Key points

Game does not run on modern operating systems (16-bit game). Virtualization is required.
Game runs exclusively at 256-color mode (8-bit), and cannot run at higher color settings. Windows Compatibility Mode does not work to resolve this (See Issues fixed for workaround.)

Issues fixed

256-color mode required

The game runs only at 256-color mode and refuses to launch at higher color settings. Windows Compatibility Mode does not work properly with this game.
Set to 256 colors[citation needed]
Method done with Windows XP running in a virtual machine (Windows XP Mode).
  1. Open the Display Properties.
  2. Go to the Settings tab and open the Advanced settings window.
  3. From the Advanced settings, go to the Adapter tab and click on "List All Modes...".
  4. From the list of valid modes, select any option that says "256 Colors" and click OK.
  5. Click OK or Apply for the changes to take effect.
  6. Close Display Properties and run the game as normal.
