Key points
- The PC version adds the ability to save at any time during the game
- Greater resolution textures than PS2
- Key remapping implemented
- Sluggish and clunky camera/keyboard controls
Availability
- The first four Silent Hill games have never been released on digital distribution platforms for PC.
Issues and fixes
Silent Hill 3 is usually considered the best PC port out of the Silent Hill PlayStation 2 releases.
- Low resolution Depth of Field effect. Also, no options to crank it up or turn it off.
- If using anti aliasing (MSAA, at least), Depth of Field effect becomes corrupted (halos around objects).
- Rendering resolution (usually found under Inventory > Options > Configuration) is actually internal framebuffer resolution. Use it to match your display resolution.
- By default, the game creates savegames in its own folder. This can cause issues for users with non-elevated privileges. The workaround is to change the default save location by modifying the registry.
Field of View & Resolution
The field of view for your resolution can be changed in the already installed game as such[1]:
- Edit the disp.ini file (location can vary) to your desired resolution.
Example:
size=1920x1080 - Download this archive and extract its contents somewhere.
- Start the tool.
- Enter the correct FOV values.
Use these for 16:9 aspect ratios:
FOV=0,86
wFOV=1,15 - Start the game.
- Press * on your numpad when you are in the game and the FOV will be corrected according to your FOV values.
- After that you can close the tool.
- If the entered values aren't correct, you should probably mess around with them. The trick is to make the game not appear stretched or cropped.
Forcing Vertical Sync
Silent Hill 3 does support V-Sync, but can be forced either through your graphics card or by using D3D Overrider.
Controls
Xpadder works with Silent Hill 3, which some find better than keyboard controls in this game. A pre-made profile can be found here. The game also supports directinput controllers.
