Availability
- GOG.com version of the game runs the best on modern operating systems.
- Most versions of Fallout are censored where models of children have been replaced by adults. This can be fixed by various unofficial patches.[1]

Improvements
- Recommended to install outside the default Program Files folder, as it may cause save games to go missing.
- Fallout FIXT 5 patch compilation is highly recommended.
Patch compilation
Fallout FIXT 5
- Patch compilation which contains several essential patches:
- Simplest way to install the modern patches.
- Optional fan content.

Patches
Semi-Official 1.2 Patch
- Prerequisite for the Unofficial 1.3.5 Patch.
- Recommended over every version of Fallout, as it updates the 'official' Fallout 1.2.
- Includes children patch.
Unofficial 1.3.5 Patch
- Semi-Official 1.2 Patch must be installed first.
- Fixes virtually all remaining bugs.
Fallout1 High Resolution Patch v4.0.2
- Allows one to choose widescreen resolutions.

Sfall
- There is some confusion about Sfall for Fallout. No version of Sfall works or has been developed for Fallout, only for Fallout 2.
- A version called 'Timeslip Fallout Engine Tweaks v1.4' or
sfall1.7z
is buggy and does not work properly on Fallout.
- The developer Timeslip has stated: "There has never been a fallout 1 version of sfall. The mod that was available that shared the same name was not sfall in the fallout 2 sense, but mostly just a glorified fix for the black screen issues. This can now be accomplished more easily, and with less restrictions on which version of the fallout exe you need to use, with the resolution patch."[2]
Game data
Missing save games
- If the game is installed in the default directory, and saves are made as a non-administrator, the files will be saved to the AppData folder. This is because the program 'protects' the Program Files folder from non-administrators.[3] The GOG.com version does not have this problem.
