Key points
- First versions require adapter to connect to PC. Later revisions allows to connect to PC via USB or Bluetooth.
- Genesis/Mega Drive control pads are the logical progression from Master System control pads, replacing 1 and 2 with 𝐁 and 𝐂 respectively, while adding an extra two face buttons, 𝐀 and sᴛᴀʀᴛ to bring the total number of buttons to four.
- Originally controller connects to the system via a DE-9 port.
- Lacks native XInput support, requiring the use of a XInput wrapper (see XInput wrappers) for games that do not support DirectInput or the controller natively.
Inputs
- 4 × digital buttons: 𝐀, 𝐁, 𝐂, sᴛᴀʀᴛ
- 4 × digital directional buttons (d-pad): ↑, ↓, ←, →
Controller variations
- The Sega Genesis/Mega Drive Control Pad (コントロールパッド) is the official controller of the Sega Genesis/Mega Drive. Three button controllers are known officially as Control Pads in both North America and Europe, and SJ-3500s in Japan (following a system set up by the SG-1000). There are many "updates" and alternatives to this controller, the most notable being the Six Button Control Pad. This article covers only the basic three button variants.
Six Button Control Pad
- The Six Button Control Pad became the de facto controller for the Sega Genesis/Mega Drive, replacing the standard Control Pad internationally around 1993/1994. It is officially known as the 6 Button Arcade Pad in North America and the Fighting Pad 6B (ファイティングパッド6B) in Japan.
Inputs
- 1 × digital shoulder buttons:: ᴍᴏᴅᴇ
- 7 × digital buttons: 𝐀, 𝐁, 𝐂, 𝐗, 𝗬, 𝐙, sᴛᴀʀᴛ
- 4 × digital directional buttons (d-pad): ↑, ↓, ←, →
SEGA Genesis Mini Controller
- Control Pads are full-size replica controllers that connect through USB Type-A. Controllers do not require special adapter.
- The North American and European Minis include three-button controllers, while the Japanese controllers have six buttons. Officially licensed six-button controllers made specifically for the Mini are also sold separately in North America and Europe.
SEGA Genesis Control Pad for 'Nintendo Switch Online'
- In September 2021, when Nintendo 64 games and Sega Genesis titles were added to Nintendo Switch Online alongside the Expansion Pack, wireless Nintendo 64 Controllers and SEGA Genesis Control Pads were released for use with their respective services.
- The North American and European markets have available only three-buttons controllers, while the Japanese controllers have only six-buttons devices.
- Both versions have 3 additional buttons: ᴄᴀᴘᴛᴜʀᴇ, ʜᴏᴍᴇ and ᴍᴏᴅᴇ.
- Wireless connection with rechargeable Battery – Use the included USB A-C cable to charge the controller.
- Controllers are supported on PC through reWASD application. See more.

Windows

Hardware
Mayflash SEGA Genesis & Mega Drive Controller Adapter
- The SEGA Genesis & Mega Drive Controller Adapter allows you to connect up to two SEGA Genesis & Mega Drive Controllers to PC or Nintendo Switch. With two Adapters, up to four SEGA Genesis & Mega Drive controllers can be used at the same time.
- Directly compatible with PC. No driver needed, just plug and play. Supports Xinput and Dinput.
- Supports Turbo/Auto Fire/Hold functions. The Left Stick and D-Pad can be switched.
- Compatible with Nintendo Switch console.
USB Genesis RetroPort
- Adapter to use 3 or 6 button Sega Genesis controllers.
- No drivers to install or update.
Bliss-Box Gamer-Pro
- Directly compatible with PC. No driver needed, just plug and play.
- A wide variety of controllers are fully supported right out of the box. See the Compatibility List.
- Global Button Mapping - starting with 3.0 this layout has changed for modern gaming. The internal button mapping is set up so that buttons on different controllers match each other's layouts as closely as possible.
- Adapter can update firmware and be used on PC, PS3 (up to 4 players), Xbox (single player only) or Switch (up to 4 players). Each controller port has its own firmware chip so multiple firmware versions can be used if desired. See more.
- Allows to use special API to communicate with applications (eg. RetroArch). See API tool documentation.
- A 12v power supply is completely optional and simply allows the HUB to be self-powered and supplies additional power for a stronger Playstation Force Feedabck effect only.
- Adapter work on Windows, OSX, Linux, Raspberry Pi, most all Android device.
- Hot Swap support. This feature makes it easy to switch between controllers in mid-game. If Auto Pause is enabled (default setup). The adapter will pause your game while you switch, and you can continue playing when you're ready. The new controller is detected automatically.
- Auto Pause: when the adapter senses the controller has become unplugged, it presses the pause button.
- Single-Player Mode, the adapter can be switched to Single-Player Mode. This will allow for some advance features like using the adapter on an Xbox with special firmware, or up-linking to other future Bliss-Box add-on accessories.
- Native Support, adapter have the ability to allow communication from the emulated game directly to the controller and back with any of the supported controllers.
- Do not natively support Xinput. It can do so however, with the use of 3rd party software (ie. x360ce or XOutput).
- Hotkey: Pressing and holding sᴛᴀʀᴛ will trigger a Hotkey combo. You may configure this combo for a hot key in front-ends like RetroArch.
Support In Games
- Support for some controller features may be only available on certain systems. Refer to game-specific articles for details.
