This is an issue with retail and GOG versions. The game uses SafeDisc, which was disabled by Microsoft Windows update KB3086255.
To be able to run the game you either have to manually uninstall this update (not reccomended) or enable the service before you start
the game and disable it afterwards by executing following commands in your command line:
