Essential improvements

Manhunt Fixer

Fixes several issues on modern systems such as crashes, gate not opening, audio loops, AI issues and script issues by downloading and applying the latest version of these fixes automatically.

Includes multiple optional enhancement-mods, such as MHP and Manhunt.PluginMH. These can all also be installed individually.

Proton: to get the fixes included with Manhunt Fixer working on Proton, apply the WINEDLLOVERRIDES="d3d8,dinput8,ddraw=n,b" %command% as a command line argument.

Proton: included D3D8 wrapper causes many environmental textures to appear pitch-black. Currently advised to manually install fixes and skip ThirteenAG's custom D3D8 wrapper.

Use Manhunt Fixer
Proton: Autolocating Steam version does not work and results in an error. Manually locate game install location instead. Download Manhunt Fixer. Extract the files from the downloaded ZIP-file to whatever location desired. Run the fixer. Click Autolocate Steam Version or manually search for the installation path of Manhunt. Check any enhancements you wish to apply to the game. Click on Patch.

Apply Manhunt Fixer's main fixes manually

Skip intro-videos

Disable intro video through installing Manhunt.PluginMH mod
By default, the bSkipIntroSequence value in the PluginMH.ini file is set to true, skipping the intro video.

Manually replace intro video with an empty variant
Go to <path-to-game>\levels\GLOBAL\MPEG\. Delete or rename titles.bik. Download the empty video file. Put this empty video file in <path-to-game>\levels\GLOBAL\MPEG\. Rename it to titles.bik.

Widescreen

When playing in widescreen resolutions, the game suffers from some minor issues with incorrect size and placement of the HUD. Additionally there is a minor incorrectness regarding the aspect size and FOV of the game when playing with widescreen resolutions.

For Proton, apply the WINEDLLOVERRIDES="dinput8=n,b" %command% as a command line argument to get the Widescreen Fix properly working.

FOV

Adjust FOV through edit of ThirteenAG's Widescreen Fix configuration file
Apply ThirteenAG's Widescreen Fix. Open <path-to-game>/scripts/Manhunt.WidescreenFix.ini. Adjust the FOVFactor multiplier (standard: 0.0) to the desired value to make FOV either bigger or smaller. Save the file.

Use XInput Plus

Download XInput Plus. Set the target program to manhunt.exe Go to "Sticks", and change the "Rect Correction" slider from "0" to "1". Go to "DirectInput" and check "Enable DirectInput Output." Assign "LT/RT" to "Button 11/12" Assign "Right Stick" to "Z Axis/Z Rot" Assign "DPAD" to "Button 13-16" Press apply, this will install a DLL file in <path-to-game> (which will be automatically used when you start the game). Notes If Camera Y axis is inverted, go to "Sticks" to "Right Stick" and tick "Invert Y" option If something beeps when game launches, go to "Settings" to "Others" and untick "Enable Init Beep" option

DirectX 8.1 Error

Install DirectPlay
The game requires DirectPlay (part of the DirectX API) to be installed. On Windows 8 and newer this isn't installed by default as it was deprecated by Microsoft. Go to Control Panel. Click on Programs. Click on Turn Windows features on and off Click on Legacy Components Check the box DirectPlay. Select OK. Once the installation of DirectPlay is done, restart the computer.

Game not booting/crashing, gate at first level won't open and unable to pickup pickups

By Rockstar producing the Steam-version, they seemingly introduced some bugs like the gate not opening in the first level and being unable to pick up pickups.

The exe-patch makes the game run through testapp.exe (original retail executable without these issues) by renaming it to Manhunt.exe to fix these issues.

Additionally, it patches this renamed executable to fix a bug where the game won’t boot due to Data Execution Prevention (DEP) in Windows (integral part of anti virus protection and should never be disabled).

Saves a backup of the original executables.

Apply the exe-patch automatically by using Manhunt Fixer

Apply the exe-patch manually

Same as the exe-patch included in Manhunt Fixer. Can possibly be recognized by anti virus as malicious, but is safe. See its source code. Download the exe-patch. Extract all contents of exepatch.zip (exepatch.exe) to <path-to-game>. Run exepatch.exe. Executable is now patched and can be run without mentioned issues. Optional: exepatch.exe and manhunt.exe.backup can be safely removed from <path-to-game> if no issues are encountered after patching.

Glitched NPC's and 60+ FPS

On some machines, due to unknown causes, the games' frame rate limiter doesn't properly engage, which causes performance higher than 60 FPS. This can cause issues such as glitched AI where the AI just stands still or executes unexpected behavior. Make sure to only apply these fixes if suffering from this issue.

Cap the game to 60 FPS
Preferred solution over using wrappers as it leaves the game's code untouched.

Certain sound effects and music loop

Asynchronous file reading behavior has changed since Windows XP, which Manhunt depended on, causing a bug in this game where sound effects and music can loop. Manhunt Audio Fix fixes this issue this by simulating the old Windows XP asynchronous file reading behavior while keeping the audio intact.

For Proton, apply the WINEDLLOVERRIDES="dinput8=n,b" %command% as a command line argument to get this fix working.

Mods

MHP and Manhunt.PluginMH mods are fully compatible with each other.

Manhunt.PluginMH

Optionally already included in automatic Manhunt Fixer.

Only main enhancement enabled by default is skipping the intro sequence. Also adds optional developer menu, toggable HUD, custom menu with cheats, console and screenshot mode that can all be opened with specific hotkeys; use hotkey ~ to toggle the console, F1 to open the Rockstar Games developer menu, F2 to open custom menu from the mod itself, F3 to toggle screenshot mode and F4 to toggle the HUD.

Setting certain values to true in PluginMH.ini allows users to enable other enhancements like disabling the execution cameral, enable weapon properties adjuster, allow firearms and throwables to use executions, disable auto aim, disable breathing sound, disable heartbeat sound, make cut off heads not explode and more.

After having set bFirstPersonMode to true in PluginMH.ini, press T on the keyboard while in-game to activate first person mode.

Proton: to get this mod working on Proton, apply the WINEDLLOVERRIDES="ddraw=n,b" %command% as a command line argument.

Install Manhunt.PluginMH mod
Download ThirteenAG's Ultimate ASI loader (Ultimate-ASI-Loader.zip). This is needed to load the mod. Extract the contents of Ultimate-ASI-Loader.zip to a location of choice. Rename the extracted dinput8.dll file to ddraw.dll to avoid it overwriting other fixes. Move the ddraw.dll file to <path-to-game>. Download Manhunt.PluginMH. Extract all contents of PluginMH.zip into <path-to-game>.

MHP

Optionally already included in automatic Manhunt Fixer.

Implements some PlayStation 2 specific effects such as improved alpha rendering, improved halos around pickups (corona texture now visible), working usable object highlighting, improved environment mapping, improved visibility of player damage, improved lighting, improved vertex coloring, improved brightness setting (instead of it changing ambient light and gamma at the same time it now only changes the first), improved coloring (using PS2 analog coloring, disabled by default). All these settings are enabled by default if not said otherwise and can be toggled on and off through MHP.ini.

Also implements MSAA support through changing the nMSAA in MHP.ini to a value from 0 to a maximum 16 (0 by default). On Nvidia-hardware only it is advised to also set bRwMSAASupport to 1 to work around driver-related issues, avoiding black screen and graphical corruption while having MSAA enabled through this mod.

Install MHP mod
Download ThirteenAG's Ultimate ASI loader (Ultimate-ASI-Loader.zip). This is needed to load the mod. Extract the contents of Ultimate-ASI-Loader.zip to a location of choice.
