Version differences
- When launching the game for the first time, you have the option to play the free shareware version of the game. To get access to the full game, files from original Quake II need to be located during initial installation process.[1]
- If you don't have original Quake II at the moment of installation and are wishing to switch to original later, just copy (with replacement) all the
.pak
files from original'sbaseq2
directory to RTXbaseq2
directory.
Essential improvements
Enable original soundtrack
- RTX version doesn't include music from original CD version. You can get it back using this guide.

System | Location |
---|---|
Windows | <path-to-game>\baseq2\q2config.cfg[Note 1] |
Linux | $HOME/.quake2rtx/baseq2/q2config.cfg |
- This game does not follow the XDG Base Directory Specification on Linux.

||
Anti-aliasing (AA) | Resolution scale up to 200%, TAA, and temporal upscaling. | ||
Vertical sync (Vsync) | |||
60 FPS and 120+ FPS | The framerate is capped at 1000 FPS | ||

Ray tracing (RT) | Both multivendor and Nvidia-specific Vulkan raytracing extensions are supported. |
Renderer differences
RTX
- Uses hardware path tracing, and as such requires graphics card and driver capable of
VK_KHR_ray_query
orVK_KHR_ray_tracing_pipeline
Vulkan extension. - This means that you don't need RTX GPU and DX12 DXR. For NVidia, raytracing Vulkan extensions are supported starting from Pascal (10-series) 6GB cards and work on Win 7 and up.[2]
- New high resolution models of weapons and items, updated textures and lighting.
- Exposes a wide number of sun position and environment lighting settings.
OpenGL
- Uses OpenGL engine of Q2PRO source port.
- Does not require special hardware.
- On non-RTX hardware can be set via command line, see API section.
Widescreen resolution
- Older versions of the program are Vert-. For proper weapon appearance and Hor+ support
cl_adjustfov
variable must be set to 1. See gallery below. - Fix is unnecessary on latest up-to-date version of program.
Fix weapon appearance, enable Hor+[3] |

Mouse Y-axis inversion | Now natively supported in Menu. For old versions: Open the console(~), type seta m_pitch -0.022 .[4] |

Audio
Audio feature | State | Notes |
---|---|---|
Separate volume controls | Semi supported, Music is adjustable separate from master, but no sound effects slider. Ambient sound mute. | |
Surround sound | Only with OpenAL | |
Subtitles | No voiceovers. | |
Closed captions | ||
Mute on focus lost | Use Special K. Does work on the vulkan RTX version, but can't render a UI, so switch to OpenGL temporarily to adjust options. Global inject works best here. |
