- it wasn't until 2013.2 that they supported 8 channels
- and it wasn't until 2013.1 that they switched to XAudio2 (followed by WASAPI in 2015.1.2)
- you would pretty darn assume that even before that they supported something other than just directsound (and I guess you could point out 2012 Dishonored.exe does directly reference the MMDeviceEnumerator CLSID) yet if I check file

from the few code leaks of the day nothing else is noted up to those releases - presumably they didn't even support surround before 2008 (yet, I guess this absolute lateness was their salvation, given they could implement multi-channel directsound?)
- FWIW XAudio2 >2.7 came in 2015.1.7 (I wonder if this couldn't be related to crytek dropping it)
