Patches

Although the last official patch (v1.1) was released on 16th September 1999, the community has created an suitable fan patch, which is generally updated every fortnight.[1]

Official Patches

  • Patch 0916 was one of two official patches released for Re-Volt by Acclaim. It updated the game to v1.10, and allowed a doubling in the size of exported editor tracks, as well as permitting the use of custom tracks in multiplayer.
  • Patch 1207 was released on December 7, 1999, and was the last official patch for the game. It disabled the CD check and included on a 3D sounds option, as well as support for *.ace files, and support for the Rooftops track installed separately. This patch fixed some bugs found in the original version, in addition of adding the ability to host and join custom races online (just like patch 0916) and inserting -sli as a command line arguments for the game.

v1.2 (Fan Patch)

Re-Volt (v1.2) is a fan patch which aims to develop a more fully featured version of the game, bringing it up to modern standards and introducing the most popular fan features. It is also fully compatible with modern version of Windows, including XP, Vista and 7. The patch's fan developers have suggested the final release version will be produced by the end of 2012.

Additional features:

  • Full support for all NT versions of Windows, including XP, Vista and 7
  • Support for Wine on Linux and Mac[2]
  • Wide screen and multi-monitor support
  • Anisotropic texture filtering, improved display and font style
  • Support for international keyboard layouts
  • New language introduced (Dutch)
  • New content and game modes
  • Optimisations and bug fixes.

Detailed information on all additional features can be found here. There is also a list of planned future additions.

Mods And Utilities

Custom Cars and Tracks

Custom cars and tracks are a popular modification for Re-Volt, with the former often introducing real-life vehicles of varying quality to the game, and the latter community created tracks in addition to the standard ones. A popular source for both cars and tracks is Re-Volt Zone Tracks.

Phoenix R3

Phoenix R3 is a program which allows the creation of full custom tracks. Its features provide the ability to make tracks of comparable quality to those in the original release, and gives the player more freedom than was offered in the original release.

Phoenix R3 also includes a number of additional features, including but not limited to:

  • Windows Vista and 7 support
  • Improved game load time
  • Main Re-Volt GFX, SFX and models swap
  • Raised texture limit per track
  • MP3 player - custom song for each track
  • Adjustable texture resolution

In order to obtain the mod and its license of use, various conditions must be met:

  • Join the #revolt IRC channel @irc-hispano.org
  • Be an active member on the Re-Volt Racing Forum with a ranking of at least 2
  • Make a full custom track and/or a good tutorial for the site
  • Prove that you own an original copy of Re-Volt

WolfR4

WolfR4 is a custom launcher tool currently under active development, and similar in premise to Phoenix R3, but with expanded capabilities (however it should be noted it only supports patch 1207)[3].

WolfR4 is a tool with numerous features, which can be viewed in greater detail here, however, a list of its most prominent aspects is as follows:

  • Numerous bug fixes
  • Provides easy access to many commonly used settings (number of laps, activate pickup etc.)
  • Extends some existing Re-Volt features (up to 12 players in online lobby race, increase the Battle Tag time etc.)
  • Adds new modes not available in the original release (ghost car in time trial, race against 30 AI opponents, No car/car collision mode etc.)
  • Provides an easy access to all command line options
  • Permits the creation of full custom tracks
  • Allows global custom (custom championships, Re-Volt Mods, HUD or frontend replacement, etc.)
  • Allows user tracks that have been designed for it to be raced in reverse mode
  • Allows user stunt and battle tag tracks

Anyone is able to download the mod for free on its official project page.

RVHouse

Re-Volt House (shortened to RVHouse) is an open source multiplayer game lobby and chat tool for Re-Volt, developed after the shutdown of the official MSN Gaming Zone; allowing community members to chat and organise races. It is possible to run this tool on Linux[4].

Other Popular Mods

  • FutureCars is a Re-Volt mod including custom cars and tracks which replaces existing Re-Volt gameplay with high speed, "ultra grav" vehicles, reaching in-game speeds of up to 100 mph. The mod currently includes seven custom tracks, and 20 unique vehicles.

Unresolved Issues - Fan Patch (v1.2)

Re-Volt v1.2 has a number of unresolved issues currently being worked on by fans. Outlined below is a basic listing of the largest of these issues, but further information can be found here under 'Known Bugs'.

Crashing and Freezing

A number of situations will currently cause the game to crash, none of which have yet been resolved. Currently, these include:

  • Crashing during multiplayer
  • Rare freeze due to propagation of bad data over the internet
  • Freeze resulting from incompatibility of some Antivirus programs with Miles Sound System
  • Rare instances of PC restarting after reaching a menu screen

Graphical Glitches

Graphical glitches are common in v1.2. A basic listing of unresolved issues is as follows:

  • Improper rendering of vertex colors (dev mode only)
  • Rare artifacts with cloud rendering
  • Lines and glitches with graphics card forced anti-aliasing turned on
  • Screen flickering when attempting to change display mode after using the Print Screen button
  • Visible artifacts in the rear-view camera (known as the blue triangle bug)
  • Visible texture seams in-between ploygons
  • Transparent areas displayed incorrectly in Print Screen shots
  • No objects in frontend after exiting a track with Objects Edit Mode
  • Objects clipped when viewed at a specific angle

Multiplayer

There are a number of issues with the game's multiplayer mode, including crashing and object inconsistencies, as well as bad syncing and bad starts, often preceded by a hang at the loading screen. Saving replays also often results in a bug. There is currently no known fix for any of these issues.

Other Issues

  • Bomb fuse disappears after hitting a clone pickup
  • Trouble restoring after Alt+Tab in Windows Vista or 7
  • Issue with configuring certain joystick controllers
  • Unable to read certain game states if Caps Lock is on
  • Multithreading inconsistencies during loading

Video Settings

Original Game (v1.1)

The following lists settings available for the original game, which lacked many modern graphical settings such as anti-aliasing and anisotropic filtering, as well as widescreen. Template:VideoSettings

Fan Patch (v1.2)

The following lists settings available for the updated v1.2 fan patch version of Re-Volt.[5] Template:VideoSettings

Cheats

Cheat Codes

The user should enter the following codes on the name wheel. Once entered they can return to the wheel and input their proper name and the cheat will remain.

Code Effect
CARNIVAL All Cars
CHANGELING Change car mid-race
DRINKME Small cars
JOKER Opponents cars appear with the same model as yours in multiplayer mode
MAKEITGOOD Activate in-game editors
SADIST Select weapons in-game (Right shift)
TRACKER All tracks
TVTIME Enables F5 and F6 cameras
URCO UFO selectable

Vehicle Dynamics

If the user heads to Acclaim/ReVolt/cars and then enters any sub-folder with a car in it, they are able to edit the vehicle parameters in the 'Parameters.txt' file. This allows the user to change the top speed, acceleration, steering rate and wheel size, as well as detailed vehicle dynamics settings, effectively allowing the user to 'tune' the vehicle to his/her liking.

Controller Support

Both the original version and v1.2 support the use of controllers. However, many modern controllers such as the Xbox 360 Controller for Windows do not function correctly in-game.

System requirements

The following system requirements are for the basic game. The fan patch version uses the same system requirements, although it is compatible with more modern versions of Windows. Template:System Requirements

Mac OS X & Linux

With use of the v1.2 patch, it is now possible to play Re-Volt in Mac OS X and Linux using Wine[6]. It has also been ported to Mac using its own wineskin.[7] Original versions of Re-Volt are playable using Wine, but this leads to extended loading times and other general gameplay issues.

Additional help for running the game on Linux is available here.
