Issues unresolved

No exclusive fullscreen

The Fullscreen mode of the game acts as a maximized borderless window, resulting in concerns among G-Sync monitor users.[22][23][24]
A possible solution for G-Sync users is to enable G-Sync for windowed and full screen mode in Nvidia Control Panel.[citation needed]
A possible fix is switching the Graphics API to DirectX 12 in the game settings.[25][citation needed]

Issues fixed

Game crashing

The game may crash on launch, resulting in the "Red Dead Redemption 2 on PC exited unexpectedly" error message.
Temporarily disable anti-virus software or add the game folder to its list of scan exclusions.[27]
A November 6, 2019 game update addresses the crashing related to anti-virus software.[26]
See the related Rockstar Games support articles.
Use Safe Mode to disable HDR[28]
  1. After the game fails to launch, choose the Rockstar Games Launcher option to start the game in Safe Mode.
  2. Choose to disable HDR if prompted, set the graphics settings (start with something conservative) and apply.
  3. Manually restart the game. Avoid using the restart option from the settings menu, as it will restart using Safe Mode and all settings will be reset again.
Possible workarounds exist for crashes on launch related to having set the Graphics API to DirectX 12.[29]
Set the Graphics API to Vulkan in the config file[30]
  1. Go to the configuration file(s) location.
  2. Open settings.xml in a text editor.
  3. Locate kSettingAPI_DX12 and change it to kSettingAPI_Vulkan
Alternatively, move the file from the folder to reset the game settings.
Install DirectX Graphics Tools on Windows 10[30][31]
  1. Use the taskbar search functionality to locate Manage optional features.
  2. In the newly opened window, click on Add a feature.
  3. Find Graphics Tools on the list, click on it and select Install.

Launcher crashing

Attempting to launch the game may result in the "Rockstar Launcher exited unexpectedly" error message.[32]
On Windows 10, make sure the system is updated to version 1903.[33][34][35]
Update BIOS at own risk
Updating the BIOS has been reported to have helped a number of AMD chipset users.[36][37][38][39]
Unintended interruptions and user errors in the process of BIOS flashing may render the computer unusable.[40]
A November 8, 2019 launcher update addresses issues related to AMD CPUs.[41]
Set audio output device to Nvidia High Definition Audio[42]
  1. On Windows 10, right-click the speaker icon in the tray on the taskbar and select Open Sound settings.
  2. Under Output, select the NVIDIA High Definition Audio device.
Only applies to Nvidia graphics cards.

"Unable to launch game"

Attempting to launch the game may result in the "Unable to launch game, please verify your game data" error message.[43]
A November 5, 2019 launcher update addresses the issue.[44]
As an alternative, temporarily disable all but default playback devices in the Sound Control Panel.[43]

Game stuttering

Multiple players have reported in-game stuttering related to high CPU usage.[45][46]
Manually reduce the number of CPU cores used by the game in the system[47]
  1. Open Task Manager.
  2. Click on the Details tab to see the list of running processes.
  3. Locate RDR2.exe
  4. Right-click it and select Set affinity.
  5. Deselect one or two of the cores (e.g. CPU 2 and CPU 3) and click OK.
Requires action after each game launch.
Use BES to reduce CPU use by the game[48][49]
  1. Download BES.
  2. Unpack the archive and run BES.exe
  3. Launch the game.
  4. Click on Target... and select RDR2.exe from the list.
  5. Click on Limit this (temporary) or Limit/Watch (persistent) and confirm by clicking on Yes.
  6. Move the slider below to put the limit at -10% or experiment with other values.
No installation required.
Use Process Lasso to reduce the number of CPU cores used by the game[47][50][51]
  1. Download and install Process Lasso.
  2. Launch the game and the app.
  3. Locate RDR2.exe on the list of running processes within the app.
  4. Right-click it and select CPU Limiter from the context menu.
  5. Set the rule values as follows:
    • When CPU use is: 92% (or 98%)
    • For a period of: seconds
    • Reduce by this many CPU cores: 2 (or 1)
    • For a period of: 1 seconds
  6. Click on Add rule and set by clicking OK.
Automatic limitation based on game behavior.
Installation is required.
Change graphics API to DirectX 12[52][citation needed]
  1. Go to the Settings menu in the game.
  2. Open the Graphics settings.
  3. Scroll down to the Advanced Graphics section.
  4. Toggle the Advanced Settings option to "Unlocked".
  5. Change the Graphics API setting to "DirectX 12".
  6. Apply the settings and restart the game.

Incorrect resolution at launch

The game may start at an incorrect resolution, resulting in out-of-screen elements and inability to reach the graphics settings.[53][54]
Use the -width and -height command line arguments[33]
  1. Go to Settings within the Rockstar Games Launcher.
  2. Click on Red Dead Redemption 2 under My installed games.
  3. Add -width 1920 -height 1080 as Launch arguments or change the width and height values as desired.
Only applies to Nvidia graphics cards.

Incorrect map display at 48:9

The in-game map might scale incorrectly at 48:9 multi-monitor resolutions.
Set Screen Type to Windowed Borderless in the Graphics settings[56]
