Version differences

Railroad Tycoon (Classic Version)

  • much less system requirements (runs on XT with CGA and floppy drive)
  • Sound Support: PC Speaker, Tandy Sound, Adlib, Roland MT-32 Midi board
  • includes England map, this was removed in the deluxe version.
  • provides animations when trains crash into each other or when train falls into a river because of a damaged bridge
  • Value for ingame money was stored in a 16 Bit address. This means the money was between the range of -32768 to +32767 and the integer value could overflow and underflow. This could be used for cheating.
  • was never released as Freeware version, only as retail.

Railroad Tycoon Deluxe

  • higher system requirements (386 minimum)
  • higher-resolution graphics (VGA 640x480x16)
  • better sound support (Adlib, Covox Sound Master, Soundblaster, Soundblaster Pro, Pro Audio Spectrum, Pro Audio Spectrum Plus, Soundblaster 16, Roland MT-32 Midi board, General Midi
  • Maps: England removed, Africa and South America added
  • The money bug was fixed. It was no more possible to overflow or underflow the value for the money.
  • instead of animations when trains crash, the Deluxe version only provides still images.
  • was released as Freeware
