Bottom Tooltip Erratic Movement

6
LukasThyWalls (talkcontribs)

I added an issue unresolved (https://www.pcgamingwiki.com/wiki/Tom_Clancy's_Splinter_Cell:_Pandora_Tomorrow#Bottom_Tooltip_Erratic_Movement) i found testing the game in several computers, without a proper solution. More in-depth info of the test i did here to not put everything in the actual page:

- One point to easily test this (although it happens in a lot of places) is in the first ladder in the sewers on the second level.

- At least Spanish version is affected, English version seems to shows less tooltips and it doesn't appear in the same spots and ways than the Spanish version. For example, in the test point declared above, in the English version the tooltip doesn't appear when you are freeze in the ladder, but in the Spanish version it does.

- Player and mouse (camera) movement seems to affect the erratic movement of the tooltip, very obvious with the camera movement in the test point.

- Recording with OBS to disk (to show the issue in a video) somehow fix it. However when you are streaming the game the issue is still there.

- Playing with my laptop with AC adapter plugged, the issue is there, but when using the battery mode it isn't.

- Looking these details i wrote, i tried to force on/off V-sync options and set CPU affinity without any change.

- Maybe original Splinter Cell is also affected (https://github.com/ThirteenAG/WidescreenFixesPack/issues/1302#issue-1659012275)

- ThirteenAG's Widescreen Fix (https://www.pcgamingwiki.com/wiki/Tom_Clancy's_Splinter_Cell:_Pandora_Tomorrow#Widescreen_resolution) doesn't affect this, as it happens with and without the fix.

- Original test i did for this are here https://github.com/ThirteenAG/WidescreenFixesPack/issues/1302#issuecomment-1528153046

To me could be a crack or/and dark performance thing to be the computers too powerful to the game. The crack is needed for the game as it uses Safedisc v3 and it would not work in Windows 10 with the original discs, and its english only (although with the Multi5 version everything works except this as the game was finishable).

Any ideas should be useful. Thanks!

I’ve ran into that problem before and the way to fix it is to limit the framerate to below 100FPS (I limit my game to 99FPS). The same issue occurs with the first Splinter Cell as well with any framerate above 100FPS.

LukasThyWalls (talkcontribs)

Thanks for the tip! i will try to test it soon to see if the that fix the issue and add it to the wiki.

Georgeli94 (talkcontribs)

Have you tested it yet? Just hoping to see this fix be officially done.

LukasThyWalls (talkcontribs)

Yes, about your tip for a fix, i think it doesn't work for me, but i'm still on it.

One problem I had is to reproduce the issue everytime. I reinstalled the game in the notebook i did the first testing and it didn't happened anymore like it does when i first tested, but sometimes happened, so i needed a way to reproduce it every time, and I found a way to reproduce it every time in two different computers: Meanwhile using the thermal vision in the point i talked before, the first ladder in the sewers on the second level. I had a new video too, but i don't know if i can upload it here like the gif i uploaded before.

I would like to do a little bit of more testing, using some different apps, but like i said, capping the FPS via the NVIDIA Panel Control didn't do anything to me, but i'm still suspicious if it really did something or nothing to the game.

LukasThyWalls (talkcontribs)

Hello. You were right, it was about the framerate going above 100 FPS.

I needed to use FRAPS to measure the FPS, because other apps or are much bloated or they simply didn't show the FPS for this game.

In my computer, in normal conditions the game runs between 60-90 FPS, but with the night, and much more, with the thermal googles the framerate goes to 110-125 and then the issues began to happen. That doesn't mean the issue can't happen without glasses, depends of what is the game doing in that moment, and what is your computer (that's because that sewer hole is good for testing that, because the game is only drawing Sam and the ladder, and the FPS sometimes goes above 100 FPS when my computer is pretty old).

The issue is I tried several things and any of them worked: Limiting the FPS in Nvidia Control Panel, did nothing for me, also forcing there V-Sync did nothing in this. I tried other things, but in the end, what fixed it was dgVoodoo2. I already used dgVoodoo2 in all computers, and I thought it was doing the issue with it too, but now, in this computer, I reinstalled using its last version, and suddenly it works. Without putting any V-Sync force or setting a FPS limit there. In fact I used the config bundled within ThirteenAG's Widescreen Fix, but a "default" one also put the FPS below 100 FPS (without any Forcing V-Sync option, or Limit FPS advanced option).

So, I think I screwed up somewhere testing this, I thought I was using DgVoodoo2 in some of my tests, but maybe I wasn't (although I normally keep the DgVoodoo2 watermark to be sure every time!). And dgVoodoo2 alone seems to fix it, now...

But maybe what happened is that in other computers, as this one is a bit old, dgVoodoo2 can't keep the FPS low, or something else. I'm not gonna test it again there, as with your experience and my tests seems the issue is that (In fact, I just saw the +120 FPS notes in the video section https://www.pcgamingwiki.com/wiki/Tom_Clancy's_Splinter_Cell:_Pandora_Tomorrow#Video and it seems this is another one related to that), but maybe other people with other computers much more powerful need something else to make it work properly (as explicit FPS limitation somehow, for example).

I will edit this article and the Splinter Cell one, extracting the 120 FPS notes and combining it with my issue, and I will create a full subsection about this to warn the issues to go above 100 FPS and tipping some fixes (mainly dgVoodoo2).

Thanks for your help!

Regarding the Ultimate Splinter Cell Collection

2
Reddeadelite (talkcontribs)

I couldn't find any information about the Ultimate Splinter Cell Collection, mentioned under #Availability. I /did/ find a Splinter Cell Ultimate Edition (https://www.blu-ray.com/Splinter-Cell-Ultimate-Collection-PC/464078/), containing the first five games. It's a little confusing, as the box says Edition, while it's listed on that website as Collection. I also found a listing on Amazon (https://www.amazon.com/Tom-Clancys-Splinter-Cell-Ultimate-DVD/dp/B00MOD66MM), but that seems a little more ephemeral than the blu-ray.com listing. Should the name on the wiki page be changed to Splinter Cell Ultimate Edition?

Thanks, I've made a few changes to the availability section.

Getting the game working for windows 10?

2
TINM (talkcontribs)

Is there any way to get the DRM off without straight-up pirating the game? I don't trust those sites and just want to just make the retail copy playable on windows 10. Any other possibilities?

Mirh (talkcontribs)

Yes there are. See here
