L.A. Noire is a detective game set to happen in late 1940s Los Angeles. The player plays as Cole Phelps, a Los Angeles Police Department Officer, and later in game, a Detective.
Version Differences and Updates
Despite having a buggy launch, Rockstar and the developer have been steadily releasing patches in effort to fix issues, bugs, and to improve performance of the game.
Only the Steam version of L.A. Noire includes Steamworks support. Of the features available to developers through Steamworks, L.A. Noire only makes use of achievements.
Due to the game being registered under Steam, L.A. Noire is automatically updated to the latest version. List of product updates are available from Steam's website. [1]
Save Game Data
L.A. Noire Save Game Manager is an utility developed by ReanimationXP. It's a program which allows the manual creation of save points during a mission. This allows one to create save games during a mission, and to reload part-way through a mission. This allows one to attempt different dialogue options without restarting the mission completely.[2]
Issues and Fixes
The L.A. Noire is a poorly optimized game, similar to that of Rockstar's other games for the Microsoft Windows released in the past, such as the Grand Theft Auto IV. This has been improved through patches but L.A. Noire still suffers from several different issues. While the publisher and the developer are working to fix the most immediate issues, there are ways circumvent some of the widely known problems.
Before trying to circumvent any issue or issues you might have, please check that you've updated the game to the latest version publicly available. This might fix your problems, and is going to prevent the appearance of new ones, which might arise after following the guide below.
Freezing Title Screen
The L.A. Noire for Microsoft Windows is known to freeze at title screen during synchronization process, or immediately after camera moves away from the L.A. Noire neon sign. There are several possible reasons for this.
- Anti-Virus Related Issues
We are looking into an issue involving Norton flagging some L.A. Noire files as viruses. If you are experiencing this issue, please uninstall L.A. Noire completely and then update your virus definitions. Then re-install L.A. Noire and disable the anti-virus software, if needed.[3]
The issue may be related to antivirus software removing or quarantining the ypatcher.exe and lanoire.exe executables, which is needed during the synchronization process.
- .NET Framework 3.5/C++ not installed
Ensure that you have the latest versions of .NET Framework, C++ Runtime Libraries, and DirectX Components installed. [4]
- Firewalls or inability to connect to the Internet
Also be sure that your firewall is disabled or contains an exception for L.A. Noire, so that the game can connect to the internet.
- Compatibility options set incorrectly on Steam
Make sure that Steam is not set to use Compatibility features.
- Browse to your Steam installation (Usually C:\Program Files\Steam\)
- Right click on Steam.exe, choose Properties.
- Click on the Compatibility tab.
- Uncheck any boxes that are checked, and click Apply.
- Then, click the "Show settings for all users" button.
- Again, make sure none of these boxes are checked, and click Ok.
- Click Ok to close any open dialog boxes.
- Double click on Steam.exe to launch Steam.
Error Patching: Error Binary Patching File
- Navigate to
C:\Program Files\Rockstar Games\L.A. Noire
- Remove any file with a .patched extension
- Remove
Social Club v1.0.5.0 Setup.exe
- Run
Patch_2382_02393_1.exe
- Press Update
- Start Game via launcher
- If the same thing happens, uninstall and re-install the full game and attempt to patch. If the same problem happens, repeat steps 1-6 above after consulting the tips below.
Slowdown, Lag, or Frame-Rate Issues
- Run the
LANLauncher.exe
. - Click Options
- Enter "-str" and/or "-npd" and/or "+jobs_numThreads 0" (without quotes, just the dash and the text with a space in between each command) in the command line field for single threaded renderer, which may improve performance or compatibility on some systems.
Crash-to-desktop After Launch in Windows 8
- Download this hotfix
- Extract the .rar file to Steam\SteamApps\common\l.a.noire
- Update Rockstar Social Club to the latest version [1]
- Launch the game
Endless Launcher Loop/Crash After Re-running Setup
In Windows Vista/Windows 7, it may be necessary to turn off UAC (User Account Control) and/or run Steam as an Administrator. Running game in off-line mode also may help.
Turn off UAC
- Open Control Panel
- Select User Accounts
- Select 'Change User Account Control Settings'
- Change the slider to Never Notify
For further information on User Account Control (UAC) configuration, see: UAC page in Microsoft's website.
Run Steam as an Administrator
- Locate the Steam Shortcut on your desktop or within your start menu.
- Right Click on the shortcut and select 'Run as Administrator'
Main Menu missing in the Steam version of L.A. Noire
- Close and exit Steam.
- Navigate to:
C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\la noire
- Delete the file labelled
Cases
- Re-launch steam
- Select 'Library' and right click on 'L.A. Noire: The Complete Edition'
- Select Properties' followed by the 'Local Files' tab.
- Select 'Verify Integrity of Game Cache...'
- Once verifying has finished, run 'Defragment Cache Files'
- After defragmenting is complete, also defragment your hard drive.
- Run the game.
NOTE: Also ensure that your C++, .NET, and DirectX packages are updated:
Alternative Fix
- Try launching L.A. Noire from the main
LANoire.exe
rather thanLANLauncher.exe
. - Make sure the game is booting to a native resolution by changing the settings in the launcher Options.
- Try adding
"-windowed"
into the command line field in the options menu of the launcher. - Right-click on Steam and Run as Admin, then once Steam is open run
LANoire.exe
- Run the game in a simple resolution such as 256 color and 640 resolution
- Run both the
LANLauncher.exe
and theLANoire.exe
in compatibility mode for a different version of Windows by right-clicking the files and choosing properties, then compatibility. Also put a checkmark in the "Run as Administrator" boxes.
NOTE: If you are running dual monitors or an unconventional display set-up, try running using only one monitor.
Game Freezes
For Windows 7 64-bit, the game locks up as soon as the synchronization (refresh) symbol shows up, which is right after the Team Bondi logo. This is because the game is incompatible with the system's copy of .Net 3.5. This is also why the .Net installer provided won't run. To fix this:
- Go to Programs and Features.
- Select Turn Windows Features On or Off
- UNCHECK Microsoft Framework 3.5.1
- Click OK. .Net 3.5 will be disabled and the user must restart.
- On next reboot, go back and CHECK Microsoft Framework 3.5.1. This will reinstall .Net 3.5 and correct the issue.
If this does not work, run the .Net framework clean-up tool then repeat the above steps.
Nvidia Video Driver Crashes
On some setups, including Windows 7 with an Nvidia graphics card, the game may crash frequently in DX11 mode. You may receive a notice in the notification area stating that the video driver has stopped working and has been recovered. If this happens, try playing in DX9 mode.
Unable to Drive/Control Cars
With certain controllers connected to the PC (e.g. Wheel or Flight pedals) a bug can occur whereby even with controller set to disabled in the game menus the game still tries to accept controller input for some game controls and ignores keyboard input. Most notably this occurs when trying to drive cars. You will be unable to drive forward or backward as long as the problem controller is plugged in to the PC.
Force controller Detection To Be a Default USB Device
- Open the game launcher.
- Click Options.
- At the bottom where it says "Command Line" add -joysticktype 1
- Click OK.
Can't Login to Rockstar Social Club In-Game
You may have a Social Club account and can successfully login to it on the Website. However, logging on to it via the in-game overlay may result in errors such as "Invalid E-Mail or Password".
To fix this, simply download and install the latest version of the L.A. Noire Social Club application located in this article.
This fix should also resolve similar issues within Max Payne 3.
Yellow Cab Bug
- Yellow Cab bugs out in White Shoe Murder
- Drive to the corner of 7th and Garland. The driver will be standing on his cab, preventing the dispatch from updating you.
System Requirements
Problematic hardware configurations
Following graphics cards are known to have problems with the L.A. Noire:
- Any graphics card with less than 256 MB per GPU
- ATI Radeon HD 5570 1024 MB
- ATI Radeon HD 3870 512 MB AGP Pro
- Nvidia GeForce 8600 GT 512 MB AGP Pro
Installation of the game may not work to hard drives formatted using FAT32. This problem occurs in Steam when the progress of the download indefinitely "suspends" around the 90% point. Recommended course of action is to relocate your installation to an alternatively formatted drive. NTFS is recommended partition type.
Reinstallation might be required of the entire Steam program to an alternatively formatted drive. [5] However current Steam beta version allows installation of most games and applications to any directory and partition. [6]
List of launch parameters
You can supply launch parameters to L.A. Noire for example in a situation were you're running into compatibility problems, or if you're having serious performance issues. These may help you debug the issue, and thus resolve the problem.
To input launch parameters you have to open the launcher of the game, access the Options menu. There you can write the parameters into the Command Line field of the launcher. You might have to start the game manually using LANLauncher.exe
located inside the game folder to see the launcher. It's noteworthy that Steam always starts the game using LANLauncher.exe
.
Command | Notes |
