Re-Texture - The global re-texture design of the entire state. It includes components with such well-known projects as the SRT 1.7 project and RoSA. Lite (1.77GB) and full version (8.86GB) available. While using ENB, don't use default mip maps from full version - they cause problem of grain on textures. Lite version has x8 mip maps, while full version, even x12, and the provide better quality.
- Rosa Project Pack - The main objective of the project - to replace all standard textures not just to high-quality HD textures, but also making them very similar to the original textures.
- 90s Atmosphere Vehicles Pack (works stable only with gsx.asi and VehicleSpecialAbilities.asi. Don't use ImVehFt and VehFuncs to avoid crashes)
- 90s Atmosphere Vehicles Pack Reborn 2.0
- Jericho's Mega Vehicles Pack Download
- Best of the Best cars
- CJ, Characters Remastered Legacy
- INSANITY Weapons Items
- INSANITY Audio Pack - New weapon, NPC, SFX sounds. Be aware - it causes black screen bug before missions very often. For better sound quality IndirectSound 0.17 is recommended (newer versions have sound disappearing issue) or Creative Alchemy. Be aware of some performance overhaul, or use Alchemy or Alchemy for All both with Buffers=5 set in dsound.ini (in case of sound disapearing bug).
- San Andreas Cinematic Sound Effects - Standart San Andreas has very low quality illegible sounds. This mod fixes this and created for purely new gameplay experience.
- San Andreas Ambient Sounds - SAAS - This mod does NOT change any in-game sound. It's NOT a replacement for any object's sound (like cars, peds, etc). It only adds "ambience" (AKA background sound).
- FPSUnlock - Unlocks default 99 FPS limit in SAMP. Be aware - sirens don't work, and vehicles handle a bit different.
- GPS Mod
- flickr.asi - Mod by 13AG preventing from heavy flicker of textures e.g. while flying. If it causes the game to crash on startup with ENB, launch "!RUN ADMIN FOR ENB 0.313.bat" attached with V Graphics or DirectX 2.0.
- LodLimit.cs - CLEO mod (may reduce performance).
- yacl.asi - Corona limit adjuster
- Multi-sampling Fix
- Open Limit Adjuster - Aims to bring back limit adjusters to the scene. Does not aim to be just a limit adjuster, but a limit purger. That's, turning whatever previously was limited into unlimited, being only limited by the machine/application capacity (featured mod attached Downgrader to install optionally). Slight performance impact when using big texture mods and ENB.
- IDE_DD_Tweaker.asi - Can cause the game to crash in the end of game loading with III.VC.SA.LimitAdjuster.asi (Open Limit Adjuster) installed.
- FPS Adjuster - It is a CLEO mod which can enhance performance of the game, and also allows changing FPS limit by NUM8 and NUM2, NUM5 in-game. The keys doesn't work with some mods. General troubleshooting
- Stream Memory fix - useful when you installed too much mods into the game, and it can't load the textures fast enough, and it loads them slowly[47] (positive performance impact).
- FPS Optimizer [48] - CLEO mod which improves rendering in the game and (slightly) improvemes performance. Incompatible with Stream Memory fix.
Total conversions
- GTA Underground - An work-in-progress mod that attempts to bring the GTA III, Vice City, Bully, and Manhunt maps to San Andreas. View video updates here.
- GTA Vice City Stories: PC Edition - A standalone total conversion that attempts to port and remaster GTA: VCS to PC (does not require GTA: SA to play).
- Things to do in San Andreas: Overall Improvements - Total conversion mod that returns cut content from the final game and fixes them (requires new game to be started)

- Installed this on a clean installation of the Second Edition release a few months ago and noticed mods like SkyGfx and Widescreen Fix didn't have settings or features their latest releases at the time had.

- This method seems to be the only one that worked as ThirteenAG's Window Mode ASI causes constant crashes with the latest version of Widescreen Fix.

- ↑ From the Readme, about the frame limiter:
This option allows the game to go faster than 30 [sic] frames per second. Be warned that this will not magically make GRAND THEFT AUTO: San Andreas run better, but rather may make your experience "more variable". We do not recommend un-locking the frame rate. If you have a fast machine, it is far preferable to increase resolution, detail options, anti aliasing, etc. rather than trying to achieve a higher frame rate by un-locking the Frame Limiter. This will lead to a more variable game play experience. - ↑ https://github.com/GTAmodding/FramerateVigilante
