Editing the game's .INI file to add the line
KeepRes =1
will cause the game to run in widescreen. The name of the location of the file is different depending on the version of the game. Video Mode refers to the horizontal window size, and
Note that Civilization III doesn't support the game area being resized after the game is launched - doing so causes graphic corruption (and may crash the game.) With that in mind, it is technically possible to add a border.
Widescreen support
Although the game is installed at a fixed resolution in 4:3 format, the game is capable of running in widescreen at modern resolutions. Editing the game's .INI file to add the line KeepRes =1
will cause the game to run in widescreen. The name of the location of the file is different depending on the version of the game. If you have Conquests or Complete installed, the file will be called conquests.ini and will be stored in the Conquests folder inside the game's folder. For Steam users, this will be C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\SteamApps\common\Sid Meier's Civilization III Complete\Conquests
.
Compatibility settings
Issues with the game may be corrected with compatibility settings. The Steam shortcut, however, does not allow this. To run the Steam version with compatibility settings, go to C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\SteamApps\common\Sid Meier's Civilization III Complete\Conquests
and right click on Civ3Conquests.exe
. Select properties and set the compatibility settings.
