Essential improvements

Game crashes on startup

In order for the game to play music, the Windows Media Source Filter must be re-installed on newer versions of Windows
Music is fully restored with this fix
Install the Windows Media Source Filter[5]
  1. Download the Windows Media Source Filter Installer v1.7
  2. Extract the contents from the .zip file into a folder.
  3. Right-click the ApplyPatch.bat and run it as Administrator.
  4. Copy strmdll.dll and drmclien.dll into the game's installation folder.
  5. Make sure to use an un-patched version of the original .exe for the music to work in the game. (or at least one that works).
  6. Launch the game.

Notes

If the text in the console window is red, then you need to run the ApplyPatch.bat as Administrator
Windows Defender may appear with a warning when running the file. Select "More info" and then "Run anyway"
Manual installation of the Windows Media Source Filter[5]
  1. Download the Windows Media Source Filter Installer v1.7
  2. Extract the contents from the .zip file into a folder.
  3. Make a new folder in %WINDIR%\SysWOW64\ called Windows-Media-Source-Filter
  4. Copy drmclien.dll, strmdll.dll, dxmasf.dll and msadds32.ax from the .zip file to the Windows-Media-Source-Filter folder.
  5. Run DSFMgr.exe as administrator and register the dxmasf.dll and msadds32.ax files.
  6. Copy strmdll.dll and drmclien.dll into the game's installation folder.
  7. Launch the game.

Issues fixed

Music skipping/looping issues on Windows XP and later

The Windows Media Source Filter must be installed for this to have any effect or use.
No system file modifications are necessary.
Install the qasf.dll[5]
  1. Download the music fix: DirectShow - Windows Media Source Filter Installer v1.7
  2. Extract the contents of the downloaded .zip file into a folder.
  3. Copy the qasf 6.03.dll from the .zip file, to the where the game is located at (<path-to-game>).
  4. Move the game from its original installation folder. Or else the qasf.dll won't load.
  5. The qasf 6.03.dll that was copied to <path-to-game>, must be renamed to qasf.dll.
  6. Create a new .txt file in <path-to-game>, then rename the file extension from .txt to fr2.exe.local.
  7. Launch the game.

Notes

The game MUST NOT be located where it was originally installed to (<path-to-game>), or else the right qasf.dll won't load.
File extensions must be visible in Windows' File Explorer, in order for the .local file to be created.
It is possible to avoid renaming the game folder by setting DevOverrideEnable to a value of 1 in Image File Execution Options. This can be added with

reg add "HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Image File Execution Options" /v DevOverrideEnable /t REG_DWORD /d 1 /f

in an admin command prompt. Reboot is required for it to take effect. This allows system-wide DLL redirection via .local files or folders.
