Essential improvements

Three-channel audio support

The game has support for three-channel audio, which requires the audio hardware built into the PCjr or Tandy 1000 computer. Other systems are limited to one-channel audio played through the PC speaker.
Use a third-party AGI interpreter[citation needed]

Notes

Modern AGI interpreters include ScummVM and NAGI will automatically use the Tandy sounds regardless of video render mode. As such it is possible to have Tandy sounds with EGA video, which was not possible with the original game.
Use DOSBox[citation needed]

Notes

If DOSBox is configured to emulate a PCjr or Tandy computer, the game detects and uses the emulated PCjr/Tandy sound hardware for three-channel audio. This will simultaneously also force the game to run in 16 colour PCjr/Tandy graphics mode.
Patch the game for Adlib[4]}

Notes This is an experimental patch for Sierra's old AGI games, to makes them play three voice music and sound effects via a Adlib or Soundblaster compatible card.

King's Quest II Unofficial Remake

A complete and free remake of the game, it adds new VGA style graphics, dialogue, an updated Point-and-Click UI, and a complete soundtrack.

It can be found here.

Notes

  1. When running this game without elevated privileges (Run as administrator option), write operations against a location below %PROGRAMFILES%, %PROGRAMDATA%, or %WINDIR% might be redirected to %LOCALAPPDATA%\VirtualStore on Windows Vista and later (more details).
  2. File/folder structure within this directory reflects the path(s) listed for Windows and/or Steam game data (use Wine regedit to access Windows registry paths). Games with Steam Cloud support may store data in ~/.steam/steam/userdata/<user-id>/10100/ in addition to or instead of this directory. The app ID (10100) may differ in some cases. Treat backslashes as forward slashes. See the glossary page for details.
