Crashes/freezes after the mission
There is a common issue, that seems to be introduced with Nvidia's driver v 353.62.[2]
Enable SLI (even if you don't use more than 1 graphics card)[2]
- Launch the game's configuration tool.
- Check Override SLI.
- Check Enable SLI.
Cap the framerate with external software such as MSI Afterburner[2]
Set the shader quality to High (Shader Model 2.0)[2]
- If everything else fails, you can play through individual levels using a profile that has all missions unlocked.[3]
Game not Booting
Ensure your graphics card supports Pixel Shader 2.0[citation needed]
Error message: missing "d3x9_27.dll"[citation needed]
SecuROM errors[citation needed]
- If you're experiencing problems with SecuROM errors, try running the game in Windows 2000 Compatibility mode. To do so:
- Right click on the shortcut on your desktop.
- Click properties then click on the Compatibility tab.
- Check the box "Run this program in Compatibility mode for:" and select Windows 2000.
Install update[citation needed]
Dual-monitor fix[citation needed]
- If you have 2 monitors connected, disable one and try again.
Increased brightness when in first person mode
Disable post-processing in the settings[citation needed]
- Doing so will disable Depth of Field and the "Color Grading" effect which contributes significantly to the mood of many environments.
Crashes
CTD Opera House Mission[citation needed]
- For the Curtains Down mission on Windows XP, turn sound hardware acceleration down (basic acceleration) or off (no acceleration). Down works for some; others need it off entirely.
- Go to Start > Run > Type
dxdiag .
- Click on the 'Sound' tab, and take the hardware sound acceleration down to the bottom.
- Not possible on Windows Vista. The only method that seems to work is disabling your sound temporarily for that mission.
Installation Errors

CRC or cyclic redundancy error during installation
- This error is often due to a faulty or damaged DVD. The damage may or may not be visible to the naked eye.
Download discspeed and slow your DVD drive down before installing[citation needed]
Take your DVD to a video rental store and ask how much they charge for a laser resurface/clean[citation needed]
Copy the DVD contents to your hard drive and run setup.exe from there as per these instructions[citation needed]
Buff the CD yourself with Brasso[citation needed]
Please insert original CD
Reinstall DVD drive[citation needed]
- Right click 'My Computer' > Click 'Manage'.
- Select 'Device Manager'.
- Expand 'Disk Drives' in the device manager tree.
- Right click your DVD drive > Click 'Uninstall' (Take any disk out first).
- Reboot your computer and let Windows 'Find new hardware' and reinstall the DVD drive.
Update DVD drive firmware through the manufacturer's site[citation needed]
- When doing this, follow instructions very carefully. Failing to do so may leave you with a non-working drive.
