Key points
- It is highly recommended to set the Brightness Level in-game to 3 to get the most contrast. Anything higher overexposures the white level.
- Can only run stably on a single core:
- For European Director's Cut version (superior version), use Silent Hill 2 Widescreen Fix, or alternatively sh2proxy. It is recommended to use Widescreen Fix over sh2proxy.
- For North American version (inferior version), use Modern Compatibility Fix.
- The PC version adds improved flashlight lighting, the ability to save at any time during the game, swap weapons without opening the menu, and a movie gallery.
- The atmospheric fog and the shadowing are much simpler and less refined than the PlayStation 2 version.[1]
- Frame rate is locked to 30 FPS. See 60 FPS.

- There are two versions, the North American version and European Director's Cut version. If the title screen lacks "Director's Cut" on it, it's the North American version. Both versions include the extra scenario Born from a Wish along with an extra UFO ending.
Essential improvements
Silent Hill 2 Widescreen Fix
A D3D8 wrapper for the European Director's Cut version with some features from sh2proxy below, which adds:
- Widescreen and custom resolutions.
- Windowed mode.
- Fixes for anti-aliasing and processor affinity.
- Unlock the frame-rate to 60 FPS.
- Unstretched HUD and menus.
- Allows you to use higher resolutions without slowing down transition speeds.
- Remove cutscene letterboxes.
- Don't force close the game when you exit or else the graphic settings will revert. Always exit the game by pressing Escape, returning to the title screen and closing it from there.
- Not compatible with the Widescreen FMV pack as the FMVs are kept letterboxed and pillarboxed.
sh2proxy
A depreciated D3D8 wrapper with similar features to the Silent Hill 2 Widescreen Fix above, but has a few exclusive features:
- Built-in borderless fullscreen windowed function.
- FMVs are stretched, which allows for compatibility with the Widescreen FMV pack.
If you want 60 FPS and non-letterboxed cutscenes, the following must be installed separately:
- Cutscene letterbox fix
- 60 FPS (second method)
- HUD and menus are stretched.
Modern Compatibility Fix
Allows higher resolutions and easier anti aliasing application (at the cost of some glitches). Only use this for the North American version.

- Selectable resolutions do not go up all the way to 4K, enabling GeDoSaTo or Nvidia DSR does not affect the list. Selecting a higher resolution than your monitor's crashes the game.
Remastered corrected widescreen FMVs
All-in-one archive: Google Drive
- Don't use with Silent Hill 2 Widescreen Fix since the aspect ratio will be too narrow.
- Note: "ending.bik" may need to be renamed "end.bik", or you may receive a "insert a disc" message in the ending.
