High frame rate

Remove FPS cap[3]
  1. Open MaiDFXvr_bleu.exe with a hex editor such as HxD.
  2. Press Ctrl+R and set Datatype to Hex-values.
  3. Search for 320000002564202066707300 and replace the 32 at the start with the desired framerate (in hexadecimal).
  4. Search for 8B483883C40485C9740C, it should be followed by E8 XX XX XX XX 6A 01 (the XX might be different depending on the localization - for the English .exe, it's 4E 7E 14 00)
  5. Replace the last 01 with 00 to completely disable the frame limit in the menus.
  6. Save the file.

Notes

Too high framerates ingame and menus may cause menu navigation to be too hard and game speed to be way too high.

Issues fixed

Crash after the intro when using Glide wrapper

Game needs to have been run in admin mode at least once, since it needs special privileges to write its settings in ubi.ini, which is in the Windows folder.
Disable movies in configuration file[5]
  1. Edit %WINDIR%\UbiSoft\ubi.ini
  2. Under section [Hype - The Time Quest] find a line PlayVideo=1 and change it to PlayVideo=0

Black screen when using Glide wrapper

Install compatibility fixes[6]
  1. Download installation package for Hype: The Time Quest and extract it.
  2. Go to a folder Compatibility and run PatchInstall.bat to add the compatibility entries to system's database.

Game crashes on Alt+Tab

Install dgVoodoo 2.

Installing on modern versions of Windows

64-bit versions of Windows can't run the CD installer due to it being a 16-bit application. Trying to run the installer in Windows 7 x64 will cause the process to freeze in the background and require the task manager to close.

Alternative Installer[citation needed]

Notes

Alternative installer only works with English, German and Polish version of the game.
For documentation and common problems, see Hype: The Time Quest - Alternative Installer
Manual installation[7]
  1. Create a folder named Hype somewhere on your hard drive (from now on, we'll be referring to it as <path-to-game>).
  2. From the root directory of your CD copy files: DSETUP.DLL, DSETUP16.DLL, DSETUP32.DLL to <path-to-game>.
  3. Copy folders DLL, Gamedata and InstData to <path-to-game>.
  4. Go to exe folder on your CD.
  5. Copy Gli.ini to <path-to-game>.
  6. Copy MaiD3Dvr_bleu.exe from D3D folder to <path-to-game>.
  7. Copy MaiDFXvr_bleu.exe from Glide 3x folder copy to <path-to-game>.
  8. Copy all files from UbiConfig folder to <path-to-game>.
  9. Go back to a root folder of your CD and go to LangData\<your language>\world\.
  10. Copy folder levels to <path-to-game>\Gamedata\World.
    • When asked about scaling folders, answer yes.
  11. Go to the Windows directory (%WINDIR%)
  12. In it create a folder named UbiSoft.
  13. From the root directory of your CD copy files: DSETUP.DLL, DSETUP16.DLL, DSETUP32.DLL and SetupUbi.exe to a newly created %WINDIR%\UbiSoft
    • It may be possible that the folder already exists, as it's shared with other Ubisoft product of that era. In such case, do not replace any of the files.
  14. From InstData directory on your CD, copy strings.eng to %WINDIR%\UbiSoft
  15. Download installation package for Hype: The Time Quest and extract it.
  16. From config folder copy ubi.ini to %WINDIR%\UbiSoft
    • If you had other Ubisoft products installed that use the same application, you have to manually edit ubi.ini adding Hype - The Time Quest under [INSTALLED PRODUCTS] as well as the section responsible for game configuration (just copy lines from [Hype - The Time Quest] to [OSD] from ubi.ini provided in installation package).
  17. If your language is different than English, edit ubi.ini, find a line Language=English under [Hype - The Time Quest] section and change it to a language you're using in your copy (e.g. for Polish it's Language=Polish - incorrect language will make all the characters mute).
  18. Go to a folder, where you've extracted the files from installation package.
  19. GO to a folder Compatibility and run PatchInstall.bat to add the compatibility entries to system's database.
  20. Install nGlide wrapper, if you haven't already.
  21. Finally, go to <path-to-game> and run Ubiassistant.exe and choose 3DFX configuration.
  22. Run the game using MaiDFXvr_bleu.exe.

System requirements

Windows

Notes

  1. SafeDisc retail DRM does not work on Windows 10[1] or Windows 11 and is disabled by default on Windows Vista, Windows 7, Windows 8, and Windows 8.1 when the KB3086255 update is installed.[2]
  2. 2.0 2.1 When running this game without elevated privileges (Run as administrator option), write operations against a location below %PROGRAMFILES%, %PROGRAMDATA%, or %WINDIR% might be redirected to %LOCALAPPDATA%\VirtualStore on Windows Vista and later (more details).
