Talk:Garry's Mod

About this board (talkcontribs)

v1-9 were not available on the FP forums before their closure. I believe those versions are still on the ModDB page.

SojerManLan (talkcontribs)

Well, both FP's old download website and FP forums were closed, so there is no official way to download these. If you find an official version somewhere else, you're welcome to link it here or in the article.

why does this keep getting REMOVED!

from the offical page where the content is uploaded,

" 1) This content is not made by me, this content belongs to © 2011 Valve Corporation". I made it only work as an addon for GarrysMod.

2) This is not warez - These don't include files that enable you to illegaly play the content game. These are content addons for a second game called garrysmod and these do not enable you to actually play content game. The purpose of these packs is to avoid the purchase of games just for their content for another game (GarrysMod) when you probably never will play the content source game itself.

3) We do not support piracy and never will. If any party owning copyrights, feels that their rights are fully or partially breached, my logic is flawed or otherwise displeasing of content creators, the content will be removed or edited to comply with the requirements they set us.

Also I wont provide support for people who have obtained GarrysMod in non-legitimate ways.

4) I am not asking anyone to pay for the content I did not personally create. The advertisements linked to the download buttons are for the work I did to make these packs work, not the content itself. I sincerely encourage the purchase of those games as I have enjoyed the titles myself quite a lot and these are wonderful, interesting games. The developers truly deserve your support and respect.

Just because a dude said that it's legal it doesn't make it any more legit. It's not legal, the Valve EULA doesn't allow you to redistribute their content.

Hawaii Beach (talkcontribs)

then why haven't Valve contacted the guy who originally uploaded the files / done a DCMA? maybe because you're wrong?

RaTcHeT302 (talkcontribs)

Did he get permission from Valve? No, then it's not legal. Is it stated anywhere that you can freely redristibute Valve's content outside of their games? No. The developer's content is protected by copyright law, this is in no way legal unless approved by Valve.

There are no legal or official statements which can further prove that this is legal in any way.

F. Ownership of Content and Services

All rights are reserved, except as expressly stated herein. The Content and Services is protected by copyright laws, international copyright treaties and conventions and other laws. Except as otherwise permitted under this Agreement (including any Subscription Terms or Rules of Use), or under applicable law notwithstanding these restrictions, you may not, in whole or in part, copy, photocopy, reproduce, publish, distribute, translate, reverse engineer, derive source code from, modify, disassemble, decompile, create derivative works based on, or remove any proprietary notices or labels from the Content and Services or any software accessed via Steam without the prior consent, in writing, of Valve.

You are entitled to use the Content and Services for your own personal use, but you are not entitled to: (i) sell, grant a security interest in or transfer reproductions of the Content and Services to other parties in any way, nor to rent, lease or license the Content and Services to others without the prior written consent of Valve, except to the extent expressly permitted elsewhere in this Agreement (including any Subscription Terms or Rules of Use); (ii) host or provide matchmaking services for the Content and Services or emulate or redirect the communication protocols used by Valve in any network feature of the Content and Services, through protocol emulation, tunneling, modifying or adding components to the Content and Services, use of a utility program or any other techniques now known or hereafter developed, for any purpose including, but not limited to network play over the Internet, network play utilizing commercial or non-commercial gaming networks or as part of content aggregation networks, websites or services, without the prior written consent of Valve; or (iii) exploit the Content and Services or any of its parts for any commercial purpose, except as expressly permitted elsewhere in this Agreement (including any Subscription Terms or Rules of Use).

whatever fuck it then, let the users buy all source games just to get rid of the Purple textures which by the way isn't noted on the steam game page.

Great fix page btw, couldn't get any better!

RaTcHeT302 (talkcontribs)

You should contact Valve's legal departement instead of whining like this.

Mirh (talkcontribs)

Just don't play in those servers then.

It's not a bug with the game.

Hawaii Beach (talkcontribs)

never stated that it was a bug??

Mirh (talkcontribs)

So it shouldn't have got a negative point or a dedicated fixbox in the first place imo

Hawaii Beach (talkcontribs)

not? is having purple textures all over your face is not negative? not only that, pcgamingwiki doesn't even mention that you can download the textures for free. i'd keep it negative

Mirh (talkcontribs)

It shouldn't concern us in the sense that it's a problem between the game (you) and the server.
Not something between you and the game.

As I said at most, we should mention it just because some noob may think his GPU smoked pot or something like that

Also, is this an issue only with Valve material or not? Because I remember I removed a info point saying this very thing

Marioysikax (talkcontribs)

Just want to input on this, even if the content hasn't been DMCA'd doesn't mean it's legal. As an exapmle, if you were doing drugs, just because you haven't been arrested doesn't make it legal either. There's tons of illegal material on the internet which most is easily accessible and some even so easily accessible that user may have no idea of legality of the content.

If those files were legal to distribute, then they would be included with the game in the first place so that users wouldn't have to deal with missing textures. Reason why users have to install those games to get the textures is that they are copyrighted material, having game installed is the easiest way to verify that user has actually bough the content and it's also easiest way to access those textures for the user as well as you only need to regularly install the game.

Hawaii Beach (talkcontribs)

never said Valve not doing a dmca thingy cuz it's not legal, everyone does this and Valve doesn't care.

Expack3 (talkcontribs)

"Everyone does this" is a flawed argument; just because everyone does it doesn't suddenly make something wrong into something right. Furthermore, Valve has been actively advertising both externally and internally that they have a flat employee hierarchy in place. If they don't outsource their legal issues to a law firm, Valve's lawyers may also be the people supporting or building Steam and/or Valve's other projects (games, Source 2, etc.), and vice-versa. There are some well-known side effects of this - and I'm confident you known at least one of them and how it relates to their seeming-laissez faire handling of this legal issue.

Also, as far as PCGamingWiki goes, we don't link to this kind of stuff unless it's explicitly allowed by the developers or rightsholders in some fashion, like being GPL'd, a universal or site-specific free-to-redistribute agreement, releasing the content under public domain, and so on.

Bottom line: if it isn't explicitly allowed, it's a waste of everyone's time trying to argue otherwise.

I have cleaned up the page to an acceptable degree. It may need grammar improvements as well as more information regarding the Mac edition. The developers are waiting for an OK from Valve to release for Linux and the page will likely need a large update then.
