+ | # Go into that folder and make a folder named <code>Rage</code>
+ | # The game will now correctly store the texture cache between sessions.
+ | |||
+ | '''Notes''' | ||
+ | {{ii}} The game creates two files there, one of which is 1 GB in size. This file is not deleted after ending or uninstalling the game and has to be deleted manually.
+ | {{ii}} Normal Windows shortcuts do not work to relocate the <code>id Software</code> folder or the <code>Rage</code> folder to another drive. You can run the game with the startup command <code>+fs_cachepath "x:\cache"</code> to manually specify the location of the cache (it can't be executed from console). Create the folder before changing the path.
+ | {{ii}} Slow HDD can prevent from achieving high FPS. Consider placing the cache on RAM disk (e.g. with free [http://www.radeonramdisk.com/software_downloads.php RadeonRAMDisk]) or SSD (even whole game).

Warnings
- The macOS (OS X) version of this game does not work on macOS Catalina (version 10.15) or later due to the removal of support for 32-bit-only apps.
Key points
- Use id5 Tweaker to change advanced settings and optimize performance.
- Achievements are disabled in the 64-bit version
- Texture streaming is an issue even on new systems.[citation needed]
- Rage runs from RAM Disk without problems.

Notes

CUDA Transcode Improved Performance
Rage uses very highly compressed texture data as part of its MegaTexture technology engine.[2] Users with a fast Nvidia video card can benefit from CUDA transcoding which will offload the decompressing task to the video card rather than the CPU. Users with 4 or more processor cores instead can benefit from extra CPU transcoding by disabling this feature and thus giving all available video card time to rendering the game.

Issues unresolved
Regular crashes with ATI/AMD desktop and mobile graphics
- Running RAGE on some systems will cause regular crashes, and this issue remains unfixed.[10]
- Using third-party drivers does not fix the issue.[11]
- Only seems to happen on the 32-bit version.
- Issue only happens when using drivers older than 22.7.1. Since then, AMD rebuilt their OpenGL driver from the ground up, fixing this error.

- Tested on system with Haswell Core i5-4460, Intel HD 4600 running Fedora 36, Mesa 22.1.3 and latest stable Wine. Game uses alpha-to-coverage for transparency effects, not configurable and possibly only at 2x which is not supported on hardware side, in-game MSAA overrides anything whenever it can. (only 4x and 8x MSAA supported in hardware, Windows driver expose 2x MSAA but emulated in software.)
