Hey Andy,

Just thought I'd let you know my exams are over, so I plan to edit the wiki more frequently. I noticed you expanded the DayZ page; I'll take a look and see if there's any additional content I can add as well as continuing the other pages I was working on before.

Regards,

David

Andytizer (talkcontribs)

Hi no problem, thanks for all the hard work :).

Just a note about the Low end gaming list- I am working on a solution using Semantic Media Wiki to produce better game lists dynamically. Will be worth waiting a bit before adding anything more to that list.

Hungry eyes (talkcontribs)

Hey, Just a quick note to let you know I'll be inactive until the 17th, with exams and work. I should be on to edit more often after that.

Andytizer (talkcontribs)

Thanks for letting me know!

In terms of activity, I think it will be quite important to get on top of Steam summer sale daily deals, which cycle at 6pm every day. Focusing on those specific games which are in high demand for a short period will help draw more traffic.

Rumours are that it will happen either this Thursday (my bet) or the Thursday afterwards.

This is quite different to the spam we were getting before- Russian spam, trying for backlinks to their sites? Thanks for pointing it out.

{{DISPLAYTITLE}} function? / Standalone expansion policy

4
Hungry eyes (talkcontribs)

Hey,

Just a quick thought - could we add a DISPLAYTITLE function which allows for non-standard page titles? Would be useful for games such as http://pcgamingwiki.com/wiki/X3_:_Terran_Conflict .

EDIT: Secondly, what is our current policy on standalone expansions? Do we give them their own page or treat them like normal expansion packs? - Was thinking about Sins of a Solar Empire: Rebellion, as well as the DoW II expansions.

Andytizer (talkcontribs)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/X%C2%B3:_Terran_Conflict - this is how Wikipedia handles the game title - how do you propose we can do it using a template? If you can make a mockup we can decide whether it is the right move.

Standalone expansions should only have their own page if their fixes/paths/requirements are significantly different from the base game, otherwise use the base game title.

Masked Turk (talkcontribs)

Hi all. {{DISPLAYTITLE:whatever}} will let you change the title of an article; it's a built in mediawiki function.

However, by default it will only let you change the capitalisation. To change the actual characters of the title, Andy needs to set $wgRestrictDisplayTitle to true in LocalSettings.php.

(I'm assuming $wgAllowDisplayTitle is already set to true)

Hungry eyes (talkcontribs)

Yeah Jan told me that superscript characters are currently allowed under the MediaWiki software, however, this would allow us to have underscores and pages with lowercase first letters

Hungry eyes (talkcontribs)

Hey, I've updated the cleanup template to match the one used for stub articles (e.g. http://pcgamingwiki.com/wiki/A2_Racer)

I've also added all the articles I can find that need cleanup through the template to this category: http://pcgamingwiki.com/wiki/Category:Pages_marked_for_cleanup

The criteria I have used and made clear on the category and template pages is that articles which require modification of existing content to match the sample article layout, or the addition of a basic template are included.

Andytizer (talkcontribs)

Huge thanks for the work :) I've directed Masked_Turk to look at a display issue with the cleanup template.

Problems with the new sys req template

1
Newmansan (talkcontribs)

2 things I noticed for the new system reqs template.

First, it's not collapsible.

Second, the vram entry just assumes mb. This becomes a problem when the recommended specs as for 1gb of vram.

That's it.

Langbar template: ideas and extension requests

23
Masked Turk (talkcontribs)

Hi Andy,

I've done some thinking about the language selector template, and essentially come up with two methods of making it work right (assuming we're working by the subpage method of translations of Article and /Article/Polski)

1. Check if each language's translation page exists

This is probably the more convoluted method, but doesn't require any extensions or anything. Essentially, I create a template that contains instances of another template for each language that we want, and if the template for that language finds that Article/SubArticleWithThatLanguageName exists, it displays.

This is the method that erepublik uses. It does work, in the end, so idk. It shouldn't be that hard to sort out.

2. Use extensions to find an article's translation subpages

The other method would result in (I'm estimating) quite a bit less code, but would require two simple parser extensions that aren't on this wiki yet:

The first gives us the ability to list subpages of an article (i.e. to find all the translations of an article). The second gives us the ability to manipulate the array that the first extension produces, and format each subpage translation for the template.

Advantages? We wouldn't have to manually add each language to some back-end template, and it'd be cleaner code. If you can be arsed, I think this would be the better option, and tbh these extensions could be useful in a bunch of other templates :) Just a thought!

Cheers, JB

Andytizer (talkcontribs)

Discussing this with JRWR at the moment, will try to finish this tonight or tomorrow.

Andytizer (talkcontribs)
Masked Turk (talkcontribs)
) I'll get to work shortly.
Andytizer (talkcontribs)

There is some kind of incompability between Array and the Vector extension (it does some funky enhancements to the skin). For now Array is disabled, will experiement a bit more later. Will let you know as soon as it's stable.

Andytizer (talkcontribs)

I think I fixed this now, Array had been loaded after Vector, and is working.

Masked Turk (talkcontribs)

Great, thanks. I was wondering where it had gone tbh :P

Masked Turk (talkcontribs)

These extensions have worked like a charm in my template: User:Masked_Turk/Sandbox/Langbar

{{Langbar}}

It'll seek out direct subpages and display them in list-form. I just need feedback on design and styling now that the functionality is all there.

Andytizer (talkcontribs)

Very nice :). I'd like to implement this straight away. It looks amazing :). Other solutions I have investigated have been much more complicated, involving interwikis or bots to maintain the subpage links, etc. so this is really a godsend.

In terms of style, I have disabled the background hover because I don't think it quite looks right. I also think a character seperator like '·' works better than | which takes too much vertical space.

I have tried to implement the {{Langbar|main}} on the Home page. I have also implemented the Polski page: Home/Polski, but it's not showing up on the main page. Can you take a look please?

Masked Turk (talkcontribs)

Unfortunately it seems that Extension:Subpage_Fun does not recognise the main article's sub-pages, which means we'll probably have to use a different method for the main article's English page: sorry about that.

I've altered the stylings to your description as best I can, can you check it's as you imagined?

Andytizer (talkcontribs)

If it's just the one-off, then we could simply create a custom table to fit on the Home page.

Andytizer (talkcontribs)

Another thought is about category translation - what's the best way to handle this? I'm assuming it'll function in the same way as pages, so I can create Game/Polski and put the Langbar in the category page. Then this will display the game pages written in Polish.

Masked Turk (talkcontribs)

You just reminded me about categories, so I've added Category:Articles with translations and [[:{{{language name}}} translations]] to the relevant parts of the template.

Regarding category pages... hmm, the template looks for subpages of the article it's in, so if you put {{Langbar|main}} in Category:Games, the template will show the link to the Polish version of the category page. I could amend the template to categorise Polish (etc.) translations in Category:Games/Polski, which would achieve what I think you're after?

Andytizer (talkcontribs)

Yes that would help thank you :).

Andytizer (talkcontribs)

Thanks that would be very helpful.

Masked Turk (talkcontribs)

Right, done that. Problem #2 with the extension is that it doesn't seem to notice subpages in Category:, Template: etc. either. Unless I'm doing it wrong. I've asked the extension creator over at mediawiki.

For now though, workaround: the category translations appear as sub-categories on the page: see Category:Games for e.g.

Andytizer (talkcontribs)

Let's wait for a response - it must be a switch to allow for these namespaces. If you don't hear anything back in a couple of days we can do a workaround.

Masked Turk (talkcontribs)

Right, I *think* I have a fix.

Delve into LocalSettings.php and append the following line to the end of the file:

$wgNamespacesWithSubpages = array_fill(0, 500, true); //enables subpages for all articles, so the extension works!
Andytizer (talkcontribs)

I've added this in now, let me know if it works!

Masked Turk (talkcontribs)

See for yourself ^_^ - Just going about removing the pl from the list, through the ingenious use of regular expression commands. Shouldn't take long.

Masked Turk (talkcontribs)
Andytizer (talkcontribs)

Great, works well on the home screen. It doesn't appear to be working on the category page though? http://pcgamingwiki.com/wiki/Category:Game

Is there any way to have the full list of languages displayed whether it is Home or Home/Polski? Is there an alternative to a link for 'Return to the English language article'?

Masked Turk (talkcontribs)
  1. Category fixed. Forgot to add the : for categories, so it added them to the categories instead of displaying them as links :P
  2. Show list of langs in subpages: Sorted. Template will link other langs if available, otherwise will link back to route article. Took quite a bit of rearrangement :P

Graphics card article

2
1R0N W00K13 (talkcontribs)

Hi Andy,

I recommend we move 'Graphics Card (GPU)' to simply 'Graphics Card', as the two terms are not technically the same thing, with GPU redirecting to the page instead. This would mean modifying the beginners guide template too, am I OK to do this?

David

Andytizer (talkcontribs)

Happy for this to happen. The main reason for me to add in the abbreviations is due to search engine optimisation. However, if the abbreviation is mentioned at the beginning of the article (or a little bit of disambiguation in terms of difference between GPU and graphics card) then that will work fine too.

Be aware that hungry_eyes and Masked_Turk are working on redoing the entire 'Beginner's Guide' on the site, including that template.

Hungry eyes (talkcontribs)

Hey Andy, Had a fair amount to ask you about etc so thought I'd post it here before I forget.

  1. I swapped "Hackable" in the Video Settings template for a wrench icon which is now visible on all pages that use the template. Could you tell me what you think of it - I was trying to make it so what when you hover over it it says "Hackable", but that is only possible if you have it linking to the image page, which is undesirable.
  2. I have two links I tried to post on Re-Volt which I have tested as safe and pretty integral to parts of the article, but cannot post due to the Wiki's in-built spam filter (these being z8.invisionfree.com/RRR_Racing_Forum/index.php? and z3.invisionfree.com/Our_ReVolt_Pub/index.php?showtopic=1357). Is it possible to override this?
  3. I found an issue some users are experiencing to add to the Mafia: The City of Lost Heaven page, but didn't know whether to post it or not, as it seems the only solution is to make use of a No-CD crack (http://web.archive.org/web/20100821085751/http://forums.steampowered.com:80/forums/showthread.php?t=1397631) - could you clarify whether I should post it or not?

Thanks, Tom

Andytizer (talkcontribs)

1. Love the new icon - it's a perfect fit. What I would like is to have a single column (no 'Hackable' column) and for each to have a choice of either Tick-native Hack-hackable and Cross-no. When I have time I will work on this (and also I'm sure we can work the alt hover text in) but I'm pretty busy until Wednesday/Thursday with work stuff, or if you can get your guy to tweak it, it would be amazing :).

2. I'll talk to JRWR about the spam filter, I'm also having problems. You can put the references and links in as free-text for the moment as I have done.

3. I'm interested in starting a dialogue on how to approach No-CD cracks. I am also interested in specific DRM cracks like GFWL. The biggest concern is legal threats and takedowns. I'll post up on the general Forum about this. Edit: posted here Thread:PCGamingWiki:Forum/DRM and GFWL removal information

Hungry eyes (talkcontribs)

1. So would the single column have space for two ticks? One for whether its native and one for whether its hackable? Or are we thinking merging the two columns because if its hackable then its available for that game? 2. Ok thanks 3. Commented

Andytizer (talkcontribs)

1. Yes just 1 column, 1 tick/cross/hackicon for each item - we only need to know if AA is possible or not. Will make it much easier to scan, and additional info can go in the notes, and the notes could link to the relevant in-page hack.

Hungry eyes (talkcontribs)

Had a look myself, but looks like its more than the one template that needs editing. I can ask Jan to take a look.

Andytizer (talkcontribs)

I've figured out how to use the whitelist MediaWiki:Spam-whitelist to add more items in. Your forum links should work now, and any future whitelist stuff just ask me.

Other DRM (Tages, SecuROM, etc.)

2
1R0N W00K13 (talkcontribs)

Hey Andy,

If you aren't already aware of this site it's a good source for information on which Steam games carry what DRM when it comes to software like TAGES, etc.

http://steamdrm.flibitijibibo.com/the-big-drm-list/

Pretty much just lists the DRM of every steam game.

Regards,

David

Andytizer (talkcontribs)

Thanks I am aware of this list, very comprehensive but not user-editable. I've spoken to the owner, and I'll be referring to it closely when I'm designing the new availability/DRM table.
