Version differences
The following versions are known to exist. You can check the version number by pressing Alt+V in-game.
Known differences between versions are listed below.
- The pre-release version does not show a version number. When Alt+V is pressed, it will instead show "PRINCE OF PERSIA 2". This version has many bugs compared to the release build. For instance: missing footstep sounds, the inability to "lock onto" loose tiles for running jumps, a level that can be exited immediately after entering it, and more.
- The floppy version 1.0 (files dated April 30, 1993) adds an option to the installer to "Make Program Accessible under Windows". This option seems to be missing in the other versions.
- The CD-ROM version 1.0 (files dated May 27, 1995) can be found on the Prince of Persia CD Collection released in 1995. Identifies in SETUP as "v1.01".
- The CD-ROM version 1.1 (1998) can be found on the Prince of Persia Collection - Limited Edition. This release is recognisable as it contains a video about the making of "Prince of Persia 3D".
Only sound and music options are available in SETUP. When Alt+V is pressed, it will just show "V1.1". However, it lacks in-game sound and music data for General MIDI (MT-32 is not affected).- This version has some unique bugs. There's a visual glitch when the player runs up exit doors, and enemy AI is broken: they will haphazardly walk into traps and off cliffs to their doom, and they can bunch up on a single tile tile when fighting the player.
Essential improvements
General MIDI
- The music was originally composed for the Roland MT-32[1] and then arranged for other sound cards.
In regards to playing the General MIDI music on a Roland SC-55: It uses the Roland GS extensions for percussion.
Unfortunately, it sends drum changes that are incompatible with the Roland SC-55mkII or other later Roland models like the SC-88.
Because the game uses the Roland GS extensions, it will not sound the same when played on a non-GS compatible General MIDI compatible device. - A patch[2] by Vogons user Tikalat is available to fix some of these issues, ensuring that the game will sound correct on other Roland GS compatible devices.

Random delays to running jumps
- Prince of Persia 2 modified the code for running jumps from POP1 so there is sometimes a random delay applied (lasting up to 333ms), and unlike the first game, it does not delay jumps if the player is close to an edge but not close enough to successfully complete the jump.
For the same running jump behavior as in Prince of Persia 1, apply the modifications to the EXE described in this post |
