The issue appears to be something to do with graphics though exactly what is unknown (at least to me at time of writing). The fix for this is to Alt+Tab to desktop whilst the the game loads. Age of Empires Online is a free to play strategy game from Robot Entertainment and Gas Powered Games. It succeeds from titles such as Age of Empires III (2005) although the art style and gameplay are fairly different. This game requires a constant internet connection, and will immediately disconnect and kick the player from the game if there is a break in connection, even if playing a single-player mission.
