Introduction
Created by BioWare, published by Black Isle Studios, and released in 2000, Baldur's Gate 2: Shadows of Amn (BG2 or SoA) remains one of the most popular classic Dungeons and Dragons games. Set in the Forgotten Realms and using the Advanced Dungeons and Dragons ruleset, the player takes on the role of a Bhaalspawn, a child of the god of murder, and must unravel the plans of the antagonist Jon Irenicus. In 2001, the Throne of Bhaal (ToB) expansion pack was released extending the level cap of all classes and allowing the protagonist to fulfill his/her destiny: ascending as the new God of Murder.
Baldur's Gate 2 supports multiplayer campaigns over LAN or internet, though the Game Ranger free program allows one to find others playing online.
It is easiest to install and run Baldur's Gate 2 on a Windows operating system, but it is possible to play Baldur's Gate 2 with a Linux OS using Wine.
System Requirements
Where To Buy
Baldur's Gate 2 was released in the early days of CDs keys but, fortunately, did not use them. As such, one may purchase the disks used to install the game with no problems. There are, however, other options.
- Good Old Games offers a digital copy of Baldur's Gate 2 Complete which includes the base game and the Throne of Bhaal expansion pack.
- Amazon offers new copies of both Baldur's Gate 2: SoA and Baldur's Gate 2: The Collection, the latter includes the expansion pack.
- Additionally, the game has been bundled with other Dungeons and Dragons games from Black Isle Studios and can be found in many compilations.
Good Old Games Installation Guide
The digital copy sold by GOG can be installed with any current operating system. Windows 7 is supported by the .exe file from GOG but it is possible to install to a Unix-like operating system using Wine. This will be the focus of this guide.
Windows
For Windows XP and beyond, installation should be as simple as running the .exe file downloaded from GOG. If you plan to install Baldur's Gate 1 and use the BG1Tutu mod you should have no problems doing so.
Linux and Wine
Requirements
- setup_baldurs_gate_2.exe file from GOG.com
- Wine 1.3
Installation
- Run from terminal: wine ~/Downloads/setup_baldurs_gate_2.exe
- Follow on screen prompt
The path can be customized during installation but the default will be: ~/.wine/drive_c/Program Files/GOG.com/Baldurs Gate II
Running
To play the game use the shortcut created in the application menu under Wine. Running in terminal can give the error "err:ole:CoInitializeEx Attempt to change threading model of this apartment from multi-threaded to apartment threaded"
