Video settings
Template:Video settings
- Ambient Occlusion (AO) includes high quality SMAA that is much easier on performance.[9]
- Having the AA option enabled in conjunction with AO causes visual issues and the transition effect between LoD levels to be abrupt.[9][10]
- Cutscenes and menus will still be limited to 30 or 60 FPS.
- Breaks some parts of the game and can make it impossible to progress without disabling the framerate unlocker.[11]
- May cause other physics bugs and/or unexpected behavior.

VR support
Issues unresolved
Display driver crash (white/frozen screen)
- Occasionally the game causes a driver crash/reset which it can not recover properly from.[3]
- Affects both AMD and Nvidia users, but Nvidia GeForce GTX 780 and 780 Ti cards are the worst affected with very small chance of being able to play the game at all even with community fixes.[12]
- A correct fix for AMD is to install the graphics drivers 17.5.2, albeit some users might still experience the issue.[13]
- A correct fix for Nvidia GeForce GTX 780 and 780 Ti users is to install the graphics driver 384.94, although some users on the games forum are still experiencing issues. [14]
- The game continues playing in the background so if you're in a save zone you can quick save your progress by clicking on Esc+↵ Enter+↵ Enter. You should hear a chime sound effect when the game have been saved successfully.
- Terminate the game using either Alt+F4 or Alt+Tab ↹ followed by terminating it through the Task Manager in Windows.
- Users can mitigate the issue in various ways. An aggregated list of what works can be found in the chapter What is the White Screen Issue? of this Tweak Guide.
Debug Mode: Menu cannot be opened using keyboard and mouse
- The debug menu requires a controller to be opened and navigated. This is because it is opened by using the keybinding for Evade + Shortcuts. But Evade don't have a keybinding on keyboards.[15]
Game crashes during ending E on the 21th death
- The game crashes once you die for the 21st time during the Shoot 'em Up level of ending E.[16]
- Only players trying to solo the ending are affected, as accepting help from other players turn you invincible.
- The issue was introduced in the PC patch released on 2017-04-28.
Issues fixed
Game does not launch properly
Certain things can cause the game to not launch properly, or only idle in the background without any activity.
This can be caused by various stuff, so be sure to test all methods:
An incompatible input device is installed on the system
- Certain input devices can cause the game to not launch properly on some systems (e.g. the Kensington Trackball and Nvidia Controller and related software).
Denuvo is having connection problems
- Occasionally Denuvo needs to phone home to retrieve a new valid hardware key for the game. If it fails the connection then
NieRAutomata.exe
will remain in the background of Windows and keep retrying for 5-15 minutes before Denuvo times out.[17]
The installation of FAR is corrupt
- FAR have seen a major chance in how it injects itself into the game. Having remnants of the old injection method side by side with the new injection method will cause issues.
White/black screen on launch
Crash on touch-capable systems
Crash when loading a savegame
Saves do not show up in the game
Saving does not work
Fullscreen is stretched from a lower resolution or have black borders
The game requests a stretched resolution to output the rendered framebuffer to. This means that native resolutions will output to the closest stretched resolution, downscaling the image in the process. The GPU/monitor will then either show the outputted image with black borders around it (scaling disabled) or upscale the downscaled image back to the native resolution (scaling enabled) causing noticeable scaling artifacts in the image from the process.
Cutscenes stutter
LOD popping
Run the game at screen refresh rate
Mouse cursor is visible when playing with a controller
Button prompts rapidly switch between KB/M and Gamepad
SLI is not working
- Not officially supported by Platinum Games nor NVIDIA.
- This is only required once, unless you perform a clean driver installation in the future.
- Does not work in windowed mode (including borderless windowed mode).
