Use CD music in English version

These steps change the German CD version to use English text. This requires the German CD version (GOG.com has both).
The intro and some minor game text will still be in German.
To have German speech with English subtitles copy only .DAT from the English folder.
NPCs will have 50x their normal XP value when you recruit them, as the English version uses has a multiplier for all XP gained or required. This can be fixed by hex-editing STAR.DAT, but must be done from a save from before the NPC is recruited to prevent excessive stat increases.
Use CD music in English version[6]
  1. Go to DATA in the English installation folder.
  2. Copy SPEECH.DAT, SPEECH.FN, SPEECHCD.DAT, SPEECHCD.FN and STAR.DAT.
  3. Go to DATA in the German installation folder.
  4. Paste the files here, replacing existing files when prompted.
  5. Delete DPATCH.DAT.
  6. Use the German version of the game, which will now be in English.

Game data

Save game data location

System Location
DOS <path-to-game>\GAMES\*.GAM
Windows <path-to-game> (mounted in DOSBox)[Note 1]
macOS (OS X) <path-to-game> (mounted in DOSBox)[Note 1]
Linux <path-to-game> (mounted in DOSBox)[Note 1]
Generated characters are stored in <path-to-game>\GAMES\CHARS1.DAT; this file is not needed for loading save games (characters are stored in each save).
In-game settings are stored in each save rather than shared.
Exported diary and character sheet files are saved in <path-to-game>.
Diary and character sheet data is saved to file when Print to is set to File in Game Options (F3). To print from within the game see printer support.
It's unknown whether this game follows the XDG Base Directory Specification on Linux. Please fill in this information.

Issues fixed

No voices (GOG.com)

GOG.com's Windows version is incorrectly configured.
Fix DOSBox IRQ[citation needed]
  1. Go to the installation folder.
  2. Edit dosbox_realms2.conf.
  3. Change irq=7 to irq=5 and save your changes.
  4. Voices will now work correctly in-game.

Printer support

Official DOSBox builds don't support printing.
Enable printer support[citation needed]
  1. Set up DOSBox printer support.
  2. For the GOG.com version, the file to edit is dosboxrealms2.conf in the installation folder.
  3. For the GOG.com version, also copy the FONTS folder from the DOSBox folder into the Realms of Arkania 2 folder.
  4. Journal pages and character sheets can now be printed when Print to is set to Printer in Game Options (F3).

Notes

  1. 1.0 1.1 1.2 File/folder structure within the installation folder reflects the path(s) listed for DOS game data. For the GOG.com release, file changes in DOSBox are redirected to <path-to-game>/cloud_saves/ even if GOG Galaxy is not used (this folder contains all redirected files, so some files in the cloud_saves folder might be temporary files or other files that do not contain saves or settings).
