- The game separates the internal render resolution from the display resolution. To change the internal render resolution, use the Render mode option in the display settings.
Change the internal render resolution of the game[6]
|
- Launch the game and navigate to Display Settings (Options -> Screen).
- Change Render mode according to the below list:
- Low - 1280x720 (HD Ready)
- Medium - 1920x1080 (Full HD)
- High - 3200x1800 (same resolution as the PlayStation 4 Pro uses)
- Ultra - 3840x2160 (4K)
- Apply the changes and restart the game to allow the change to take effect.
|
- The game have no built-in way to configure anisotropic filtering.
Force anisotropic filtering using Special K[6]
|
- Install the latest version of Special K for the game.
- While running the game, press Ctrl+⇧ Shift+← Backspace to bring up the Special K control panel.
- Expand the Ys VIII Lacrimosa of Dana section and the subsection called Texture Management.
- Enable Anisotropic filtering and set Maximum Anisotropy to a desired value.
- Restart the game to allow the changes to take effect.
Notes
- Modern GPUs can do 4x anisotropic filtering without any performance penalties.
|
Mipmaps
- Many textures included with the game lacks mipmaps; causing textures to shimmer when in motion.
Generate mipmaps for textures using Special K[6]
|
- Install the latest version of Special K for the game.
- While running the game, press Ctrl+⇧ Shift+← Backspace to bring up the Special K control panel.
- Expand the Ys VIII Lacrimosa of Dana section and the subsection called Texture Management.
- Enable Generate Mipmaps and set Texture Streaming Priority to a desired value (or just use the default Balanced).
- Enable Cache mipmaps to Disk if you want to prevent mipmaps from being generated anew on each launch. Note that this will require approximately 5-10 GB more disk space.
- Restart the game to allow the changes to take effect.
Notes
- Performance cost is negligible, although loading times might be slightly longer.
|
Shadows
- The game uses a locked shadow resolution of 4096x4096 by default. This can be increased using Special K.
- Shadow resolution can not be decreased.
Increase shadow resolution using Special K[6]
|
- Install the latest version of Special K for the game.
- While running the game, press Ctrl+⇧ Shift+← Backspace to bring up the Special K control panel.
- Expand the Ys VIII Lacrimosa of Dana section and the subsection called Shadows.
- Change Shadow Resolution according to the below list:
- Normal - 4096x4096 (game default)
- High - 8192x8192
- Very High - 12288x12288
- Ultra - 16384x16384 (only recommended for high-end machines)
- Apply the changes and restart the game to allow the change to take effect.

Anti Aliasing
- The game has an "anti aliasing" setting, and in the description it's called "FXAA", but it really isn't.
Additional Details
Here are 3 crops, all from a 1080p frame: In-game AA disabled; In-game AA enabled; Applying FXAA externally.
That's all standard geometry aliasing and has nothing to do with textures, and is something that any decent implementation of FXAA will take care of (as illustrated in the third shot). The game clearly does not actually implement FXAA, just some kind of blur filter.
